Richard Jensen Richard Dale (Dick) Jensen of Cherokee, Iowa formally of Irene, passed away October 25, 2014 at the Cherokee Villa Nursing Home Cherokee Iowa. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Novem- ber 1, 2014, at Calvary Lutheran Church, Irene with Pastor Mark Ostrem officiat- ing. Burial will follow at Turkey Valley Cemetery and Hill Crest Cemetery rural Irene. Dick was the oldest son of Arlo and Daisy (Andersen) Jensen. He was born on No- vember 3, 1929 on a farm in rural Clay County. Dick at- tended Wakonda Star Town- ship country school through the 8th grade and Irene High School in Irene. At the age of 16, he en- listed in the Marine Corp, celebrating his 17th birthday in Peiping, China. He served five years as a Marine. He then re-enlisted in the United States Air force where he served for the next 23 years. During his military career he was stationed in China, Panama, Guam, Korea, Viet- nam, along with numer- ous bases throughout the United States. He was awarded nu- merous medals and com- mendations during his career, including his cher- ished Bronze Star, Meritori- ous Service medal, two commendation Medals with Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, along with four Campaign Stars for Vietnam and the Air Force Outstand- ing Unit Citation. Dick honor- ably served in WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Viet- nam War. Dick was a life member of the V.F.W., American Legion, DAV, Vietnam Veterans Asso- ciation, Scottish Rite, Ma- sonic Joppa 120 Lodge, and past member for 33 years of the Aloha Shrine. In 1958 Dick married Re- becca Lease in Ridgeley, West Virginia. To this union three children were born, Daisy (Penny), Candy and Richard Jr. (Jay). Upon retir- ing from the military the family purchased a farm near Freeman, Rebecca lost her long battle with cancer in 1983. In 1988, Dick mar- ried Florence (Flo) Reisner Fiedler. They lived on the farm west of Irene until 2010 when they moved to Chero- kee, Iowa to be closer to Flo’s family due to Dick’s de- clining health. Survivors include his wife Flo of Cherokee Iowa, daugh- ters Daisy (Keith) Halvorson, Dubuque, IA., Candy (Arlen) Halvorson, Edmond City, OK., and Jay (Becky)Jensen, Irene, stepchildren Leslie (Roger) Williams, Paullina, IA., Cindy (Dean) Gravenish, Mike (Angie) Fiedler, and Jeff (Lisa) Fiedler all of Chero- kee, Ia. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, numer- ous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his cherished friend Dick Sher- man and his wife LeAnna. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Rebecca and brothers Keith (KB) Jensen, Douglas Jensen, and Merle in infancy. This event will focus on the Medicaid expansion portion of the Affordable Health Care law. Jay Williams, Democratic candidate for State House, will be leading a discussion of the Medicaid expansion focusing on the economic impact of the rejection of the expansion by the state government. In an effort to inform voters about the issues and the candidate positions on these issues, the Yankton Demo- cratic Party has been hosting a series of meetings during this campaign season. Gordon Arnold Mettler was born February 15, 1933 to Jacob F. and Magdalena (nee Mettler) Mettler on the family farm four miles north of Menno, SD. He was bap- tized by Reverend Huene- mann and confirmed by Reverend Korn in Zion Re- formed Church. Gordon graduated from Menno High School in 1951 with his twin brother, Ger- ald. He attended Augustana College prior to serving in the U.S. Army from 1953 until being honorable dis- charged on September 15, 1955. When he returned, he attended SDSU and gradu- ated with a Bachelor of Sci- ence in 1959 with a degree in Animal Husbandry. He married Patricia A. Conrad on August 25, 1956 in Cali- fornia, and they started to farm north of Menno until he was injured in a farm ac- cident, which left him quad- riplegic. After returning from the hospital, he started an insurance business. He also taught an Adult Veteran Ag Class for two years. In 1969, he became the Busi- ness Manager at the Menno School District until his re- tirement in 1994. While in the insurance business, he also opened a tax counsel- ing business, which he ran until 2009. In 1995, when the Menno Pioneer Heritage As- sociation was organized, he served as the treasurer until 2013. He was a lifelong mem- ber at Zion Reformed Church. He sang in the church choir and in the community Men’s chorus. Gordon is survived by Pat, his wife of 58 years; four children: Rhonda (Danny) Poole, Renee Met- tler (Terry Isaacson) and daughters, Taryn and Hanna, David (Patty) Met- tler and son, Lucas, and Tri- cia Mettler (Kevin Gray) and children, Zane and Kai; his brother, Ray Mettler; sister- in-law, Carol Mettler, and brothers-in-law, Clifford Handel and Forrest (Barb) Conrad. He was preceded in death by his parents, sis- ters: Cecilia Huenemann, Elsie (Willard) Herrboldt, Erna (Robert) Tueting, Helen Handel, brothers, Ger- ald Mettler, and Calvin Met- tler, and two siblings who passed in childhood, Richard and Hildegard, as well as cousins, nieces and nephews. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church. Lau- rentia was united in mar- riage to Ralph (Pete) Bonertz on June 10, 1953 in Yankton. She had a love for the outdoors and being a farm wife, especially garden- ing. She also loved her sewing, craftwork and being a mom. According to City Man- ager Amy Nelson, the sig- nal is an older model that requires additional work and outside help to correct a malfunction. Nelson told Monday’s meeting of the City Com- mission that the city and state were working to fix the problem. No timeframe was offered Nelson said while this doesn’t mean the signal is going to be removed, there are plans to replace it with a newer model during con- struction of Fourth St./Highway 50 next year. Gordon Arnold Mettlerwas born February 15, 1933to Jacob F. and Magdalena(nee Mettler) Mettler on thefamily farm four miles northof Menno, SD. He was bap-tized by Reverend Huene-

mann and confirmed byReverend Korn in Zion Re-formed Church.

Gordon graduated fromMenno High School in 1951with his twin brother, Ger-ald. He attended AugustanaCollege prior to serving inthe U.S. Army from 1953until being honorable dis-charged on September 15,1955. When he returned, heattended SDSU and gradu-ated with a Bachelor of Sci-ence in 1959 with a degreein Animal Husbandry. Hemarried Patricia A. Conradon August 25, 1956 in Cali-fornia, and they started tofarm north of Menno until

he was injured in a farm ac-cident, which left him quad-riplegic. After returningfrom the hospital, he startedan insurance business. Healso taught an Adult VeteranAg Class for two years. In1969, he became the Busi-ness Manager at the MennoSchool District until his re-tirement in 1994. While inthe insurance business, healso opened a tax counsel-ing business, which he ranuntil 2009. In 1995, when theMenno Pioneer Heritage As-sociation was organized, heserved as the treasurer until2013. He was a lifelong mem-ber at Zion Reformed

Church. He sang in thechurch choir and in thecommunity Men’s chorus.

Gordon is survived byPat, his wife of 58 years;four children: Rhonda(Danny) Poole, Renee Met-tler (Terry Isaacson) anddaughters, Taryn andHanna, David (Patty) Met-tler and son, Lucas, and Tri-cia Mettler (Kevin Gray) andchildren, Zane and Kai; hisbrother, Ray Mettler; sister-in-law, Carol Mettler, andbrothers-in-law, CliffordHandel and Forrest (Barb)Conrad.

He was preceded indeath by his parents, sis-

ters: Cecilia Huenemann,Elsie (Willard) Herrboldt,Erna (Robert) Tueting,Helen Handel, brothers, Ger-ald Mettler, and Calvin Met-tler, and two siblings whopassed in childhood,Richard and Hildegard, aswell as cousins, nieces andnephews.

ing. She also loved hersewing, craftwork and beinga mom.

A traffic signal at the in-tersection of Fourth St. andDouglas Ave. that has beenblinking for nearly a weeknow is not on the choppingblock.

According to City Man-ager Amy Nelson, the sig-nal is an older model thatrequires additional workand outside help to correcta malfunction.

Nelson told Monday’smeeting of the City Com-mission that the city andstate were working to fixthe problem. No timeframewas offered

Nelson said while thisdoesn’t mean the signal isgoing to be removed, thereare plans to replace it witha newer model during con-struction of FourthSt./Highway 50 next year.
