    Hello everyone,

I am writing this at the end of my annual leave and I am feeling a little sad that my holiday has ended. August is a good month just to slow down a little isn’t it but that’s not always easy to do. I preached a sermon last Sunday on waiting in the present moment and as I’d prepared that sermon I realised how difficult I find it to rest in the present and not keep looking ahead or looking back. I do like new beginnings and to a certain extent every day is a new beginning, “new every morning, great is thy faithfulness…”

So here it is, the beginning of a new term, a new season and for many it’s a time of new starts.

I passed a church the other day that had a poster outside which read, “Summer was God’s idea”, a season for light and joy and re-creation. I hope many of you have enjoyed those things this summer.

Seasons in themselves are God’s creation and gift to us – and we have seasons that we go through in our lives just as nature has seasons. I like the thought that God gives us seasons of life as it helps us live through the particular time we are in and just as seasons in nature change and move on so God does that in us as we navigate with Him our way

through life. Winter, a time where there doesn’t seem to be much growth and things seem hard – is a time when animals hibernate and are protected, seeds germinate in the dark places under the earth so that when Spring comes plants can grow and flourish and animals multiply. Each season has its purpose and is valuable to the earth but also to our soul and life.

I guess we all probably have our favourite season for all sorts of reasons.

As we start the new season at St Margaret’s we’re looking forward to our Pet Service this month (22nd 4.30 followed by BBQ), the Heather Clemence Memorial Concert which is always a wonderful occasion, ( a few tickets are still available – please speak to John Clemence), Harvest Festival at the beginning of Oct and many ways in which we will be seeking to be as involved in Village life as possible.

You are all always welcome to these events at Church.

Trusting in our God who made the seasons means that I can trust in whatever changes and situations the

future may bring. Hopefully St Margaret’s is a place where we celebrate and journey together with God through all our seasons of life

and everyone is welcome on that journey.

    Much love to you all,

    Serena x

    SUNDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER

    PET SERVICE 4.30pm

FOLLOWED BY FREE BAR B Q

PLEASE BRING OWN DRINKS (SOFT DRINKS PROVIDED)

All dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, ponies, chil-dren and WELL-BEHAVED grown-ups WELCOME!

    A NOTE FROM THE TREASURER

I think that some members of the congregation may not fully understand how Gift Aid works on church collections.

Provided that the annual collection total is below a certain limit, which it cer-tainly is at St Margaret’s then Gift Aid may be recovered on open cash. However there are two things which limit this.

    • No claim may be made on open cash if the congregation is under 10 which is often the case at 8am Communion.

    • Gift Aid may not be claimed on a £50 note if one appears in open cash. I am not clear what the logic is for this but it is a rare event!

Gift Aid can always be claimed on cash in envelopes, whatever the size of the congregation, even on £50 notes.

Could I therefore ask those who attend 8am communion to please put cash in a green envelope and fill in your details? I know this may seem a small matter but every little helps.

Meanwhile a brown eared bat (identified from its diet by an expert) roosts in the roof of a shed of mine eating moths and shedding the unwanted wings on to a table underneath.

WILDLIFE BLOG: Go to www.underriver-village.com and scroll down to Wildlife Blog and you will see the impressive variety of birds seen by Alan over the last few months. Please contribute any wildlife observations you have.

PAINTED LADY BUTTERFLIES have been common this summer.I saw a patch of thistles recently smothered with Peacock, Tortoiseshell and Painted Lady butterflies. Such “weeds” have a purpose!

    UNDERRIVER HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The Autumn Show Saturday 7th September

This is a new venture because so many people were away in July for the Summer Show. The schedule for the classes is with this magazine and we hope as many families as possible will enter one or two this year especially if you haven’t done it before.

    Tea and Jazz

In the afternoon the Jazz band comes and plays for an hour or two, so do come and enjoy looking at all the exhibits, prize winning and deliciously per-fumed, have a cup of tea and fantastic cakes (it is Underriver!) The Summer Fete used to be a big Underriver occasion and it would be nice if we to get the families together at the start of the Autumn Term instead this year.

    Live shows on stage

On Friday 13th September at Sevenoaks’ Stag Theatre

(01732 450175), Stag Theatre alumni will perform Burn, a new

drama about surviving your twenties. You’re old enough to do

whatever you want – so now what? The real world is expensive,

dating is hard and your friends are too busy hustling from job to

job. The Stag tells us this play contains references to sex, drink-

ing, drugs, vaping and plenty of swearing and so may not be suita-

    ble for under-12s (or nearly-80s?).

From Wednesday 18th to Saturday 21st September at Tonbridge’s Oast Theatre

(01732 363849), the Oast’s Youth Theatre will perform Kate Hamill’s version of Jane Austen’s classic Pride and Prejudice. Outspoken Lizzy Bennet is determined never to

marry, despite mounting pressure from society. But can she resist love, especially when

that vaguely handsome, mildly amusing and impossibly aggravating Mr Darcy keeps pop-

ping up at every turn? But note that the Oast says this isn’t your grandmother’s Austen.

Bold, surprising, boisterous and timely, this Pride and Prejudice explores the absurdities

and thrills of finding your perfect (or imperfect) match in life.

On Thursday 19th September at Tunbridge Wells’ Trinity Arts Theatre (01892

678678), Theatrical Niche will perform Chekhov’s tragicomedy Uncle Vanya in a bit-

tersweet, multi-disciplinary new adaptation. Isolated and seemingly beyond help, the

weary inhabitants of one country household plunge head over heels in lust when a

beautiful stranger arrives. As the owner announces the sale of the estate for his own

gain, the strains of repression and a chaste rural life begin to bubble among the hard-

working occupants – until Vanya himself hits a palpable boiling point. This version of

Chekhov’s masterpiece is said to be infused with an example of contagion and the “Hive

Mind”, with the violent spread of discontent onstage mirroring the decline of the Bee.

Trinity’s guidance says this play is unsuitable for under-12s (or nearly-80s once again?).

On Monday 30th September at the Stag (01732 450175), Strictly Come Dancing

favourites Ian Waite and Vincent Simone will present their new production The Ball-

room Boys. They will be joined by two professional female dancers and a wonderful

vocalist. We are promised a night packed with dances, songs and loads of banter.

    Screened live performances and encores

    September’s screenings will include:

On 7th September, The Lehmann Trilogy from the National Theatre (maybe live

    - but check) (Trinity);

On 9th September, Il Barbiere di Siviglia encored from the Metropolitan Opera’s

    2006/07 season (Stag);
