Parent/Teacher Conferences!!
Another reminder that our Fall Parent/Teacher meetings will take place next Thursday, November 15th and Friday,
November 16'h. We thank those of you who have already registered for your conferences and we look forward to seeing
you next week. To those of you who have not as yet scheduled a date and time to meet with your child's teachers, we
encourage you to register online. Attached to this newsletter is a flyer which provides detailed information about the
conferences including instructions for scheduling your parent/teacher meetings. If you have any questions or if you need
assistance, please call the main office.
It's hard to imagine, but our first marking period will be coming to a close next Wednesday, November 14'h. Report cards
will be completed for each of our students and they will be sent to you in the mail, prior to the Thanksgiving break. As
we noted in the past, your child's report card is an extremely important document which is used to keep families
informed about how your child has progressed in school. They also help you to understand and gain greater insight into
areas of strength and need for your child. After you receive the report card, please feel free to contact your child's
teachers with any questions or concerns. As always, we welcome your feedback and are looking forward to working with
you throughout the months ahead to ensure that your child has the best year ever.
Please see the attached flyer titled "Fundraising". Each year we try to find ways that will help us to partially defray the
rising costs of field trips, extracurricular activities, and incidental costs associated with events that go beyond the regular
school day. Many families shop online and a major website for making purchases is AMAZON.COM. The attached flyer
provides information about raising money for our school when shopping on AMAZON. By selecting AMAZON.SMILE and
choosing Newgrange School as your charitable organization, we will receive a O.5% of your total purchase. It's a great
way to help raise money for our school while doing your online shopping. Thank you for your help and your continued
support of our children and our school.
Our Thanksgiving Sharing Food Drive has always been one of our most worthwhile community service projects. We are
continuing to collect food item donations, which will be used to help us assemble dinner baskets for families in need in
our area. If you are able to help us with this project please send your food donations to school with your child. Many
thanks for your kindness and your generosity.
In closing, please remember that school will be closed for both students and teachers on Thursday, November 8'h and
Friday, November 9Ih. Also, please be reminded of our schedule for next week. Monday and Tuesday we will follow a full
day schedule. The remainder of the week, including Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, children will follow our early
dismissal schedule. If you have any questions, please call the main office.
Have a great four-day weekend. Enjoy!
Ms. Jeanne Cruz
Happy November! We've had a busy start to the autumn season.
Spanish
Students in Spanish have been plugging away at the online curriculum in New Jersey Virtual School, learning basic
vocabulary, noun gender, definite/indefinite articles, and the many similarities and differences between cultures in
various Spanish-speaking countries. I"m looking forward to seeing the final results of the Spanish I cultural project, travel
brochures for the Spanish-speaking country of each student's choice.
Consumer Math
Our Consumer Math class began this year with a business proposal to create Newgrange spirit items. We created the
items with our Cameo Silhouette machine and had our first sale at Fall Family Fun Night (thanks to all for supporting our
business!). During this time, we've been calculating costs, deciding on sale prices, and predicting revenue. We're
currently in the midst of creating an order form to be sent home in future newsletters. We have been bookkeeping
manually, and students will soon be introduced to the process of using formulas in our spreadsheet.
Transition Intensive Program
In Life Skills, students are in the midst of our cooking unit, having made the following recipes so far: Oven Roasted
Potato Wedges, Breakfast Frittata, Lemon Spaghetti, Ice Cream Cone Treats, Spooky Spider Deviled Eggs, and Parmesan
Chicken Bites.
During in-school SLE, students have been making copies, laminating, sorting, filing, collecting, counting and organizing
box tops, taking down and putting up bulletin boards, and keeping laptop inventory for the entire school.
At ShopRite, students have been bagging for customers, as well as shopping foringredients for our cooking unit after
their shift is over. Students have developed relationships with cashiers and are sharpening their customer service skillswhile interacting with customers.
On Friday, we said goodbye to the greenhouse for the season (we'll be back in the Spring!). The last few weeks have
been dedicated to cleaning up the gardens and preparing the grounds for the winter frost.
Please get in touch if you have any questions. Thank you for entrusting your children to us!
Warmly,
Jeanne Cruz

November Theme: "Giving Thanks"
Here is a bit about the Science behind Gratitude! Expressing appreciation is a wonderful way to introduce students to
the practice of gratitude. In addition to making us feel better, the practice of gratitude helps us use our prefrontal cortex
(PFC) more effectively. Feeling grateful can trigger the release of dopamine to the PFC. This dose of dopamine increases
alertness, determination, attentiveness, and energy. Research has shown that students who formally practice gratitude
get better grades, are more socially integrated, are more kind and helpful to others, and show fewer signs of depression.
It is a simple, but incredibly powerful practice.
Did you know? Studies have shown that people who regularly practice gratitude
-feel 25% happier
-are more likely to be kind and helpful to others
-are healthier, more enthusiastig interested, and determined
-sleep better
Who knew saying "Thank you" has such a positive impact on our health and well-being?!
Home Activity:
At the end of each day stop and think about a time that you said "Thank you". Think about how it made you feel, and
then how do you think it made the other person feel? Are there things you might be thankful for that you don't usually
say you're thankful for?
Mrs. Cooper-Braun
To coincide with the theme of Heroes and Heroism, some of my English classes have been learning about King Arthur
and the Knights of the Round Table. After reading excerpts from John Steinbeck's Arthur and His Noble Knights and Sir
Thomas Malory"s Le Morte d'Arthur, the students are now embarking on a webquest that requires research and creating
collaborative Google Slide presentations. This project encompasses Core Content Standards for Language Arts that
include research, digital presentations, and public speaking.
In my Reality 101 classes the students all made Halloween treats in the ILS using the Get Ready, Do, Done, Get Done
model to target executive functioning skills. They are also using a program called Identifor that Ilearned about at the
Autism NJ Conference. This program assesses skills through online game playing and creates profiles for each student
that points them in career directions they may be well-suited for based on their abilities. It was created by Cuong Do, an
executive with Samsung who is also on the Board of Directors for Autism Speaks. He created this program to help with
transition planning for his own son who has autism.
The Social Strides mall trip and gift exchange party is fast approaching. This year it will be only for the Social Strides high
school students and their teachers. The trip will take place on Tuesday, December ll'h, and the party will be on
Thursday, December 13'h. More details will be coming home soon ! Enjoy the long weekendi
Mrs. Bruder
I would like to begin by expressing my thanks for everyone who helped make this year's Fall Family Fun Night a success!
Everyone from the students who made the scenery, parents and staff who came out to help set up, staff members who
ran the crafts, games, and food, and all those who helped clean up all afterwards took part in what I believe was the
"best one yet"! I have received much positive feedback, but my very favorite type is just how excited the students were
to take part in such a big project. Yes, we already have a theme for next year and are already discussing ideas!
Our classes have been keeping us busy. We have been working on topics from the "Unstuck and on Target" curriculum
during social strides classes. In science, my classes have completed their rockets and rovers and are awaiting a dry day to
go outside to launch them. We will now begin our unit on the interconnectedness of Earth's major systems. In physics,
students created amazing roller coasters out of pipe insulation. They worked beautifully and we were able to identify
points of potential and kinetic energy in action. In OG, we have been moving forward with new affixes and roots-
everyone has been doing very well. Pre algebra has also been full of learning opportunities. We have been solving
equations, graphing inequalities, and combining like terms. In language arts, students have been writing wonderful
stories and summaries. We have also been completing Framing your Thoughts lessons, adding to our knowledge base as
we move forward. The novel that we are reading, Hello Universe is really getting exciting- it is great to see how the
characters are all beginning to "fit" together!
We are looking forward to the upcoming events such as the bowling trip and the holiday season. It is great to see just
how much everyone has accomplished up to this point in the school year!
Mr. George Chis-Luca
Health and Physical Education classes are going very well. We are continuing are emphasis on fitness and cooperative
activities during PE. Students seem to be enjoying working together and improving their overall fitness. We are
currently working on football skills and games. Our next unit will be basketball. In Health, students are working on
nutrition basics focusing on making healthy food choices. Wishing everyone healthy and happy holidaysi

The Newgrange School of Princeton, Inc. will receive O.5% of
purchases made through Amazon Smile. It is easy to do. Next time you are
shopping on Amazon, choose AMAZON.SMILE. It will ask you to pick
your own charitable organization - please type in: 'Newgrange. Both our
schools come up: Newgrange and Laurel Schools. Pick this one and start

With the holidays approaching, this is a great time to shop
AMAZON.SMILE and help our students all year round.
We know this will make you smile. Tell your family and friends too.
Thank you.
ISJewgrangeParent/Teacher Conferences
Parent/Teacher Conferences are an extremely important part of your child"s overall program. The conference is an
opportunity to meet with your child"s teachers to see and hear about all of the wonderful accomplishments that your child
has experienced so far this year.
HOW /T WORKS
To better accommodate our families, and to ensure every staff member is adequately prepared to discuss your child's
progress with you, we are asking each family to register for one of our Conference Blocks as listed below:
Thursday, November IS, 2018 Friday, November 16, 2018
Block #1: 2:00pm to 4:30pm Block #3: 2:00pm to 5:00pm
Block #2: 5:00pm to 8:00pm
You may arrive at any time during the Block for which you register and visit with any teacher in any order you prefer.
Conferences for each subject will be kept to a 15-minute time frame. You may, however meet with a teacher for
consecutive 15-minute intervals if that staff member teaches your child more than one subject. Please understand that you
may have to wait to see a particular staff member, so please allow yourself ample time. If time does not permit you to see
a staff member, a Phone Conference sign-up sheet will be posted outside each staff member's door.
HOW TO REGISTER
Please go to www.thenewgranze.orz, select Calendars and select one of the Conference dates/times to register.
Please understand that if you do not register, our staff may not be prepared to meet with you about your child. If you are

* While your child may have class in a different room as listed below, please see the desired staff member on the

THANKSGIVING
SHARING
As the holidays approach, we think about those around us who
may be less fortunate. Newgrange would like to continue ourlong-standing involvement with Catholic Charities to providelocal families in need with Thanksgiving baskets. As part of acommunity service project coordinated by our younger SocialSkills classes, our students are sponsoring a school-wide fooddrive. Our goal is to provide at least seven families with acomplete Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. Below is
a listing of what we will be collecting. Students may bring intheir donations to school any time up until Monday, November19th.
Thank you to everyone in advance for your support!
