They endured five days, including travelling to and from Wales in cramped mini buses, and four nights, some of which were in sub-zero temperatures and the wettest conditions for a very long time. Their expedition saw them walking 40 miles (more for some who took a wrong turn!) Thirteen took on their Qualifying and three took on their Practise expeditions involving camping in sodden fields, climbing up mountains and crossing rivers, navigating fields of new lambs and angry ewes and pushing themselves to their limits to overcome injuries, blisters and

hunger for fast food and chocolate, not to mention carrying everything they needed for their days out in the wild on their backs. Some of the girls’ bags looked bigger than them! They all showed impressive steely determination, extreme courage and a strength of character to continue when they really did not want to. As their Wild Country Assessor summed up the event on Sunday, “You all started this journey as young boys and girls from Collingwood and you have ended it as fine young men and women now ready to take on the world”. It was their never-ending sense of humour and comradery that really impressed us; they never gave up on each other and supported all their team mates to be true representatives of themselves, their families and Collingwood.

A very well done to them all from the DofE Team!

Mrs Goggin - DofE Co-ordinator

YEARS 9 AND 10 LANGUAGE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN EUROPEAN CHALLENGE

We had to make a call arranging a hotel booking, design and create a model of a trade stand, buy all the items we needed in Spanish or French. We had to write the pros and cons for each trade fair and select people from each group to attend seminars on how to market and finally present a radio advert and two presentations to a panel of judges. Then the best group was awarded a prize. Even if none of us won, it was still an amazing experience that allowed us to learn more vocabulary which allowed us to expand our knowledge on our chosen language. Personally, my favourite part was ordering the items to make our stand as it gave me experience in ordering in Spanish. Anna's favourite part was being sales manager, learning how to sell things in a positive light.

Everyone enjoyed this event. Megan Jones says: “Personally, I enjoyed being training manager as it taught me how to present an interesting and effective presentation. Also, it taught me how necessary it is to be able to relay messages accurately, improving communication with your team. The experience has encouraged me to develop my language further. I now definitely know I would like to be in a managerial position in my future career!” We would like to thank all the teachers in the MFL Department for organising this event.

The Seminar came to a close with the special awards which were presented by the Personal Tutors.

COLLINGWOOD’S DANCE GROUP ‘LIFT OFF’ IN COMPETITION

On Saturday 28 April, the Collingwood Dance Group travelled to the Wilde Theatre at South Hill Park in Bracknell to take part in the Lift Off Dance Competition. The Group had to enter through an application process before even getting through to the performing round at Lift Off. The girls were lucky to get through to the live Performance round. The girls endured a long and busy day full of rehearsals, tech runs, make-up/hair prep and keeping morale high and nerves to a minimum. Darcey McCrossan and Rosie Jones from Year 11 were a fantastic help, giving up their Saturday to help support and keep the girls in good spirits and helped with make-up, hair and rehearsal practice.

On the whole, the girls represented Collingwood impeccably and were complimented on their behaviour and courtesy and for being the biggest group there! The girls’ performance was incredible and completely took the audience by storm. Feedback from other competing groups consisted of high praise and compliments, with my favourite one being “I wish we had those costumes”.

The competition was to find one group out of forty to go forward to the U Dance Regional Final Festival in Suffolk, hopefully we will find out by the end of the week which group has been put forward. Finally, I just wanted to say how very proud I am to have taken the Collingwood dancers and would like to thank them all for being so committed and well-behaved. Another huge thank you goes to parents for allowing the girls to give up their Saturday and perform.

TRAIN TO TEACH AT COLLINGWOOD COLLEGE Have you ever considered becoming a teacher? If so, one of our courses could be for you. As a member of Collingwood College’s community, we are writing to you to let you know of the excellent training opportunities available to you with us and I can think of no better place to train than here or in one of our partner schools. Collingwood College is committed to ensuring that we have high quality teachers for all of our students and in order to fulfil this, we need to train and develop undergraduates. Whether you are in your final year of your degree course, or you have been working in industry for a number of years, you are eligible to apply for one of our teacher training courses. The teacher training bursaries have been announced and for some shortage courses, trainees could be eligible for up to £26,000 and £15,000 for English. We are really proud at Collingwood College to be the lead school in our own School Direct alliance which is a School and University based teacher training programme whereby trainees qualify within the school year with QTS and/or a PGCE. We work with the University of Reading and four other schools: Kings International School, The Winston Churchill School, The Magna Carta School and Bishop David Brown. The beauty of the School Direct course is that you are recruited by the school that you will be placed in and you can therefore have more ownership of your own training Programme.

All of our routes are unsalaried and we offer the following range across our schools:

Art and Design Biology Chemistry Physics Maths English Computing Geography Art and Design History Modern Foreign Languages PE.

We are also part of Teach Surrey, a partnership of Surrey based schools providing School Centered Initial Teacher Training accredited by the highly respected and well-established George Abbot SCITT. You could train here at Collingwood College, supported by an experienced Mentor on a training placement, within a wide range of subjects and all three key stages. We have an excellent success rate and hope that you might go on to be one of them. For further information please look on our website or email me directly on [email protected] to arrange a visit.

SEBASTIAN REACHES FINAL OF NATIONAL BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS

During the weekend of Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April, the top ranked boys and girls in England gathered to compete in the National Under 13 Badminton Championships in Birmingham. Sebastian Grove (7D) was hoping to repeat his success of two years ago when he became English Under 11 Boys Doubles National Champion. Sebastian, seeded No. 2, battled through group and knockout stages, held over two days, to reach the final of both the boys doubles and mixed doubles events. He fought hard but lost out in the finals - earning two fantastic silver medals. Congratulations Sebastian!!

EXAM CERTIFICATES Exam certificate postage payment is now available on ParentPay. Please ensure payment is made as soon as possible to ensure your child receives their exam certificates from the Summer 2018 season. This is of particular importance for those students in Years 11 and 13 who are leaving the College. To avoid certificates being lost in transit or left crumpled at the bottom of a school bag, we encourage payment to be made for Years 9 and 10 too. For those that make payment for postage, exam certificates are usually despatched in December using Royal Mail’s ‘Signed For’ service. Certificates will be required by future employers and further education institutes. If you don’t have your certificates when you need them in later life, the exam boards can provide a replacement statement of results but it is very costly.

SURVEY FOR FAMILIES WITH YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE AN EHCP

As part of Surrey County Council’s continual cycle of performance, improvement and evaluation we are taking part in the Personal Outcome Evaluation Tool (POET) survey, which looks at the impact EHCPs are having for our families. The POET survey has been developed by the charity ‘In Control’ and is supported by the

Department for Education. The results also indicate how Surrey County Council is working in

comparison with other local authorities.

The survey is totally anonymous, replies go direct to ‘In Control’. There are versions for parents, children and practitioners. The survey runs until the end of June. http://www.surreylocaloffer.org.uk/poet
