Dear Parents and Caregivers Restorative Justice Training for Staff: Last Friday the staff had a follow-up professional development day to further develop the Restorative Practices in the College. While the focus was centred on relations between teachers and students, the whole staff – teaching and support – were together for part of the day. The essence of this approach is to address the relationship when some harm has occurred. It is a good way of holding people accountable for their actions and establishing what needs to be done to address the harm. All permanent teachers who are new to the school attend intensive training in the programme. This week five teachers attended the three day course. The fact that there is such importance given to on-going development is a sign of the Board’s commitment to this approach. We are in our third year of the RJ programme at the College and it is interesting that students in Years 7 – 9 especially are most familiar with the language and format of Restorative Practice. During this time there have been very few students who have been stood-down and there has not been a single student who has been suspended. While there is no doubt an element of good luck there is also no doubt that this approach to discipline is working. While I realise that you had to make arrangements to look after your son for the Teacher-Only day last Friday, I do thank you for your understanding and support to enable us to proceed with the day. Parent Teacher Evenings: By now you will have received your son’s report. Please refer to the information included in this newsletter which explains how to book a time to meet with your son’s teachers on either Tuesday 9th or Wednesday 10th next week. I look forward to meeting you there. Jubilee Committee: Preparations for next year’s 40th Jubilee are underway. The organising committee has met and planning is gathering momentum. More information will be available on the College website. I will inform you when it has been added. The celebrations will take place on Labour Weekend 2014. Old Boys Association: The Old Boys Association is now formally back in business. After several meetings and a lot of communication, a committee has now been established and several events are being planned to bring past students together. More information will be available on the College website. Holiday Tutoring Programme: A number of teachers of NCEA are offering tutoring opportunities during the term break. This is one of the reasons for our continuing outstanding NCEA results. I would ask you to encourage your son to take advantage of this opportunity to assist with his learning and achievement. I thank my staff who are prepared to give their time so willingly. If you are travelling during the break I wish you safe travel and return.
God bless you and your families.

It’s All In The Mind
One day the Buddha, badly overweight, was sitting under a tree. A young soilder, trim and handsome, came along, looked at the Buddha, and said: “You look like a pig!”
The Buddha replied, “Well you look like God!”
“Why would you say that?” replied the rather surprised young soldier.
“Well,” replied the Buddha, “we see what’s inside us. I think about God all day and when I look out, that is what I see. You, obviously, must think about other things”.
Yes, how much of what we see outside ourselves is coloured by what is going on inside us. If we are happy within, we look at the world—and people in particular—positively.
If we are unhappy, self-centred, living a life that we know we need to change, or whatever, then that is going to colour how we view people and how we view life. Who
are you like—the Buddha or the young soldier? Blessings for today

Quiz Night Stretches Liston College Minds
The Henderson RSA was filled with Liston College family and friends last Friday night for a Quiz Night hosted by the Liston PTFA. The competition was rife between the 11 teams especially with names such as the Liston Warriors and Team All Stars. Our very own Liston College parent Trevor Dwyer did an amazing job as quiz master, dishing out the questions and keeping us all entertained with his great sense of humour. We received fantastic feedback from participants and the Henderson RSA provided a great atmosphere and venue. Many thanks to our major sponsor McIntosh Dental for your wonderful support, the Liston PTFA members for making it all happen, not to mention the prefects who came to help out on the night. Thanks also for the donated prizes from Auto Lab, Positive Negatives Photography, Exude Beauty and Henderson RSA.
So which team won? In third place was ‘The Valley’ and despite being the smallest team on the night, they were the first to guess the ‘quizzler’ determined by some very hard clues. Coming in at a close second was Mr Rooney’s group ‘Team All Stars’, well done team! But there was one clear winner on the night and that was team ‘Hazelminds’ who scored highly in ALL 6 rounds-fantastic effort and congratulations!
Many thanks to all those that attended quiz night. We had a great evening and through your generous support we were able to raise valuable funds for the College.
PTFA UPDATES

SCHOOL FEES
To those families who are all up to date: Thank you for your continuing diligence in paying school fees. Your fees are literally operating the school!
You will be receiving your son’s latest statement update in the next week, (but not if there is a nil balance or credit). Don’t forget these statements only show what is left outstanding, not the payments made. Please contact us if you don’t receive one as expected – there have been mail problems in the past.
There should be no subject fees, Diary or ID card fees left outstanding as these were due in term one. Please take care of them now if this is not the case.
Automatic Payments:
The important thing to remember is that you divide the present balance by the number of weeks left in the year to see if your current payments will cover the fees.
NCEA Fees:
All those with unpaid NCEA fees received an updated reminder over the last two weeks. Please pay these promptly to avoid it being sent to NZQA and late penalty fee added. Your son will need this fee paid just to access any credits achieved, whether or not he sits exams at the end of the year.
Sports Fees:
If your son is involved in a sport, you should have been notified of the fee after the first official practice and an invoice sent home following. It is important that you pay these immediately as this is what the sporting department relies on to pay for all entry costs, uniforms etc. All payments should be paid to the school office so that a receipt may be given.
DON’T GET BEHIND IN FEE PAYMENTS – it only makes things worse long term. Even a little amount by automatic payment each week makes a difference and gives you a good payment history with us should you need assistance in the future.
As always, if you are not going to be able to keep up with school fee payments for any reason, please contact Philippa straight away for us to be able to make arrangements this end.
Contact details: Philippa Muller (School fees only) Ph: 839 2297
Email: [email protected]
NB: If you wish to pay by automatic payment installment or direct credit, please note the bank details following. Liston College Bank details: ASB Henderson Branch 12 3039 0320830 00 Please quote student's name on all bank transactions, thank you.
REMINDER!
The Liston College Board of Trustees has agreed to offer a special incentive for those who pay full fees by the end of October. All families who qualify will go into the draw for three prizes of Pak’N’Save Vouchers – very handy when coming up to Christmas time! We suggest you try to schedule your payments so the last one is made by 31/10/13 (and please note this must include ALL fees).
