Message from EO

Happy New Year everyone and here’s to a very positive and productive 2019.

In this first edition the focus is on our current 11 Major Sponsors who have pledged their additional financial support to the CMAWA for the next 6 month period. The income we receive from all members go a long way to ensure the Association remains in a strong situation so we can follow our Strategic direction and achieve our goals. It is timely to remind ourselves of our purpose and the five core objectives in our Strategic Plan 2018-2023

To be recognized and accepted as the Peak Body which represents the Cabinetmaking trade in Western Australia

To support members uphold the standards and quality of workmanship

To support members to enhance their profitability and productivity

To increase consumer awareness on the benefits when selecting CMAWA member

To be an active participant in the drive to ensure effective and appropriate training of apprentices

The CMAWA Management Committee (Board) are focused to achieve the Associations core objectives and to offer support to those directly and indirectly involved in the industry sector. An aggressive yet achievable Business Plan is in place which reflects the key deliverables necessary to uphold our commitment to it’s members. These are regularly reviewed, assessed and adjusted accordingly so we maintain momentum. The role of a Board is primarily responsible for governing, overseeing the affairs of, and making strategic decisions for an organization and on behalf of its members. In order to properly oversee the affairs of an Association, a Board should ideally consist of board members who possess a mix of skill sets, diversity and experiences. We are fortunate to have a board in place that depicts this. The Executive Officer is the singular organizational position that is primarily responsible to carry out the strategic plans and policies established by the Board. So, my role is to manage the overall operations and resources and to be the main point of communication between the Board, Industry partners and its’ members.

2019 is already shaping up for some key milestones. The major highlights for the first few months include (1) the Audit on our financial operations which will show transparency of appropriate management and good governance; (2) our Annual General Meeting and voting in of the 2019 Board to take place end February (all financial members are entitled to be nominated for a Board position so if you wish to step up and contribute to this important role the AGM is the time). and (3) a likely positive outcome on our quest to review the Home Building Contracts Act. The survey responses have been collated and are currently with DMIRS for analysis. This will form the basis of the Consultation Paper due to be drawn up and open for Public comment over the coming weeks. We are still hopeful that our original timeframe will be met with the restriction on the deposit and progress payments eased by April 2019. (4) We will also make a determined effort to increase our membership base with a new business drive scheduled for February. The latest member benefit of a referral incentive should assist us reach our goal in this area, details are noted on second page.

Overall, we remain optimistic for a productive and positive year ahead for the Association. Both the Board and myself are always here to assist and support all members reach their individual goals and aspirations. Thank you each for all your support during 2018 and looking forward to working with you throughout a fabulous 2019.

Membership Subscriptions 2019 and referral system

Invitations to renew memberships for the 2019 calendar year were sent out to all

members prior to Christmas. Under our New Constitution, payments are to be received

within three months after the due date (due date being 1st January) otherwise Member-

ship and associated benefits may cease. We trust you will each continue your partner-

ship with the CMAWA. Whilst the membership fees remain the same for 2019 we

continue to enhance the member benefits. A reminder that all current financial

members can enjoy huge rebates on their annual subscriptions. The way this works is on

a referral basis. When a member refers a new oncoming member who is accepted, the

referral member will receive a 25% rebate on their next year’s annual subscription. It’s a

basic principle but one that gives our members a chance to receive their annual member-

ship completely FREE—just refer four new members in the same year. There is a huge

potential to increase our membership base and by doing so, we can ensure sustainability

for your Association .

Safety in the Workplace

Upon returning to work after the festive break we should look at an orienteering or

reinduction process so that the gears are changed from rest mode to operational mode.

A commencement meeting with a theme of reinforcing the safety message and a quick

review of existing policies and procedures is a good place to start. Similar to the break up

party before the holidays, get the workers and staff together for a briefing, toolbox or

communication meeting at the resumption of work.
