This year I am again privileged to be elected as your President, a position that I have held over the past two decadeswith intervals in which recent graduates of the House have taken the helm. Dam Concagh has also been re-elected toher post of Database Secretary and Newsletter Editor. We have been quite a consistent core of the HERAA Board forabout half a decade. Dare's contribution to the membership is extensive enough, but this year again she is co-treasurerwith me. This arrangement is working well; she deposits our dues and contributions, I pay the bills and get bankstatements! The other Alumnae Board members this year are Jill Passano, an active Vice President and Luba Zhaurova, our conscientious Recording Secretary. Both are welcome additions, with their energetic and enthusiastic participationin our meetings! From the House, we have for the second year the House Director, Sarah Williams, always informativeand supportive of House residents and a fine liaision to HERAA, and two Students, House President Juliana Chan andMary Pike, HER Vice-President. Board meetings are a pleasure, with all of the group actively engaged with settinggoals and priorities.

Coming events: The Annual Tea will be on April 1,2006, a Saturday, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. You will be receivingyour invitation early enough to make travel arrangements. We hope that you will be able come and enjoy both theformal meeting and the talents of students who present music, dance, and readings. Also, we encourage alums to bringtheir artistic and literary productions to share. We hope those of you who live nearby will consider joining the Board.

A primary goal this year is to increase the active membership of HERAA. Although everyone we know of receivesa Newsletter, we do not hear from all of you. I would like to encourage everyone to be actively involved by writing ore-mailing us about what is going on in your life as you respond to the dues/contribution part of this Newsletter. Yourdues of $25 a year help with Newsletter expenses. Others who have lived at HER but do not hear from us should send anote to Dara Concagh, clo HERAA at 191 Bay State Road with your current address, e-mail, and/or phone number, and your news.

We want you to know how much the House appreciates all that you have contributed to keep the furnishings lookinggood. Our goals now are 1) to replace the dining room drapes (now more than 10 years old), 2) buy new sofas for thefoyer, and 3) develop a corner of the foyer as a study nook with table and chairs. We bought a small buffet for thefoyer last spring. 4) We are looking into the possibility of new French doors between the dining room and Foyerbecause the pocket doors do not open and close properly. 5) We are waiting to see what the House wants for its annualHoliday gift. 6) The frescoes in the foyer still need evaluation. You have already heard that there is a new kitcheninstalled by BU that cost about $40,000 and was paid for out of the Endowment Fund that BU controls but was alsosubsidized by BU.

{continuedfrom page 1)What about the budget? This year we received a

bequest of$10,000 that went through the Alumnae givingoffice to the HER Endowment Fund. We thank the donor(as yet unknown to us). While the executive board of theHouse has input into how this money is used, the HERAAhas no say in how it will be spent. Several years ago,HERAA was incorporated as an independent tax-freeorganization so that we could receive contributions andhave, in conjunction with HER, direct knowledge of howthe funds were spent; thus, we encourage considerationthat potential bequests go to HERAA. On the other hand,we realize that BU has an annuity program ($10,000 ormore) in which the contributor receives a percentage of themoney back each year. HERAA does not have thisarrangement, but it is possible for bequests to be sent toBU for the HER Endowment Fund. Please be aware thatthe House and the HERAA Board are very grateful tothose (to borrow a term from the Red Sox) in our "HERNation" who pay dues and make contributions. We keepbequests and large donations in a special fund forperpetuity: This means the interest that accrues can bespent on special proj ects for the House while the principleis kept intact.

Our current funds for refurbishing and annual expensesare $6,000 accumulated over the past two years frominterest on a former bequest and from your contributionsand dues. Annual expenses run about $2,000-$2200including awards to students, gift to House, support fundsfor the Tea, the website, and xeroxing and mailing theNewsletter. The remainder is for current house renewal.

On behalf of the Board, may I wish you a HappyHoliday season, good health, and happiness, even in thisday of coping with high gasoline prices, many tragicnatural disasters, and the ongoing war in Iraq. Let's beresilient and hope for the best.

    My best regards,Marjorie E. Kettell, Ph.D. President and Co-Treasurer

Greetings from the HER House! We hope you've had a wonderful year. fiward Winners2005

    Dear Alumnae and Friends,

191 Bay State Road continues to be a wonderful place to live. The kitchenrenovations of summer 2003 were a great aesthetic improvement to the house, and '" Ruth Manwaring grants wereresidents have continued this work throughout the building. As a holiday gift to the given to Lauren Whitleigh andhouse last December, several house members remodeled the Alumnae Room, transforming the formerly cave-like space with new bookshelves, robin's-egg bluepaint, and decorations. Several House women have also painted their bedrooms, helping to make the house a home. The Alumnae board recentl y approved arecurring grant, proposed by House member Emily Torgrimson, which will providesemesterly funds of$50 for small, permanent improvements to the HER House.

Mary Pike worth $230 each. Inorder to receive these grants, thewomen write letters to theHERAA Board, and they arereviewed on the basis of meri t,need, and explanation of howfunds would be used.In addition to beautifying the House, we've also made substantial progress in

environmental responsibility since the last newsletter. After months ofnegotiations, the House started full recycling services in the late spring. Acompo sting program began in September. We have faucet aerators andenergy-efficient lightbulbs and are working with the University to insulate theHouse to help reduce our fuel usage (and expenses).

'"Miss Cooperative ($100),which is voted on by thewomen of the House, was alsogiven to Montana Donnell.'" The Emma Sleeper Award

Meanwhile, House members keep busy with classes, jobs, internships, ($100) in memory of a housecommunity service, artistic and athletic endeavors, and finding the next group of mother in the 1920's was givenHER women. lultana In Par t s Board of DirectorsIhad the best experience studying abroad in Paris this summer. As cliched as itmay sound, this really was a "once in a lifetime" experience. In my two monthsin the City of Light, I lived with a host family, interned at a well-knowncorporate law firm, and took one French class about French plays, poems, andmovies. The best part of the nights in Paris was how the sun did not set until10pm, making it ideal to have picnics with friends. We would go to the localMonoprix, pick up some wine, cheese, and baguette, and head over to the parkto watch the Eiffe1 Tower sparkle every hour. In my short time in Paris, I triedto make the city my own: wandering around with only a map in my bag, goingto museums, reading in the park, and going to mass at Notre Dame everySunday.
