Club Car Service Helps Design, MaintainSophisticated Golf Car Storage Facilities

Unfortunately, vandalism of golf cars has become a common occurrence atgolf courses these days. Joyriding vandals whose antics regularly make theheadlines can cost golf course ownersand operators thousands of dollars. So itmay surprise some to learn that moredamage is actually being done by coursepersonnel before the cars ever leave thestorage facility.

“People don’t realize that most ofthe damage done to golf cars happensinside the storage facility, when cars arebeing brought into the facility or beingremoved,” said Jason Lutes, Club Car’stechnical training instructor and golf carfacility designer. The good news, Lutesadds, is that most of that damage can beeliminated through a well-designed andoutfitted facility.

Facility design and consultation is one of thevalue-added services Club Caroffers customers constructingnew storage buildings or recon-figuring existing ones. In the last 15years, Lutes estimates that Club Car hasadvised nearly 2,000 customers on waysto maximize their space and improveaccess in and out, thereby reducing dam-age. A more effective rotational patternalso often results from the consultationand design, improving the efficiency ofelectric fleets.

Lutes and his team work withowner/operators as well as architects anddesigners to provide standard or customlayouts for car storage. In addition tospace allocations, the plans also coverpower and amperage requirements forchargers and recommendations on venti-lation, charger positions and placementof AC and DC cords.

While in the process of designing or redesigning their storage facility, many courses are also taking advantageof Club Car’s energy management experience to find ways to lower theirelectric bills. “Energy management isn’t

a one size fits all situation,” said ScottAustin, Club Car’s energy managementspecialist. “We conduct an analysis ofeach storage facility to evaluate its golfoperation and consider energy costs inthe local market. With that informa-tion, we’re able to help customersmake informed decisions about theirenergy management options.”

Following their energy analysis, many courses have opted to installClub Car’s Watt/Miser EnergyManagement System with surge pro-tection equipment. The system allowsthe course to charge its golf cars atnon-peak times, when energy costsare lowest.

“These aren’t cart barns anymore – they’re more sophisticatedthan that,” Lutes said. “When peopleremember that the golf car fleet isone of their most important andexpensive assets, they realize thevalue of a well-designed storage facility.”

Golf Car Storage Tips

• Store cars a minimum of six inches from

any wall and 12 inches from the nearest car.

• Install wheel bumpers on floors to keep

cars from rolling into walls and other cars.

• Allow a minimum space of 5’ x 8’ for

each car. Less space increases the likeli-

hood of dings and scratches. For the

same reason, aisles should be a mini-

mum of 10 feet.

• Number all chargers and parking spaces

so cars are returned to the correct

space and a proper rotation pattern can

be followed.

British ColumbiaCart & Equipment LicensingThis has been an issue in BritishColumbia for the golf industry since1994. Research with other chaptersconfirms that the cart and equipmentrequirement is unique to our provinceand facilities. Other provinces havecoverage for their carts and equip-ment under the facility’s property/lia-bility insurance. Compounding theissue is the fact that implementationand requirement of the licensing poli-cy not only fluctuates from region toregion but is inconsistent for facilitiesin the same region.

The provincial agency (ICBC) deal-ing with the requirement is aware ofthe discrepancies and at present onlywishes to work with the golf industryin BC to standardize the policy. It is theintention of the Chapter and AdvisoryBoard to make a formal presentationto address this unfair and unnecessaryrequirement.
