Liz Hamilton Quay, Assistant Professor of Textiles & Material Studies at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, is driven by a relentless urge to describe feelings through materiality. Conceptually, Quay’s work is based on the tension or the stagnation that is generated through managing emotional balance. The journey is never smooth; therefore, she aims to capture the varying stages that emerge. As a sculptural fiber and materials artist, Quay is drawn to the manipulation of flexible materials. Her work tends to be varied in appearance but it thematically focuses on the clashing of soft and hard; the transformation of plain or seemingly ugly materials to reveal their beautiful and delicate qualities; and the act of piecing and binding. This is explored through the tension created by stitching and pulling, shape and form, rigid verses free-flowing, and the use of bodily-like materials. These elements come together to create the physical embodiment of maintaining emotional balance. Ultimately, Quay hopes to evoke an alluring outcome from the struggle.

Stephanie Wallendjack retired from a left brain focused work life and discovered the pure joy of creating with clay. She has studied under Jim Lard and Jerry Bennett, both of whom have mentored Wallendjack through her artistic journey. Paper clay (clay bodies with added cellulose fibers such as cotton, paper, hemp) has become Wallendjack’s preferred medium, through which she explores themes of solidity versus weightlessness, and opacity versus translucence. She finds these dichotomies to be intriguing and the joy of creating to be life-giving.Call 717-236-1432 or visit www.artassocofhbg.com for more information.

By Curator Rachel O’Connor

The Art Association of Harrisburg is honored to present two separate exhibitions; Hope, Memory & Pride: Artists View Equality as well as Bits & Pieces of the Past, simultaneously on view from October 18–November 21, with an opening reception hosted by Cynthia Graeff and Robert Potter on Friday, October 18 from 5-8pm. Beer donated by The Millworks, featuring music by Jonathan Frazier.

Hope, Memory & Pride: Artists View Equality is a collaborative effort with the LGBT Center of Central PA celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Riots which acted as a springboard for the gay rights movement. This exhibition features work by various artists who have created pieces inspired by Pennsylvania’s LGBTQ+ history as a way to honor the champions of the LGBTQ+ community from the past, and express the need for further equality in today’s world.

Bits & Pieces of the Past features work by Maria Maneos and Brush With the Law. Maneos is the Founder and Executive Director of Brush With the Law, a 501(c)(3)organization providing public art projects for disenfranchised populations. Maneos earned her Bachelors of Fine Art Degree from Arcadia University and her Masters of Fine Art Degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts located in Philadelphia, PA. Her work comes from a place of personal discovery - be it unconscious, subconscious, or conscious - typically a mix of all three – encompassing many layers. She often starts with an exact image such as a photograph or film still, but as the painting progresses, it evolves surreptitiously, allowing Maneos to let go of the idea of a perfect idealized image and create something more human. Layering produces a history, a depth, and a reflection on choices made that led to the end result – just as in life. Her paintings have been shown extensively in the Philadelphia area, and in 2018 her sculpture titled, 5535-2017 was shown at the State Museum of Pennsylvania. The title reveals the number of deaths due to heroin/opiate overdose in PA alone during 2017. She won First Place in Sculpture and the Purchase Prize Award for Art of the State, where her work is now part of their permanent collection. In 2013 she started Brush With the Law as an outgrowth of her work at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Rehabilitation where she developed a class using the arts for therapeutic purposes; and her son’s addiction to heroin, which inevitably led to his arrest, conviction, and sentencing to prison for a non-violent offense. Despite how heartbreaking this road was, it ultimately led to Maneos discovering her purpose in life. Brush With the Law uses the visual arts in community-based beautification projects throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Projects are led by professional artists who create together with socially marginalized people (such as the incarcerated, parolees/probation, at-risk youth, and those struggling with addiction) to create public art. The purpose is to inspire meaningful changes in participants’ self-esteem and provide new skills that can lead to better employment opportunities, while enabling local communities to work with and come to better understand the challenges of these populations.

Well-known portrait artist Katriel Srebnik will introduce his unique teaching approach of “Concepts, Principles & Techniques” as applied to contemporary Impressionist oil paintings of people on Sunday, November 10, at 2:30 PM at the Art Association. His demonstration will include: establishing the composition, and light and dark masses; capturing the effects of light and atmosphere; selecting and mixing colors on the palette and canvas; expressing the subject in a painterly manner; and helpful studio tips.

Katriel Srebnik’s artwork has earned thirty-one national awards, including First Place for Signature Members and three Awards of Excellence from the Oil Painters of America; The President’s Award from the American Impressionist Society; Best of Show from the Academic Artists Association and Texas Art Museum; and First Place from the National Society of Artists. His work has appeared in nearly all the leading national art magazines; in over seventy national juried and eight museum exhibitions; and in galleries throughout the US, London and France, as well as his own galleries in Santa Fe and Charleston. Mr. Srebnik has taught workshops in over twenty-five art schools, colleges and other venues.

Interpreting romantic figures, interiors, and Parisian scenes with light, atmosphere, and expressive brushwork to evoke a mood and ambience, Srebnik creates his unique style of contemporary Impressionism that ranges from painterly Naturalism to “brushy Tonalism” when employing more subtle color tonalities. Katriel Srebnik is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society and Oil Painters of America, and a member of The Portrait Society of America. Additional information and images of his artwork may be found at www.SreGallery.com.

A $10 donation is requested at the door for Srebnik’s demonstration at the Art Association on Sunday, November 10, 2:30pm.

Renowned Painter to Give Demonstration at AAH

Awaken to the Joy of the Season!Long a Parisian tradition and derived from the French term for “awakening,” Reveillion made its way to the US through New Orleans. Originally observed in the 1800’s as a feast for parishioners returning from midnight services on Christmas Eve, Reveillion offered a late-night celebratory brunch scenario. But by the 1940’s, war and austerity brought an end to Reveillion.

But now, Reveillion has had its own re-awakening and not just on Christmas Eve. A month-long party until New Year’s Eve awakens the city of New Orleans.

Please join us as we continue Harrisburg’s Reveillion tradition and “awaken” to the impending joys of the holiday season on Saturday, December 7, from 6 to 9pm! A dressy and glittery season welcome awaits, with luscious treats by John Keck and the festive music of creative Jonathan Frazier. Our Reveillion hostess is Tracey Meloni in her new-to-us Forest Hills/Stonegate home at 4088 Greystone Drive, Harrisburg.

Due to the intimate size of the venue and limited parking, this gathering is LIMITED to 25 attendees! Make your reservations of $75 per person early by visiting www.artassocofhbg.com, or calling the Art Association at 717-236-1432.
