Sports Day on Wednesday and President’s Day on Thursday gave them the opportunity to perform, celebrate and be rewarded for fine performances and effort. This rounded off a term that included exams, the amazing through-school musical Joseph, Lives Week and work experience to demonstrate exactly how we inspire our students to exceed their expectations. There was a buzz around the school site in May as a filmcrew descended on LVS Ascot to put together casestudy films of five students who encapsulate theprogress, attainment and development thatstudents at the school can achieve. WithJunior, Senior and Sixth Form students allfeatured – plus a former student whocontinues to excel – thriving in a range ofdifferent areas, the films are testimony tothe inspiring relationships betweenteachers and students at the school. LVS AscotCelebrates As Year13 Students LeaveFor Bright Futures

In June, LVS Ascot took part in the national finalsof the Translation Bee competition in Cambridge,where Year 9 student Bethan Newell gave afantastic performance. In the semi-finals, after atie-break round and a sudden death round, shequalified for the finals in German. Bethan wasone of 44 contestants (out of 14,476 who startedthe competition) to compete in the nationalfinals and won 3rd place in her category, anamazing achievement.

At the end of May, Year 13 students bade their farewells to LVS Ascot attheir Leavers’ Celebration. Families gathered at Windsor Parish Churchfor a service that included readings from the Heads of School. TheHarte and Garter Hotel across the road was then the scene of lessformal celebrations, with teachers swapping anecdotes and memoriesof the students, much to their delight! Afternoon tea and presentationscompleted the day.

Post-MortemLectureQuiteAn Experience

Almost 100 students and adults attended aspecial Smalley Lecture on 3rd May, theVIVIT Post Mortem Experience. Samuel Piriexplained the basics, including the fourareas always examined: head, chest cavity,spinal column and abdomen. Afterexplaining how the cranial examination iscarried out, the attendees were invited tocarry out the procedure on a pig’s head. Asession on all other components

demonstrated the function of the lungs,the heart and the oesophagus. Finally, theabdominal contents were laid out for thestudents to examine. All attendeesenthusiastically engaged with the eventand learnt lots about how the body works.There were many inspired to take up, orreaffirm their decision to study, medicine,biology, veterinary medicine or bio-engineering.

Senior School students took the lead role on and offthe stage when mentoring their Junior counterpartsin June for the spectacular summer musical Josephand the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Youngactors in Years 7 to 9 danced and sang alongsideJuniors in Years 5 and 6 to help them develop theirconsiderable acting skills and perform in front of over200 people per night on the school’s professionalstage. Their performances demonstrated what aninspiring and progressive drama department LVSAscot has, drawing standing ovations at all fourperformances.

LVS AscotWelcomes BackFormer StudentsAt Alumni Event

A host of former students aged 18 to 80+ returned to LVS in June atthe annual alumni event. A fabulous atmosphere saw old friendsreunited with each other at the school where they met. A drinksreception was followed by an eagerly anticipated tour that took inthe sports department, science labs, swimming pool and libraryamongst other areas. The afternoon ended with a barbecue as thosepresent continued to catch up with their friends and former teachers.LVS Ascot’s leavers this summer, and any former students, can jointhe alumni by emailing [email protected]

Scorching PerformancesAt Sports DayDespite the heat, Senior Sports Day was a fantastically well-supported event in the last week of term, with many Year 11and Year 13 students returning to take to the track and field.It provided a great atmosphere, with lots of school recordsbeing broken. These included Isabella Izod breaking the 30-year shot record (10.68m) and Jacob Berry breaking the1994 long jump record of 4.86m. This year, new events wereintroduced such as the 300m, three legged race, hurdles,and sack race. These were a great success and added toinclusivity offered at LVS Ascot. The PE staff were beaten bythe students in the relay, but their training paid off as theygained revenge in the tug of war. Congratulations go toBoarders who won the Sports Day Trophy for 2018. 04

Students from Year 8 to Year 12 enjoyed afascinating trip to Iceland over Easterwhere they swapped the school’s indoorpool for a trip to the Blue Lagoon, a warmpool fed by water from a nearbygeothermal plant and one of Iceland’smost famous tourist attractions. Visitingthe UNESCO site, Pingvellir National Park,allowed students to see the Mid-AtlanticRidge and stand with one foot on theNorth American Plate and the other onthe Eurasian Plate – a huge thrill for allthe geographers! Another highlight wasthe visit to Gullfoss, one of the mostbeautiful and most famous of the manywaterfalls in Iceland, and visiting theinfamous Eyjaallajokull glacier volcanothat caused air traffic chaos when iterupted in April 2010.

A host of representatives from thepublic sector joined forces at LVSAscot in April as the school deliveredan inspiring perspective on differentways to approach further education.Speakers from the Merchant Navy,RAF, Police, NHS and Met Officerevealed the ways to access fundedfurther education through

apprenticeship options within theirorganisation. The school alsowelcomed back former students TomSlingsby (Easyjet) and Ben Viney(Laing O’Rourke) who talked aboutthe training available to them on thejob as they successfully develop theircareers.

Duke ofEdinburghGoes FromStrength ToStrengthThis year, DofE participation hasincreased yet again, with expeditionsproviding rewarding trips for studentsover the summer term. Participants havevolunteered in libraries, swan sanctuariesand dog shelters and learned new skillsfrom photography to cooking and

participating in a huge variety of sportsto complete their sections. Well-travelledstudents have experienced expeditionsfor Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards inlocations from the Chilterns to the NewForest, the South Downs to Snowdoniaand Brecon Beacons to the River Wye. It

has been fantastic to see so manystudents challenge themselves with thisunique experience which will hopefullyinspire many more students to flourishand take on the fantastic opportunityprovided to all students atLVS Ascot.

CricketThe U13s put in a superbperformance to win the BerkshireCounty Plate. In the semi-final, theywere 36 for five chasing 129, but LewisHall saved the day with a magnificent 77not out. The final against Reading Blue Coat schoolwas more straightforward, bowling them out for 124and reaching the target with eight wickets to spare.FootballThe U13 football team stayed overnight at Oswestryfor the Society of Heads Cup Final against NewcastleSchool for Boys. There was no tense, nervousperformance as the boys expressed themselves fully,winning 10-1. The U13 girls also finished 2nd in the ISFA footballtournament and qualified for the national cup final,which is a fantastic achievement. Also in girls’ football,congratulations to Chloe Donellan in Year 8 who hashad trials with AFC Wimbledon and been offered aplace with them. TennisAn excellent effort from the U13 boys tennis team sawthem win through to the final of the tennis league,and we wish them all the best in that.AthleticsThe Athletics squad has been working hard, beatingpersonal bests and gaining lots more medals this year.District level success saw Josh Padalia come 2nd in the800m, Harrison Dodd win the long jump and come2nd in the hurdles, Freya Ruffels win the 800m andIsabella Izod win the shot put. At county level Isabellacame 3rd in the shot put and at the ISA NationalAthletics in Birmingham she won the shot put whilstFreya won the 800m, both really notable achievements.HockeyIn June, Luisa Northing represented England again athockey versus Germany, an inspiration to many LVSAscot students who are undergoing county trials.Both the U13 and U15 girlshockey teams won theirRBWM league, anothersuperb achievement.RowingMany pupils took to the waterrepresenting the school atEgham Regatta justbefore the end of term,producing a numberof impressiveperformances tocontinue to build onthe Boat Club’ssuccess this year.

CARLSBERG GIRLS Exam season saw everyone impressed bythe academic focus of the Year 11 students who revised hardfor GCSEs. They were excellent role models for students inYears 5 to 10, who sat end of year exams. House trips included

the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and the Heritage Open Day at theRoyal Military Academy, Sandhurst, plus trips to Greenwich, Brightonand Thorpe Park. National Boarding Week saw Carlsberg host a disco,join in the Big Bake Off organised by Bass and the Film Nightorganised by Gilbey, plus the Talent Show where Carlsberg swept theboard with 1st and 2nd place! A time capsule was buried containinghouse artefacts and messages from the girls to students of the futureas from September Carlsberg becomes Osborne House.

GUINNESS BOYS Another exciting and fun packed termfor Guinness House with numerous trips including ThorpePark, Brighton, Go Karting and Paintballing. GuinnessHouse is very proud of all the boys have achieved this term

and this year, fighting hard in the house competitions includingvictory in cricket and basketball. A display of camaraderie, loyaltyand determination also helped Boarders claim the Sports Day Cup.Guinness House looks forward to a well-earned, restful holiday andto coming back together for another action packed year inSeptember under the new banner of Hampton House.

GILBEY HOUSE – SIXTH FORMERS Summer term startedwith a team of 14 from Gilbey House tackling the fearsomechallenge of Tough Mudder in West London. They bravedbarbed wire, ice baths and 10,000 volts to complete the

course in just over five hours which was a huge achievement for allinvolved. A more leisurely evening was enjoyed at the annual HouseDinner – ‘neon fiesta’ themed this year – and at the 2018 Leavers’Celebration in Windsor where goodbyes were formally said to allthose leaving – a day of very mixed emotions as the baton is passedon to next year’s senior boarders. Term finished with a day puntingon the Isis in Oxford and the traditional Boarders’ Summer BBQ.Gilbey House wishes everyone a very restful and relaxing summerbreak before it returns in September as Blenheim House.
