Issue 3 Term 1 – Week 7 11 March 2016

I would like to congratulate all those students who have participated in events over the past fortnight. Many individuals and teams have won or achieved personal best results and many have participated proudly to the best of their ability. Both are equally important and I encourage all students to get involved in the things that interest them and be a part of a team or a group.

Thank you to the staff and the parents who have supported and helped enable these things to happen. We want to ensure a range of opportunities are made available to all students at Kincumber High School.

Congratulations to Connor O’Heir for his award from Central Coast Student Voice for his speech, presented last year in November for Remembrance Day at The Entrance. Connor‘s speech was memorable and written intelligently and with compassion. We are proud of his achievement.

I attended part of the Zone swimming carnival last week and was impressed with many of the excellent performances of our swimmers and their sportsmanship on the day. The results will be included in the sport report. Sixteen students will proceed to the Sydney North round. A number of other students, as individuals and team members, have done well in sporting events in recent times. Please read about some of these in the sport report. Congratulations to all these students.

We welcomed many local families to our Stage 3 night last week and had a fantastic number of people turn up to hear a little about the transition to Kincumber High School and then go on a tour of the school. Big thank you to the staff, school leaders and the Ag students who helped with this night. Special thanks to Zoe Boxsell and Connor O’Heir for presenting a students perspective on the school. The Ag farm and animals were a big hit. We welcome families in our zone to contact the school if you have enquiries regarding enrolments for 2017.

I would like to remind parents and students that Work Health and Safety laws (WHS) outweigh thoughts about fashion and what your child would prefer to wear on their feet.

The Kincumber High school uniform requires students to wear fully enclosed leather shoes that are black in colour.

A number of subject areas are deemed, by the WHS Directorate, as practical areas and areas that require 100% wearing of black leather shoes with good soles, due to the nature of activities in these areas. These include Science, Technology and Applied Studies (TAS - food, wood, metal, textiles), and for some activities, Visual Arts. Teachers are directed not to enable students to enter rooms when they do not have appropriate footwear for the activity. They are to be given written work to do at this time and are not able to participate in the practical activity. This is problematic as the student is unable to complete the required work due to not having safe shoes. This may result in a ‘0’ mark as the syllabus requires certain things to be included as mandatory components. To avoid this situation it is our recommendation that you ensue you purchase the correct shoes for a school environment and these practical activities. All schools MUST comply with these rules.

The images represent correct and incorrect shoes. Other full leather boots or Doc Martins are also appropriate.

If you are unsure please check with the school.

English Report

In English this week, all years, from 7 to 11 Preliminary Extension, have had fun combining creative and critical thinking. We wrote ‘Six Word Sad Stories’, ‘Ten Word Stories of Celebration’, and poems in rhyming couplets that start ‘Love is …’ and ‘Hate is…’. Here are some amazing examples of their work.

Six Word Sad Stories

“I miss the old me – Earth.” Jake Lidster

‘But everything has a final page.’

‘Fraying flowers, black like her dress.’

Ten Word Stories of Celebration

‘She became the flower she was always meant to be.’ Abbey Fletcher

‘Blowing out my candles, I could feel my heart smile.’

‘The dress gleamed as the bells chimed, signalling their unity.’

Love is …

‘Love is the ocean, crashing upon cliffs,

Churning and marking the shore with its kiss.” Libby Ingels

Love is the way we see ourselves. Love can

Destroy or bind. Love is nobody’s man.’

Hate is …

‘Hate is the opposite of affection

And is what drives humanity to thrive.

Hate is exclusion and cuts connection

And is disliked, causing you to thrive.” Brendan Townsend

‘Hate gazes upon those dark and broken.

Closing gates, windows, minds. Shattering hopes.

Shouting words that should remain unspoken,

Malicious and dark, brooding tokens.” Melouise Tucker

We are now beginning a writing competition called ‘100 Word Stories. The only criteria is that it has to be exactly 100 words, and of course, engaging. There will be prizes for the winners, so talk to your English teachers if you want to be involved. We would absolutely love to have your input.

Agriculture and Primary Industries Report

This has been a very busy start to the school year. This article should bring you up to date about what has been happening on the farm, in the classroom, and in the show ring.

The arrival of 20 young goats has seen many students test their animal training skills. Year 7 students now have them well trained and understand the goats’ different personalities. Year 9 and 10 Agriculture classes have tagged, drenched and vaccinated the goats ensuring they stay healthy.

The meat chickens are only 10 days from heading off to the Royal Easter Show. Year 7 students have spent a lot of time weighing, and recording their results, as part of a schools competition. All are a little shocked at how fast the cute little chickens grow.

The Poultry Show Club is extremely busy getting the Silver Pencil Wyandottes ready for the show. KHS will be sending 21 birds to the show and expect many ribbons. Twenty keen students will be travelling to Sydney on the school bus ensuring the birds are presented to the show in perfect condition. KHS has become well known through showing and have recently sold birds in Queensland, Victoria, and in many areas of NSW. Our breeding program for 2016 will commence right after the birds arrive back from the Royal Easter Show.

Two weeks ago saw the arrival of Carlos, a 260kg Square Meater steer. The farmer was impressed to learn we were intending to take it to the Newcastle Show the following week. The Cattle Show Team worked very hard on Wednesday and Friday afternoons after school to successfully parade it at the Newcastle Show. Carlos has turned out to be a big pussy cat. We now have Briion, and 470kg steer, Carlos, and Haloumi, our Red Poll cow, who has just given birth to Kincumber Jaffa, a new baby boy. Mum and baby are doing well and only suffering from all the kindness of the students.

Issue 3 Term 1 – Week 7 11 March 2016

The rabbits have had a litter with 3 small rabbits. Everyone is excited and can’t wait to care for the young ones.

To ensure the sheep and goats are free of stomach worms, the Year 10 Agriculture class performed a worm test. The faecal samples were sent to the lab and we are awaiting the results. They will tell us if we need to drench, and with which chemical. It is important for the students to understand in Agriculture that we often do the same job as a veterinary surgeon, a livestock officer and a trained farm worker, all at the same time. Last week we performed a Pesty Virus Check on the cattle. There is a lot of science in Agriculture.

Last Friday, 20 KHS students competed at the Newcastle Show. While we didn’t win the overall trophy this year, everyone represented the school in a very professional manner. The quality of the parading is improving, as is the students’ confidence to present speeches explaining why they judged the steers the way they did. The steers, and the students arrived home very late on Friday evening, confident that they can win at the next cattle show, the Bellingen River Show in the first week of next term.

Year 7 Camp

In Week 3 of this term, Year 7 went to The Great Aussie Bush Camp! We started our journey early in the morning, marking rolls and packing the buses. As the bus drove away from the school, it was obvious that both students and staff were brimming with excitement. After a long bus trip, we arrived at the camp. Students were allocated their accommodation, introduced to their Camp Instructors and prepared for the day’s activities.

Some groups were lucky enough to start their day sailing and sea kayaking along the beautiful Jimmy’s Beach, while others took on the giant swing. Even though the 15 metre swing looked terrifying, most of us faced our fears and gave it a go. Some student screams could be heard several kilometres away. The rest of the day was jam packed with activities which kept us all busy and left many students feeling exhausted. But that didn’t stop us from competing in the late night Camp Quiz, with the girls clearly beating the boys in all categories.

Over the following two days, the groups rotated through a wide range of activities, including rock climbing, fencing, the vertical challenge, sea kayaking, sailing, high ropes and running the gauntlet at mud world. Our last night was also action packed, with students attending the camp disco where many students, and even a few teachers, displayed their dancing prowess.

Issue 3 Term 1 – Week 7 11 March 2016

The Great Aussie Bush Camp gave us many opportunities to set goals, test ourselves and get over our fears. I was disappointed when the day came that we had to pack up and leave. We said goodbye to the instructors and boarded the bus ready for a long journey home. All in all, we came out of that camp with new knowledge, new understanding and possibly new friends! Big thanks to The Great Aussie Bush Camp, our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders, and all the staff who made this wonderful excursion possible!

Mr Donaldson, Year 7 Adviser

Careers Report

A reminder that work experience is still a valuable opportunity for those who need to broaden their horizons and learn about the world of work.

When it comes to applying for full time work after school, especially with apprenticeships, there is no substitute for experience and knowledge of the job.

Year 10 is the ideal time to do work experience. Students need to have all official paperwork completed beforehand and Mr Fortey is happy to help with this.

It was great to see another 18 students complete their WH&S "Whitecard" training this week. These qualifications make a big difference when it comes time to impress employers.

Many Year 12 students have been completing their 'exit plan' interviews with me and it’s great to see them having a sense of purpose and direction for 2017-18.

I am still available and willing to help for those who have not made it yet. Parents are most welcome to join in.

Please contact me if you have any enquiries.

WHAT IS THE A.E.C.G.?

The Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (A.E.C.G.) is a community based voluntary organisation that has been operating from a grass roots level since the late 1970’s and is the peak advisory group for Aboriginal education in N.S.W. A.E.C.G. is an avenue for parents and community members to have a “voice”. It’s your chance as a parent, caregiver or student to have a say in what happens in your child’s education and be aware of what’s happening in your local school and community.

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

Membership is open to parents, Aunties, Uncles, caregivers and community members. Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal members are invited at a cost of $2 per year.

WHAT HAPPENS AT A MEETING/YARN-UP?

Results include wins to both our girls and boys volleyball teams, our open girls basketball team, and both our girls and boys tennis teams. Our Open Girls Water Polo Team made it through to the final of the Central Coast Carnival, narrowly going down by one goal.

Unfortunately, some of our other teams have also been knocked out of the competition, including our open girls and boys touch football teams and open boys basketball team. All coaches have been extremely pleased with everyone’s effort and sportsmanship throughout these games. Good luck to those teams remaining in the competition.

DANCE NEWS

An amazing Master Class Dance workshop! Congratulations to all dancers who participated in this fantastic opportunity. It was great to see you all tackle the complex Wicked choreography, taught by Ryan Sheppard and have so much fun. A huge thank you to Ryan for coming to teach these workshops and providing some really great insight into the musical theatre world and its opportunities.

Ryan in the role of Chistery in Wicked the musical

It is always good to be reminded that there are far more opportunities through being a dancer, than just dancing……dance management, dance publicist, dance physiotherapist, stage production, stage management, dance director, rehearsal coordinator/director, dance advertising and the list goes on.

This workshop was made possible due to GONSKI funding, which is allowing us to meet the varied needs of our students in a range of creative ways.

Central Coast Dance Festival auditions are fast approaching at the end of the term. It is important to keep working on creating your festival items and rehearsing them.

A reminder that dancers are encouraged to return their publicity consent forms ASAP please. Year 7 Dance Ensemble, please pay your $30.00 to the front office ASAP and return your permission note to Ms Dutton if you have not already done so.

Issue 3 Term 1 – Week 7 11 March 2016

DANCE DRAMA Students….Would you like to see an amazing Musical this Year????

Finally, a huge congratulations to each of the dancers who attended the NAISDA Dance Company auditions at Kariong. You were all fantastic representatives of Dance and Kincumber HS. I would like to go on to congratulate Emily Andrew, Samantha Dunn & Kaia Flett of Year 9 on their successful selection into this Regional dance company.
