JANUARY 2021 Page 1 of 10 Happy New Year!! It is hard to believe we are nearing the end of 2020 (Thank Goodness!). What a challenging and unusual year it has been. As we approach the New Year, I encourage you to reflect back on your fa- vorite moments from this past year and spend a few minutes indulging in the joy that brings you. Then think about how you can double or triple that feeling as we move into this new year and what it might take to do that. Is it volunteering? Is it spending more time at home with loved ones? Is it finally retiring or maybe just the opposite and finding a part time job that you enjoy? Ask yourself what you are good at, what you enjoy and what YOU want to do. I no longer make resolu- tions because to be honest, I ALWAYS break them within the first week of the New Year so now, I prefer to think about things I can improve on but not set limits. As we enter this new year, the re- alization that I only have a handful of months remaining as your President arises and that means Newcomers needs volunteers to serve on our upcoming board. Our Vice President, Linda Pinkston is leading the nominating committee and is looking for members to serve in various positions such as communications, newsletter, Vice President, programs, etc. We need YOU to step up and volun- teer to keep your organization operating. 512-705-9744

You must be a current member of Georgetown Newcomers and Friends in order to participate in our SIGs, either as a regular or a substitute.

A complete listing of all SIGs is available on our club website. At the present time, several of the individual SIG interest groups and their members have decided to meet and continue on with their SIG activities. All SIG activity will resume when the restrictions from COVID-19 are lifted.

    New SIGs

Two new SIGs are in the making: Mahjong and Wine. Fall in Central Texas is a perfect time for a game of golf and the game can be played using COVID-19 guidelines. And any season is a good time for enjoying wine with friends. These groups each have a leader and a short list of possible members. There are also more than a few people interested in a new games group, as our other games groups are at capacity. All we need is a leader to step up in order to get it going. Contact Mimi Rhea at [email protected] or 512-705-9744 if you are interested.

hour and are exploring the many parks and

    walking trail in the area.

Get on their contact list to find out where they

are going and how you can join them by calling:

    Barbara Hansen at 210-355-1917 or

    MAHJONG

    CALLING ALL WINE CONNOISSEURS!

    Special Interest Groups (SIGs)

    looking for new members

We are looking for members who want to learn how to play Mahjong. This SIG would be for beginners. We’ll learn the object of the game, the equipment used, how the tiles are traded to begin the game, all about creat-ing hands and playing, and of course, how to “MAHJONG”! If interested, contact Ruby Branham [email protected] (281) 687-7316 or Donna Hood [email protected] (512) 569-1602.

Have you been waiting for an opening in one of our al-ready established wine SIGS or thinking of starting a new one? If your answer to either or both of these questions is “yes”, and you are interested in participating in creating a new wine SIG, then contact Donna Hood at [email protected] (512) 569-1602. Together we would determine the goals of the group, frequency/locations/times the group would meet, member capacity, what a meeting agenda might look like, what is to be served dur-ing the meetings and how to offset the cost of what is

served by the host/hostess. But, most of all, we would create a group that is fun, enjoyable, and fosters friendships.

A poem Sheila Mills found on-line

I asked a friend who has crossed 70 & is heading towards 80 what sort of changes he is

feeling in himself? He sent me the following:

1 After loving my parents, my siblings, my spouse, my children and my friends, I have

    now started loving myself.

2 I have realized that I am not “Atlas”. The world does not rest on my shoulders.

3 I have stopped bargaining with vegetable & fruit vendors. A few pennies more is not

going to break me, but it might help the poor fellow save for his daughter’s school fees.

4 I leave my waitress a big tip. The extra money might bring a smile to her face. She is

toiling much harder for a living than I am.

5 I stopped telling the elderly that they've already narrated that story many times. The

story makes them walk down memory lane & relive their past.

6 I have learned not to correct people even when I know they are wrong. The onus of

making everyone perfect is not on me. Peace is more precious than perfection.

7 I give compliments freely & generously. Compliments are a mood enhancer not only

for the recipient, but also for me. And a small tip for the recipient of a compliment,

never, NEVER turn it down, just say "Thank You.”

8 I have learned not to bother about a crease or a spot on my shirt. Personality speaks

    louder than appearances.

9 I walk away from people who don't value me. They might not know my worth, but I do.

10 I remain cool when someone plays dirty to outrun me in the rat race. I am not a rat &

neither am I in any race.

11 I am learning not to be embarrassed by my emotions. It’s my emotions that make

    me human.

12 I have learned that it's better to drop the ego than to break a relationship. My ego

will keep me aloof, whereas with relationships, I will never be alone.

13 I have learned to live each day as if it's the last. After all, it might be the last.

14 I am doing what makes me happy. I am responsible for my happiness, and I owe it

to myself. Happiness is a choice. You can be happy at any time, just choose to be!
