NEXT RIDE

With the AGM in Hobart on Saturday, 6 August we are offering a ride on the Huon River on Sunday7 August, while being mindful of having our northern travellers on the road around lunchtime. Please let us know if you are interested and we will make the plans.

Subject to numbers, we are aiming for 9.30 departure from Huonville and will be back to the ramparound lunchtime. Anyone interested can add in a counter meal in the area before heading home.

Ride Review of Swansea to Wineglass Bay and Ile de PhoquesBy Gary Cannan (photos by Natalya Hinds and Andrew Johnston)

This excursion for most of us started on Friday afternoon with a trip along the scenic East Coast toour overnighter at Swansea Cabin Park. This was a good choice as most club members had theopportunity to enjoy a splendid meal at the Bark Mill with drinks to follow.

Saturday morning was brisk but fine with a clear blue sky and little wind. With these conditions allset out for the Swansea Boat ramp. Recent rough water proved to be a handicap for all but 4 wheeldrive vehicles as sand was extensively built up on the concrete ramp.

Briefing behind us, all hopped on to the skis except for those couple of skis that didn’t want toparticipate and wanted to leave on their own time. All 12 skis ventured around the beach line inGreat Oyster Bay enroute to Coles Bay; the ride was a delight and quickly reminded me how utterlydelightful it was to ride a ski on tranquil blue water with good friends and not a care in the world.

First short stop was at Coles Bay to take in the majestic sights of the Hazards from the water. Nextstint followed the coast line around Great Oyster Bay and Promise Bay to Schouten Passage wherecalm water greeted us but with a greatamount of weed to foul several jetunits (mine included). Luckily a big revin sport mode showed the weed wasno match for the Sea Doo.

Venturing up the coast to Thouin Bayand into Wineglass Bay was somewhat

hampered by weed picked up under several skis. Great interest was taken by myself as this was thefirst time in to Wineglass by boat for me .The beach at Wineglass proved to be both work shop anda diner. Finally, we headed up the coast towards Blue Stone Bay to observe the magnificent rockformations.

The journey south started: the swell picked upand marine life in the form of dolphins were intow to The Passage, which was still calm.Through the Passage and past Schouten Islandwith the wave action now considerable enrouteto White Rock (or that French name if you canspell it).

The swell now was such that losing sight offriends was frequent and a chill factor thatonly made rings on fingers large. At thispoint the trip back to Swansea was a focalpoint.

With all safely back at the boat ramp and awarm shower beckoning, we all departed toreassemble at The Bark Mill to only betterthe previous meal.

A great weekend with great friends and even a bit of character building.

Many thanksGary Cannan

End of year care for your skiBy Reg Turner

The following general information is provided to ‘winterise’ your ski if you are planning a break inskiing until the start of the warmer weather. You may need to adjust it for you ski type. If you haveany questions, talk to your local dealer. Products mentioned are available from Mayne’s Marine oryour local dealer.

PWC Winterization

Wash your engine compartment and outer hull. Make sure to get ALL the water out of thehull. Any water left inside the engine compartment will cause condensation and corrosion ofyour engine.

If you ride in salt water, treat with Salt-Away. Any residual water may freeze and causethings to crack including engines. Raise the front of the ski as high as you can get it fordrainage.

Add a Fuel Stabilizer to your watercraft's fuel tank. Fog the engine with marine grade engine fogging oil. Start the engine and spray the fogging

oil into the intake. Running the engine at this point will also circulate the stabilized fuel intothe fuel system. Fog for 20-30 seconds and shut the engine down.

Raise the reverse gate or bucket and inspect the wear ring and prop, spray some lubricantinto the prop area as well as the steering joints cables and moving parts.

Now is a good time to check your pump by removing the three screws and the pump cone.It is better to do when winterizing rather than in the spring. If any water has entered thepump oil you don’t want it sitting in there all winter and ruining your pump bearings. Mostpumps run grease or equivalent synthetic gear lube.

If the temperature drops below freezing in your area, add 50/50 water-antifreeze mix to thecooling system. Disconnect the water in-line from the cylinder head. Connect a hose with afunnel on the other end. Pour in antifreeze until it comes out the outlet of the coolingsystem. Make sure the antifreeze you use is aluminum safe.

Lubricate all of your cables and your steering system with spray lube. Spray down your engine with spray lube. A light coating is all you need to protect it from

corrosion. Top up battery and charge if necessary. When done, take a terminal off the battery as

EMMs will pull amps out even in standby when not in use. The trailer should not be overlooked neither: check wheel bearings, lube the winch and

hitch. And because some of you won’t use it till summer, raise the trailer up on some standsand take the weight off the tires. Makes them last much longer.

Make any notes of problems that should be addressed before you go riding next spring.

It’s also a good opportunity to check the hull and decks for scratches and gouges, and the conditionof the gelco underneath. Small patches are easy to do at home with the right products and willprotect your hull for your next season of riding.

Editor’s Note: This time of year is usually quieter at your dealer so if you are coming up to aservice, book in now and avoid the rush!

First Aid Course

As posted on our FB page recently, St John Ambulance is running its one-day “Red HotDay” first aid course on Saturday 18 June. Courses are one full day (instead of theusual two days) with 2-4 hours pre-course work to help with tests on the day.

Courses are being run in Devonport, Launceston and Moonah from9.00am – 4.30pm.

Given the distances we travel, the conditions we encounter and the numbers of us,whether as part of a Club event or an impromptu ride, current first aid knowledge will

likely come in handy for some of us one day. Of course, emergency events can occur at home, atwork, at the kids’ sporting events, out shopping or in a host of other scenarios. If you like to beprepared, this course could be right for you.

Call St John Ambulance on 1300 360 455 to book your spot. $99.00 fee can be paid over the phone.

Annual Dinner and AGM

We invite all members and partners and sponsors to join us at the Black Buffalo Hotel in NorthHobart on Saturday 6 August 2016 for our Annual Dinner and AGM. The AGM will be held at5.30pm, followed by pre-dinner drinks and the dinner at 7.30pm.

The AGM details are in a separate article in this newsletter.

The Annual Dinner is our major off-water event. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with fellowmembers, new and old, after the end of the main Club season. There will be a range of awardspresented on the night as well as some surprise giveaways. Of course, there’s always the annualYear in Review video compilation to look forward to.

Please inbox Ian Macleod (or any of the Committee) for details of the Dropbox if you have videofootage to add to the Year in Review. It really will be the more the merrier…. We need yourfootage by mid-July at the latest.

This year we are also looking for some spectacular still shots, with a great prize for the best photo.

The Raffle, raising for funds for Ride for Pippa, will also be drawn at the Dinner. Please return yourraffle books to us as soon as possible.

We encourage everyone to attend for a fun night. Cost of the dinner has been kept at the sameprice as the last few years: $50 per person. Please RSVP via the Facebook Event Page. AGM 2015-16

The AGM is our formal wrap up for the year. There’s nothing to do but turn up to this one!

There are no proposed changes to the Constitution or membership subscriptions this year, so themeeting will cover only the required matters and allow members the opportunity to ask questionsof the outgoing Committee. We expect the AGM to be finished in less than an hour.

We will also release the 2016-17 Club Calendar at the AGM.

As we are required to do, we will send you a formal notice of the meeting closer to the time. In themeantime, if you are interested in joining the Committee, a Nomination Form is attached to thisNewsletter. All positions are listed on the Nomination Form and all are open for election. Pleasecomplete one form for each position you wish to nominate for and email or mail it back to us by16 July. Email to [email protected] or mail to P O Box 350 Lenah Valley TAS 7008.

As always, it would be great to see some fresh ideas and faces on the Committee.

Please note: If there is only one nomination for any position, a vote is not required at the AGM forthat position. If more than one person nominates for the same position, a vote will be held at theAGM. If no nominations for a position are received, anyone attending the AGM can nominatethemselves on the night, however if you are keen to assist the Club, you run the risk of missing outif you leave it till the night of the AGM to nominate.

Sponsorship Renewals 2016-17

The Club has really appreciated the support of our sponsors this year and we hope that eachsponsor will take up the invitation to renew. Sponsorship forms for 2016-17 and invoices will bemailed to this year’s sponsors very soon.

Again, the Committee has kept the sponsorship subscription to $200, as it has been for the last fewyears. This includes the equivalent of a family membership or two nominated individual membersfor sponsors who intend to ride on Club events.

We are also keen to involve our sponsors in more opportunities to promote themselves to Clubmembers. New sponsors are also very welcome. A Sponsorship form for 2016-17 is attached tothis newsletter.

Change to Ride Rules for 2016-17

Both the Club Membership Form and the Code of Conduct expect skis to be insured. At the SpecialGeneral Meeting held in November 2015, members present discussed the financial risk (to theClub, Club members, passengers or others) that can arise from uninsured skis. The Committee hasrecently decided that every ski attending a ride in 2016-17 MUST BE INSURED FOR AT LEAST THIRDPARTY LIABILITY AND PROPERTY DAMAGE.

While it would be a very difficult decision, the Committee has agreed that uninsured skis will not bepermitted to join a Club ride from the 1 July 2016.

Insurance is required to protect other people, skis or property from any damage that may becaused by your ski, regardless of the cause or intention. Liability claims for personal injury can bevery expensive. Courts have been known to award damages that extend to hundreds of thousands,or even millions of dollars, when another person is permanently injured and is unable to work.

While the Committee appreciates that some ski owners consider they can afford such payouts ordon’t think their ski is worth insuring, the Club is not in a position to cover such insurance itself.Neither is it fair or equitable on those who pay their membership subscription and their owninsurance premium to subsidise ski owners who choose not to insure.

While the Club is not qualified to, or intending to, provide insurance advice, the following generalinformation is provided to members. Third Party Liability and Property Damage insurance can beavailable from around $250 p.a - approximately the equivalent of two or three tanks of fuel eachyear. With our membership subscriptions so low, the Committee considers that this is a reasonableexpectation of each ski owner each year.

Mayne’s Marine has kindly offered to assist any ski owner, from anywhere in the State, to organisethe minimal insurance policy required. Please contact them on 6214 9999 to arrange this. AnEXAMPLE of a quote is provided below. NOTE: This sample premium could be reduced further byremoving the Magazine Fee and then, courtesy of Mayne’s Marine, applying the 10% discountoffered to TJSBC Club members. Paying by the month would increase premium slightly (+7%).

If you wish to join a formal Club ride, please organise your insurance and provide details to theClub. Committee members do not want to be in the position of turning anyone away from a Clubride, particularly if that person has driven for hours to get to the boat ramp, but our members havedecided that this is what needs to happen.

Figure 1 In this example, could reduce premium to $230 p.a. by removing magazine fee & applying Mayne's discount forTJSBC members. Monthly premium including service fee would be $20.50 per month. Policy outcome achieved byarranging a minimal value on the insured ski – $1000 in this example.

Weather events

The horrendous weather conditions have caused a lot of destruction in many parts of our State aswe have seen on the news, in the newspapers, through social media, or in some cases, looking outthe window.

If any of our members need assistance to store skis and equipment, please post on our FaceBookpage or contact any of the Committee directly. We know that our Club members are willing tohelp as soon as they are asked to.

If you are planning rides over the next few weeks, please consider that waterways in affected areasand downstream will continue to carry excess water and extreme amounts of debris for some timeto come. These may come downstrem in surges rather than predictably. The surrounds of usualwaterways may have changed, meaning newly-created banks of rivers and lakes are likely to havehidden obstacles and submerged objects that can create a lot of damage to a ski and potentially, riders and passengers.

The health of the flowing water is likely to be extremely poor, with water borne bacteria resultingfrom decaying animals and sewage oversflow in some areas, together with the unusually fast pacedwater flows.

Please think carefully about where you intend to ride, how safe and healthy it is likely to be and therisk of you needing to call for assistance if anything happens. Our emergency services don’t needanother rescue when their services are being stretched helping people whose homes andlivelihoods are almost destroyed.
