News Junior News

We have been busy over the last two weeks with the Cancer Council Big Morning tea, Education Week and harvesting some of the plants from our class gardens (see pictures below).

Reading: In Prep we are heading into the Jolly Phonics sound home straight! We have learned all our single letter sounds and are moving into the last digraphs and vowel blends. It is really important that you continue to build a good home routine for practising sounds, word lists and reading take home books. The Grade 1s and 2s have been using ‘Flippy Dolphin’ to flip the sounds in unknown words and ‘Back up Bear’ to back up and reread when we notice we are losing focus. We are also currently assessing all students for their reading levels for the Term 2 reports.

Writing: In writing, the Preps are building our confidence to apply the letter sounds we are learning to the words we want to write. We are continuing to work hard on our pencil grip and letter formation. The Grade 1/2s have continued writing narrative stories. They have been practising the use of connectives to join their sentences and adjectives to make their writing more interesting. The students’ latest writing piece has been about their very own monsters!

News Mathematics: Preps in the last fortnight have been concentrating on ordinal numbers, different ways of representing numbers to ten and reviewing location words. It’s really important that the students can not only orally count objects, but make, count and compare groups, as well as recognise number symbols. In Grade 1 and 2 the focus had been on adding numbers by using double and near double facts to help them. The students are also learning to read and interpret data. They have been interpreting their own and other types of data including, bar graphs, tables and picture graphs.

News 'We have been learning how to write narratives in writing. We have been trying to include 'sizzling starts' and 'endings with an impact.' We have also tried to include 'Wow' words to engage the readers. Here is a story by Lily P in Grade 1/2 TS.

Lily’s Tooth

“Oh My!” Cried Lily. “My clean, white tooth is so wobbly that I can bend it backwards and forwards!” Then Mum asked Lily, “Can you please stop touching it? Please?”

“OK!” replied Lily. Suddenly, Lily’s tooth fell out. She was very excited. Her mum was very relieved.

Lily put her tooth under her pillow that dark night. Later the Tooth Fairy couldn’t find the tooth.

Lily woke up in the morning and for an hour Lily Freaked out. “My tooth fell out of my red and blue bed. Where has my tooth gone? Do you mean? Oh wait. I found my tooth!”

The next morning Lily woke up with two dollars from the amazing Tooth Fairy. “Thank you so very much Tooth Fairy.” Lily said.

“You’re welcome!” The Tooth Fairy said quietly in Tooth Fairy Land.

Have a great fortnight! Mr Clarke, Ms Hayes, Ms Tampaline and Mrs Smith

Teaching our Boys to Respect Women by Dr Justin Coulson Dr Justin Coulson is one of Australia’s most respected and popular parenting authors and speakers. He is sought after for his expertise in family life, relationships, and wellbeing and resilience. This is a very interesting and thought provoking article about how we teach boys to respect all women. I highly recommend all families should read this. https://www.justincoulson.com/respectwomen/ Stuart Beever

Bully poster: When addressing your child’s concerns around an issue that may have occurred at home or at school, this poster might be a useful tool to use. We have begun using it to educate our students and families around the topic of bullying. We encourage you to review it with your child.

Yarra Valley Psychology You may not know but Yarra Valley Psychology works with students from our school, at our school. Their website says: ‘The friendly and experienced psychologists at YVP provide a safe place to hear

your young person’s concerns. They can help them decide if they would like

anything to be different in their life and how this might happen. There is no

pressure to speak about things that they are not ready to talk about or to make any

changes they don’t want to make. Psychology & Counselling involves many

techniques to help them when they are facing difficult times.’

If this is a service you require or may need in the future, please visit their website or contact our office.

Maths: This week for Maths the students have been working though some very tricky place value problems: from decimal place conundrums to multiple set fraction equations. Some of the students have also been playing games like Greedy Pig and Buzz to practise their skills, as well as doing a lot of computations in their maths books.

Reading: In Reading this week we have been searching for ‘Cause and Effect’ as a part of our CAFÉ reading focus. This has been a fun topic to cover as it is not only about what happens and what effect different events have in a text, but also what this can mean in real life. It has been fun finding examples of this at school. For example, the cause is the students ran really well at District Cross Country and the effect was the students were very happy and tired.

News Writing: In writing this week we have been looking at different forms of persuasive writing- from advertising vocabulary to debating skills. Students have even been writing their first job applications! Our persuasive language has come a long way this year and it is great to hear that students are starting to use it when they speak… even when trying to persuade their teachers in the classroom that they need a whole class reward! Homework Fun: It is great to see so many students trying really hard to answer maths questions, practise their spelling words at home and bring their homework book in every Friday. Some of the effort that students are making with their at home work is really starting to impact on their achievements at school. At Fairhills Primary we use homework to support student learning that is occurring in the classrooms, but also to help students develop the organisational skills that will assist them in their future. If a student is unable to bring in their homework or their reading diary, we offer Homework club and Reading Club which gives them the opportunity to complete their tasks and to feel confident in their achievements.

News Fairhills getting involved

Location 139 Boronia Road, Boronia Victoria 3155 Bread tags come in many shapes, sizes and colours. Made of high impact polystyrene, they have a good recycling value. It takes 200kg of tags to bring in enough money to buy a wheelchair. Mary Honeybun founded the organisation in Cape Town in 2006. From these bread tags, they recycle the tags and use the money to purchase 2 to 3 wheelchairs to adults and children around South Africa every month! Having a wheelchair gives the recipient independence and mobility and this makes a big difference to their lives and their families. Collecting bread tags, even broken ones, makes a difference to our environment too as they are recycled into seedling trays, picture frames, coat hangers and other items. We can collect our bread tags here at school and Mrs Smith will drop them off at the ‘Here and There Makers’ shop in Boronia. Or you can drop of your collection of bread tags directly to the ‘Here and There Makers’ shop in Boronia. Either way, let’s do good for people & our planet.
