Welcome

Dates for Diaries

A very warm welcome to the latest edition of Cronton News.

Since Christmas, life at Cronton has continued to be exceptionally busy with a vast range of extra-curricular activities.

Our students have travelled to New York, Barcelona, Switzerland, Paris, whilst also enjoying skiing in the French Alps. They’ve also taken part in numerous local and regional visits in addition to listening to an amazing range of guest speakers to inspire to educate.

We have been working hard to ensure that, together with our efforts to deliver outstanding exam results our young people also develop the skills that will help them to mature morally and spiritually. We hope that you enjoy reading this newsletter and can see that our students are getting a really good life experience here at Cronton.

With the summer term almost at an end, exams and the completion of coursework have been our main focus and yet our extra-curricular activity continues with yet another

industry standard production of Little Shop of Horrors by the Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts.

All of the staff at Cronton wish you an enjoyable summer and we look forward to meeting our new students in the autumn term.

Double success for USA bound studentsA level students Maegan Pratt and Rahim Raja are enjoying a double celebration after both students were accepted onto the prestigious Sutton Trust US Programme 2017, which will see them travel to America this summer to spend a week at one of the country’s top universities.

The highly competitive programme is aimed at high achieving students and this year it received over 1000 applicants, which was then narrowed down to just 150 students who were selected to take part in the international residential in July. The two Cronton students have successfully passed the application and weekend interview stage which took place in London in March.

Maegan, previously from Wade Deacon High School and Rahim, from St Gregory’s High School, are both studying their A levels at Cronton Sixth Form College. Maegan, who will be traveling on a plane for the first time, will be spending a week of her summer at the prestigious Ivy League, Yale University in Connecticut. At the same time Rahim will be traveling to Massachusetts to spend a week at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), which is one of the world’s top universities. Business Students Bring their Ideas to Widnes Market

Royal Society Guest Speaker

Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Business students at Cronton Sixth Form had the opportunity to gain valuable work experience and work with real businesses, during a marketing consulting project at Widnes Market.

As part of their business course, the students are required to design a promotional plan and marketing

materials for a small business. To bring their ideas to life, the students were given the opportunity to work as ‘marketing consultants’ with traders at Widnes Market.

Working in groups, each was assigned a local market trader as a client. The students then had four weeks to prepare promotional materials for the client, which

included; leaflets, posters, scripts for radio adverts, TV adverts (made with video editors), website designs and social media pages. The students then presented their work to the traders for feedback on their ideas. The project has been a big success and Widnes Market Manager Sara Munikwa is keen to run it again next year.

Five talented students who have recently graduated from Cronton Sixth Form have returned to the classrooms to inspire and encourage current students to plan for their next step to university and their future careers.

Luke Baker, Michael Cooke, Amy Milne, Gareth Maher and Rebekah Hanrey who all achieved fantastic results in their A levels last year came back to college to reveal their success stories to the current Cronton students in the hope to help them with their applications to university. They planned to give them an insight to the types of experience they need in order to achieve their career goals.

Luke progressed onto Newcastle University after graduating from Cronton last summer and he introduced the event by discussing his Biomedical Sciences degree. He encouraged the students to make sure that ‘you realise your dreams and never take no for an answer’.

Michael Cooke then spoke about studying medicine at the University of Leeds. He said he made sure he had lots of work experience and attended

a course to do the BMAT exam to secure his place at university. He was successful and told all of the students about how he is really enjoying his studies. Amy then echoed the advice about work experience and how vital it was in ensuring she had successful offers for her course. She is now studying a nursing degree at The University of Liverpool and she explained that she did not understand the importance of some of the work experience until she started her university interviews.

Gareth is currently studying a Chemistry Degree at The University of Manchester. He explained that he originally wanted to study medicine but over the course of his A Levels he developed an interest in research for life saving drugs and how that helped he make the next step onto the right course at university.

After receiving her A level results last summer Rebekah was delighted with her fabulous grades of two A* grades and a grade A. She explained to the students that she didn’t want to make any hasty decisions as she was unsure of what she wanted for her future career so she decided to defer

her university applications and take a gap year. This time has given her the opportunity to gain work experience in a variety of fields and has helped her to make the decision to apply to study medicine at university.

Muniza Waseem was the final student to address her peers. Muniza is a current second year student at the college but has already received an offer to study dentistry at university in September. She spoke about her experience volunteering at the Liverpool Women’s Hospital and explained that she had been able to answer questions at her university interviews relating to procedures she had observed at the dental practices she attended for work experience. Jill Greenhalgh, Head of the Tomorrow’s Doctors programme said, “The whole session was of great benefit to the first year students as they look to plan their next steps. The thinking behind the returning student’s strategies was both fascinating and insightful. What a wonderful set of students and we wish them all the best in their future studies!”

Little Shop of Horrors Leaves Audience Hungry for MoreCronton Sixth Form’s Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts wowed sold out audiences over two nights with their stunning final production of the academic year; Little Shop of Horrors.

Little Shop of Horrors is a horror comedy musical set in the early 60s, in the rundown neighbourhood of ‘Skid Row’. The story tells of hapless florist shop worker Seymour Krelborn who discovers a rapidly growing alien plant with an appetite for human blood and flesh.

The sold out performance amazed audiences over a two night run, plus two matinee performances for the pupils of St Cuthbert’s Catholic High School, The Prescot School, The Grange School, Ormiston Chadwick Academy and Wade Deacon High School.

The feedback received from the public has been overwhelming.

One member of the audience said “I have been to many of the college’s Performing Arts shows and once again the cast were outstanding and very professional. I was completely absorbed in the performances. Congratulations to everyone involved in this spectacular show.”

Matt Plant, Head of the Centre of Excellence for Performing Arts, said “Little Shop of Horrors has been a wonderful example of how the Centre of Excellence thrives on teamwork and ensemble effort.”

The students surpassed themselves again, but due to the demands of the puppetry, I think this may have raised the standards even higher as so much reliance on one another was necessary.
