Welcome, April!
I was born in Casper, Wyoming and lived in Gillette, Wyoming for ten years before moving with my parents and two older sisters to New Jersey. After a few years in New Jersey, we relocated to Littleton, Colorado were I completed middle school and high school. I attended University of Colorado, Boulder and studied environmental studies and business management. I also attended the Boulder College of Massage Therapy and am a Certified Massage Therapist. My passion for massage therapy led me to a job opportunity at a resort property in San Fransisco, California. My desire to be in the mountains and closer to family brought me back home to Colorado. I have lived in Steamboat Springs for thirteen years and have worked in the massage therapy industry (Sports Med at YVMC, and The Spa at One Steamboat Place) and in the healthcare industry (NW CO ENT) as a medical office manager. My fiancé and I recently bought a new home in Routt County with our two dogs (Rukus and Ruger). I enjoy snowboarding, hiking, dirt biking, fishing and all of the outdoor recreation that this amazing valley offers.
I am excited to be a part of the RCCOA and the SHIP coordinator. I will be coordinating shuttle drivers, Meals on Wheels, taking lunch and shuttle reservations, as wells as planning events and assisting with various daily duties. I look forward to hearing any suggestions or needs that you may have. I will also be coordinating the SHIP (Medicare assistance) program and am happy to answer questions or direct you to a Medicare counselor.

Importance of Eating A Healthy Breakfast
Breakfast is an important step in starting your day. Breakfast provides you with energy, enhances your focus, and helps to prevent overeating. This handout will explain why it is important to make breakfast a priority and offer some great tips on which food choices to make in the morning.
After 8 to 12 hours overnight without food, your body needs to refuel its glucose levels. Breakfast provides your brain and your muscles the energy that they need to sustain activity throughout the day.
People who eat breakfast have a better attitude towards work, higher productivity and are better able to handle tasks. Those people also have more strength, endurance and better concentration and problem-solving abilities. Plus, breakfast helps you reach your daily recommended calories and nutrients.
Why do we need a healthy breakfast?
A balanced breakfast of carbohydrates, proteins and fat causes a more gradual release of energy over the entire morning, maintains your blood sugar levels and delays hunger until it‛s time for lunch.
When breakfast consists mostly of sugary foods,
you experience a quick rise in your blood sugar; causing a surge in energy. But after about an hour, your blood sugar and energy levels decline and you‛re hungry again, long before lunch.
Overcome Barriers to Breakfast
"I'm not hungry in the morning." Start your day with a cup of 100 percent fruit juice or a piece of whole-wheat toast. Later when you are hungry, eat a mid-morning snack - a hardboiled egg, low-fat or fat-free milk or yogurt, low-fat string cheese or a whole-wheat bagel.
"I don't have enough time in the morning." Stock your kitchen with easy-to-prepare foods such as breakfast cereal, instant oatmeal, small bagels, whole-grain toaster waffles, yogurt and fresh fruit.
"I'll gain weight." There is no evidence to support the belief that eating breakfast will make you gain weight. In fact, skipping meals has been shown to lead to overeating at snack time or the next meal.
"I don't like breakfast foods." Breakfast can be any food you like. A bowl of soup, a lean meat sandwich or leftovers all make a fine breakfast.

What war was Memorial Day started to commemorate?
The Revolutionary War WWII the Civil War WWI
Originally, Memorial Day was first known as what? (Hint: the day begins with the letter “D”)
Why do we celebrate Memorial Day?
On this special day of remembrance, should the American Flag be half-raised all day, half-raised until noon, or
fly in all her glory at full mast all day?
What is the nationally recognized flower of Memorial Day?
In what war did the most U.S. service people die?
What sporting event is always celebrated on Memorial Day?

Tai Chi is an ancient martial art form proven to be an effective
exercise program promoting physical and mental well-being.
It especially benefits older adults because of the gentle
flowing movements, coordinated abdominal breathing and
mental concentration used in the practice.
Tai Chi develops balance and creates a relaxed mental state.
The techniques learned in the practice of Tai Chi help
integrate mind and body into harmonious inner and outer self.
Many participants agree that practicing Tai Chi helps them
feel happier, healthier and more fulfilled. Over 300 million
people world-wide practice Tai Chi regularly!
A new basic Tai Chi Class starts on
Tuesday, June 3rd at the Steamboat
Community Center with instructor,
Susan Shoemaker. Now’s the time to get
started and learn for yourself the life-
long health benefits of Tai Chi. No
special equipment is needed, just dress
comfortably and be ready to move gently
in a safe, non-threatening environment.
People with physical limitations or those
just getting started with an exercise
program will find this class a perfect fit for their ability.
A second, more advanced class, continues throughout the year
with instructor Nancy Smith. This class has been working
together for a long time, memorizing many Tai Chi routines
that flow together into a beautiful, harmonious dance. If
you’re not quite sure if Tai Chi is for you, please stop by the
Steamboat Community Center on Tuesday morning from
10:30-11:30 am and check out what Tai Chi is all about.
Tai Chi for Health: Learn the Basics
Tue. 9:15 am starting Jun. 3
Tai Chi for Health: Practice the Art
Tue. 10:30 am, ongoing class.

Basic Tai Chi Class or any other Aging Well programs
and services, please call 871-7676.
The Benefits of Tai Chi
Have You Had Your Tdap?
Colorado continues to report
epidemic levels of whooping
cough (pertussis). In 2012, the
state saw a steady increase of
pertussis, resulting in a total of 1,518 (known)
cases for the year - the 5 year average being
514 cases a year. This was the highest rate since
1948. Adults accounted for 20% of the cases.
Pertussis resembles other common respiratory
infections and is probably under-reported. As a
result, the number of actual cases would be
much higher. Over the last 3 years, many other
states are also experiencing a 3-fold increase.
From 1940-1945, more than 1 million cases of
pertussis were reported in the U.S. With the
introduction of a vaccine, rates gradually
declined. By 1970, less than 5,000 cases were
reported in the U.S. Still the disease persisted,
and cases began increasing in the 1980s.
Young infants, <6 months of age, are at greatest
risk of severe pertussis. They are too young to
be immunized or fully immunized against
infection. Infected infants struggle to breath
and are frequently hospitalized. Deaths from
pertussis can occur. In 2005, two infants in
Colorado died; in 2012 an older adult died.
Even adults who had pertussis in the past do not
have lifelong immunity.
Vaccination continues to be the single most
effective strategy to reduce morbidity and
mortality caused by pertussis. If you are
unsure if you have had the Tdap vaccine, ask
your doctor’s office to check your records. If
you have not received it, make a vaccination
appointment.
Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurse Association
is offering drop in vaccine clinics at the
