I lost a very good friend in a motorcycle accident on Thursday. It wasn’t his fault. Most motorcycle accidents aren’t the rider’s fault. His rear tire blew and he lost control of his bike. There was no chance. There is no protection when you are on a bike. There were good things about last week. Some great visits. Leominster is a great club and they are very busy working on membership. I enjoyed a very relaxed breakfast in Southborough. They agree that bringing new members to a 5:30 “on the way home” meeting can attract new members. I was very impressed when I saw a beautiful building with a waterfall inside the entryway in Uxbridge’s new location. The facility can impress new members as well. Montachusett is bringing in 3 new members and has asked me to come back to induct them soon. Every club has their own way of welcoming new members. The Marlborough Club is very active with projects including the Reality Fair where high school students get a chance to learn about life in a game format. Parents of these children get a view of a small part of what Rotary does as they see their children learn at this great event. Throughout the district, I get asked many questions about membership including how to induct them and keep them inter- ested after they join. I hope all the clubs will send representatives to the Forum on August 29. Every membership chair, president, foundation chair, new member and more should attend. Comments were offered by Jack Hoell, Executive Director of the Center and Rotary President AllenThomas. They empasized the cooperation between the two groups that resulted in a wonderful addition to the facility. Camp Paul was founded in 1968 by Anna St. Germain and Ray Paul. The program and facilities grew and, in 1995, it became The Paul Center for Learning and Recreation, In. The center's mission is to "assist individuals with disabilites in developing their maximum potential and independence." The Chelmsford Rotary Club has long supported a variety of educational programs. In addition to helping The Paul Center in the past, the club has funded both The Chelmsford Alumni Association scholarship program and The Town of Chelmsford Scholarship Fund; provided dictionaries for all third graders in Chelmsford; funded the Chelmsford High School Student of the Month and Student of the Year program and sent selected sophomores to the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy. When the Rotary learned that some cabins at The Paul Center needed repair or replacement, it decided to replace one. Club President John Taylor worked with members Denise Marcaurelle, Marian Currier and Kathy Howe to secure the necessary permits and the services of Mr. Brian Reidy of Birchwood Construction. He built the new cabin. Rotary members Leonard Doolan, Jack Hoell, Charles Keen, John Taylor and Allen Thomas stained it and additional work was donated by carpenter John Corbett. also The leadership of both The Paul Center and The Chelmsford Rotary Club are excited, not only about the completion of this cabin, but about the potential for the repair or replacement of other cabins. Through the construction of this cabin, architectural drawings were done, a bill of materials was created, and much was about the permitting process and the kind of oversight necessary for a project of this type. All of that should make it easier for future projects. Register on clubrunner NOW for the membership and foundation forum. CLUB HAPPENINGS:

New Clubs Hold Key to Membership GrowthThis was taken from the www.rotary.org web site.

Just two years after completing his Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship, Corbett Parker, 28, started the diverse Rotary Club of Houston Skyline, Texas, USA.

Parker, who studied in the Netherlands in 2005-06, has long identified with Rotary. “I believe that knowledge calls, ultimately, for a life of service,” he says.

After completing law school, Parker took a job as an attorney in downtown Houston, an area where Rotary had little presence. When he talked with local Rotarians to see how

he could keep Rotary in his life, he saw an opportunity: Bring Rotary back to Houston’s downtown area, and attract young professionals who work there.

Chartered in June 2008, the club now has more than 30 members, who range in age from 23 to 50 and include Latin and African Americans as well as immigrants from

Africa, Eastern and Western Europe, and South America. Five Foundation alumni, including Past District Governor D’Lisa Simmons, also have joined.

Parker, who served as charter president, brought a fresh approach to the club. Meetings take place over cocktails in the evening to accommodate work schedules. Members

under age 35 pay lower club dues. Outside meetings, fellowship continues through text messaging and social networking Web sites like Facebook and LinkedIn.

The Houston Skyline club is not the only new club playing an important role in membership growth. In many districts, start-up clubs are helping to bridge the age gap that

sometimes inhibits younger prospective members from joining. Below are some more examples of newer clubs that are creating their own niche in the Rotary world and help-

ing to build membership:

On the outskirts of Amsterdam, 21 people gather at De Houten Vier restaurant each week. The newly chartered Rotary Club of Amsterdam-Arena exemplifies the diverse mem-

bership that Rotary International leadership has stated is necessary to keep the organization strong. http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/090306_news_diver-

sity.aspx" \t "_blank" Read more.

Three former members of the Rotaract Club of Rushden, Northamptonshire, England, came up with the idea to launch a new Rotary club after they had turned 30 and could

no longer qualify for "http://www.rotary.org/en/StudentsAndYouth/YouthPrograms/Rotaract/Pages/ridefault.aspx" \t "_blank" Rotaract. The Rotary Club of Rushden Higham has

an average age of 32, and all but four of its members are female. "http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/090320_news_rhigham.aspx" \t "_blank" Read more.

A five-year-old Japanese Rotary club is expanding its membership by recruiting Foundation and RI program alumni. The Rotary Club of Kanagawa Shonan, Kanagawa, which

began as a gathering of young professionals, was chartered on 15 December 2004 with 23 former Ambassadorial Scholars, Group Study Exchange team members, and Rotary

Youth Exchange students. "http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/090528_news_kanagawa.aspx" \t "_blank" Read more.

The Rotary Club of Duluth Superior Eco, which spans the border between Minnesota and Wisconsin, USA, is focusing its energies on helping the environment while reaching

out to younger members. HYPERLINK "http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/090116_news_ecoclub.aspx" \t "_blank" Read more.
