I. Sights in New York
1. Times Square – some information about it
Times Square in New York City is found at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and
it is called like this because the New York Times Square building (“T.S.1”). It is the tallest
skyscraper in New York. It stretches from West 42nd Street to West 47th Street and it is the
center of the Broadway theatres of Manhattan.
There are about 40 theatres in the district around Times Square and enough fast food chains
and cafés, so that you will not be hungry. You also find souvenir shops for buying souvenirs
for yourself, your friends or relatives, but also fancy restaurants, cinemas, the MTV studios,
Sony and the headquarter of “Vogue” magazine. Times Square has plenty of illuminated signs.
It is famous for this. Times Square has its own riot police and its own garbage collection which
is organized by Times Square Business Improvement.
Some historical facts about Times Square:
In the 1930s Times Square was officially divided into two sections. The southern end was
named Times Square and the northern end was renamed Duffy Square.
The "Naked Cowboy" –
who is not actually naked
– has become a legend on
Times Square for decades.

of the ‘’New York Times” newspaper.

2. The Empire State Building
The Empire State Building was built in 1931 and was finished on March 17th 1972.
The ESB is 443,2 metres tall and has 103 floors. The elevator just takes 50 seconds to the 86th
floor. Inside the elevator is an e-wall where you can watch a movie about how the tower was
constructed. The Empire State Building is so amazing that it appeared in about 90 movies
from all over the world. The most famous one is King Kong. Inside the building up to 15.000
workers are employed and everyday 10 to 20.000 people enter the building, most of them
being tourists. On a clear day you can see as far as 45 miles from the top.
3. Central Park
The Central Park is a
famous urban park in the
middle of Manhattan. It
was opened in 1873.
Everyday 500.00 people
enter the park. It is 4,7
kilometres long. The
Central Park is popular
for the zoo and for the
grey squirrels.
It is next to the Museum of Natural History.

4
DID YOU KNOW?
…that the ESB is located right in Midtown Manhattan on 350
Avenue and between 33rd and 34th Street
…that the ESB does not just have 103 floors, but has 74 lifts in
total
…that the ESB was the world’s tallest building from 1931 until
1972, but then the World Trade Center was built
…that when the World Trade Center collapsed in 2001, the ESB
was again the tallest skyscraper in New York until the new One
World Trade Center was reconstructed
…that the queue to enter the bulding is often very long and you
have to wait at least 30 to 60 minutes if you want to enter
…so better wear comfortable shoes

4. The Statue of Libery
The Statue of Liberty was built in the year 1875. It is 93 metres tall and was
inspired by the French architect Édouard René. It was a sign for the American
Independence. It was a present by the French people and was given to the
inhabitants of New York on 18th October. If you like to visit the Statue of Liberty,
first you have to take a bus which brings you to the docks in the southern part of
Manhattan. There you jump on a ship which either takes you to the island and
you can visit a museum or the ship takes a tour around the Statue of Liberty.
Inside the statue you can find a museums about the history, the building itself
and other interesting information.

5. 9/11 and Ground Zero
On the 11th September 2001 19 hijackers took over
four US planes.
Two planes flew into the Twin Towers of the Word
Trade Center which were the highest buildings in
the southern part of the island Manhattan. The
Twin Towers burned and collapsed which resulted
in the death of 2750 people.
After that people built the Ground Zero.
Nowadays the Ground Zero covers the
area of the former and destroyed Word
Trade Center.
6. One World Trade
Center
After you have seen this
breath-taking place, you have
to see the One World Trade
Center. It is the tallest building
in New York City. To build this
amazing Center, it took more than eight years. The One World Trade Center is
541.3 metres tall and it’s the sixth highest building in the word.

II. The top 8 inside tips of New York City
1. New York High Line Park
The green park is above the roofs of New York and is a good place to recover. It
was an overhead railway, but nowadays it is abandoned. The entry is free of
charge and it opens at 7.00
am and closes either on 7, 8,
9, 10 or 11.00 pm depending
on the season of the year.
On the High Line you have a
fantastic view over Chelsea
and Meatpicking District,
but you can also relax, eat in
delis and see live-
performances of artists. For people who like sports there are different wellness
courses for example Tai Chi.
2. HBO Film Festival in Bryant Park
If you are in New York in the
summer, you can go the HBO
Film Festival in Bryant Park.
From July to August every
Monday you can watch classical
films like Casablanca,
Ghostbusters or Footloose. It is great that you don’t have to pay at all. There are
tables and chairs, but most New Yorkers are sitting on big blankets and enjoy
what they bring in their picnic baskets.
9
3. Rockefeller Center
You can find a good view in many parts of New York, but if you don’t want to
wait in the queue of the Empire State Building you can go to Rockefeller
Center. On the roof, there is the ‘Top of Rock Observatory’. Up there you have
a wonderful view over New York. The
viewing platform is protected by tall
walls of glass. That gives you a great view
and allows you to take breath-taking
photos.
4. Feast on the Chelsea Market
The Chelsea Market is at the Meatpicking District in a very big hall. The hall
was a cookie factory where the famous Oreo cookies were invented. Now
they are selling cupcakes, bread and fish but you can also eat Italian
specialities and enjoy
drinking a glass of wine. At
the market is a small bakery
which is called Sarabeth’s.
They sell delicious cookies
and people who are very
hungry should try the
‘Pumpkin Waffle’.
10
5. City Hall Metro Station
A special subway station down in the City Hall, built in 1904 and closed 40
years later takes you on a time trip. Now you can marvel at1 wonderful
architectural details and decorated glassy elements. The station also pours
on2 a nostalgic charm. If you want to get your own idea of3 this, you can book
a tour through the City Hall Metro Station or use the subway line 6 to the
terminal, but don’t get off there. The subway will drive a loop and pass
through the station. Then you will see the station only for a moment, but it’s
cheaper than the tour.
6. Food
Pizza, cronuts, hot dogs or steaks – in New York you can eat what you want.
So here some tips for restaurants, which you have to visit: Katz’s Deli (Here
you should order a pastrami sandwich.),
Bleeker Street Pizza, Gray’s Papaya for
super hot dogs and Serendipity III for
unbeatable desserts (especially
recommended is the “Forbidden Broadway
Sundae”, see on the right).

7. ‘’The Water Table’’
Another inside tip is a boat trip with ‘’The Water Table’’. Tickets for this tour
should be booked around one month in advance4 and will cost 50 to 70$ per
person. The boat is an old naval vessel5 and from the viewing platform you
can see many sights, for example
the Brooklyn Bridge, the New
York Port and the Statue of
Liberty. To eat there is a tasty
three-course-menu, which you
get on the two and half hour trip.
The tour starts in Greenpoint in
Brooklyn.
8. Brooklyn Bridge
In Brooklyn there aren’t only trendy quarters, for example Williamsburg,
Brooklyn Heights & Dumbo, but you also have one of the best views on the
New York Skyline. Especially in the evening it’s recommended6 to follow the
expanding front along the East River. A short stop should be absolutely be
made at the
Brooklyn Bridge
because from the
bridge you can
probably take the
most stunning
photos.

IV. Famous parts of New York
1. China Town
China Town is in the southern rim of the Lower East Side in Manhattan. It is a very big street.
It is on the Canal Street, Mott Street, Pell Street and Doyers Street and there are about 200
restaurants. The best “dim-sum restaurant” is the “Nom Wah Tea Parlor”, the second best
restaurant is “Jing Fong” and the third best restaurant is “Dim Sum GoGo”. You can eat
shrimps, meat and vegetables. It is very delicious. More than 80.000 people live in this
traditional part of Manhattan.
2. Little Italy
Little Italy is on the east side of South of
Houston in Lower Manhattan and right next to
China Town. The most famous street is the
“Mullberry Street”. More than 40.000 people
live there, but only 5% of the inhabitants have
Italian roots. It is the best place to enjoy
pasta or lasagne, but the most popular food
is pizza. Italian food is the 5th famous food of
New York. In Little Italy you can also buy
clothes and the houses look like original
Italian ones.
16
3. Brooklyn
The Brooklyn Bridge is the most famous sight of Brooklyn, a part of New
York east of the Manhattan Island.
The Brooklyn Bridge was originally called the New York and Brooklyn Bridge
and the East River Bridge.
The construction of the bridge was completed in 1883.
It is 1833,68 metres
long and 25,91
metres wide.
It is built over the
East River which
enters the Atlantic
Ocean right next to
it.
Constructed by John August Roebling.
The Brooklyn
Museum was opened
in 1895.
It is the second
biggest museum in
New York City.
The engineers were named McKim, Mead and White Daniel Chester French.
You can see a lot of famous modern art there
You can easily go there by taking the subway.
17
Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a park in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.
There are plants from all over
the world.
The Botanic Garden has
725.000 visitors every year.
You can visit the Botanic Garden
at 990 Washington Avenue.
It’s similar to the well-known
Palmengarten in Frankfurt.
4. Harlem
Harlem is the northern
section of the New York City
borough of Manhattan.
It was named after the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands.
In the past century the Italian mafia
was very strong there.
Many famous music artists and
rappers are from Harlem, like f.e.
ASAP Ferg.

V. History and specials about New York City
1. Ellis Island
In the past many people went to America. In 1892 Ellis Island was opened as a
place for immigrants and by 1924 twelve million immigrants had entered the
USA. Nowadays Ellis Island is a National Monument and a museum
Ellis Island in the past:
Why did so many immigrants enter the USA?
There have been many reasons. Some people weren’t allowed to practise their
religion or they were poor and hungry. In America they could realize their
dreams what they weren’t able to do in their own country.
Could everyone enter the USA?
No, only the smartest could stay.
So some people were declined
that’s why this island is also called
the island of tears.
Ellis Island today:
Since May 11th 1965 the island is managed together with the Statue of Liberty
as a part of the statue of liberty national monument and as a memorial by the
central park administration.
19
How can you reach Ellis Island?
You can reach this monument by taking a ferry from the Battery Park.
What can you see there?
There is a museum which can provide you with a lot of information about the
past of the USA and the immigrants. Every half an hour there is a guided tour
through the museum. There are also some quotes of the immigrants like:
“This is the only country where you are not a stranger, because we are all
strangers.”
It is not guaranteed that you will come back happily from your visit to the
island…
20
2. Special events in the city
Here are two special events in New York which are in our opinion the most
spectacular and interesting events. If you are in New York you should really visit
at least one of these festivals and events.
Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade
Macy’s Inc. is the largest warehouse operator in the United States with 728 branches. The
headquarters are in Cincinnati, Ohio. The main house is in New York City, one of the largest
department stores in the world and particularly well known. The company is listed on the New
York Stock Exchange.
One of the most popular holiday parades in America is Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade.
This parade begins at Central Park west and ends at Macy’s Herald Square. There you can do
many things. You can buy a balloon or listen to bands. But not only that there are cheerleaders,
dancers or really cool celebrities. That is exactly the reason why you should arrive very early,
because there are more than 8.000 people enjoying the spectacle. Since 1924 it’s a tradition
that began as a day of giving thanks for the blessing year. It’s every year on 23th November
from 9:00 in the morning until 12:00 p.m. and each year it gets bigger and better. Not only
because of the huge balloons, there is a great atmosphere, too. If you want to go there, you
can get there by subway.
21
New York Fashion Week
New York is known as the most popular city all over America. Not only because
of the trendy food, the skyline and the Statue of Liberty, but also for the latest
fashion at the New York Fashion Week. It takes place four times a year and it has
many famous designers, photographers, stylists and beauty experts. But not only
designers have the honour to be there, also models like Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid
or other models. The last New York Fashion Week was from September 7th until
14th. But don’t be sad, the next Fashion Week is definitely coming and begins on
February 8th until 16th in 2018. Many famous labels like Michael Kors, Alexander
Wang or Victoria Beckham are presenting their new collections.
So you should really go there and check new trends or even the trendiest
collections!
22
3. New York City’s nightlife
New York offers an incredible range of nightlife activities. You can go to bars and
clubs or maybe there is even a festival or a stand-up comedy show:
The number one of the clubs is the Bossa
Nova Civic Club.
There are other bars and clubs like
the No. 2 club in NYC: Good Room
When you don’t like them then there is
another club which is ranked as the
third best club in NYC: Black Flamingo
PS: It’s really expensive to have a party in NYC. Maybe you prefer
one of our other options…
23
Rooftop Bars
I know that we talked about bars and clubs now, but one of my favourite places
especially the Rooftop Bars, in which you have a brilliant view over the city and
can get some nice cocktails with your friends. I will recommend you my three
favourites down below:
1. Gansevoort Hotel (Plunge Rooftop Bar + Lounge)
In this bar you enjoy one of
the best views over the city
with awesome drinks and
skilled DJs. The problem is
that you usually have to
wear some really fancy
clothes, because they have a
strict dress code.
And just to mention: If you want to get a table in this bar, you have to
reserve.
2. The Roof (on the PUBLIC Hotel)
The Roof is the first
rooftop bar which was
opened in Lower East Side,
but don’t think that this bar is
not popular. With its great
view of Midtown and
Downtown you can also see
the Empire State Building and
also the One World Trade Center.
24
3. Jimmy (on the James Hotel) SoHo
The Jimmy is just
a small bar, but
with some
bonuses. For
example you will
sit in a nicely
decorated garden,
in which you can have a great lunch with your friends.
If you are not really a party person, but you just want to laugh and have
fun you could choose a:
Comedy Club
I have some friends who are not really enjoying to party. That is why I invited
them to some great Comedy Clubs. Here you find my top three selection:
1. Stand Up I NY
This club is a
great place to
laugh and
listen to the
great Stand-
Up comedians
here in the
club. But make sure that you are in before 10:15 in the evening to get a
seat, because the shows are normally sold out.
25
2. Comedy Cellar
The Comedy Cellar
is the most popular
comedy club in
Manhattan. Before
the show starts you
should probably
eat and drink
something in the upper floor. And please be early, if you want to get
a good spot to watch the show.
3. Broadway Comedy Club
In this club you will see many celebrity comedians, who started their
career here. One show features four stand-up comedians.
We hope you enjoyed our selection.
Your options for going out in New York are simply unlimited
and the city offers a place no matter the mood you are in.

The ferry’s dock is located at 4 Whitenhall Street.

29
VII. Things to do in two days
First you need to plan your trip before you will visit New York. You need to go
and visit some sights, because you won’t have much time.
A standard double-decker bus tour is perfect and it also doesn’t take so much
time and then of course, you also need a map of the city. There are some very
good apps which offer various maps of the city or ask for one at a tourist
information office.
Here is one of my favourite guides:
It starts in Central and will go over
to Ellis Island. There are many
sights that you have to see and
also cool restaurants and
shops you can go to. There is
everything you need, but one
thing isn’t there. You definitely
need a place where you can
sleep, so you must go to the
Ravel Hotel, because it costs
only 125$ per night and it’s a
four star hotel.
HAVE FUN!
30
Now that we have a guide, but we just have two full days in New York City. That
is why you find the most important and spectacular attractions in the following
text:
The Empire State Building is the classic one. Everybody visits the top of it on his
or her trip, because you have a great view over the enormous skyline of New
York. If you want to relax, go to the Central Park. There are lots of trees,
flowers, ponds and lawns for sunbathing. History is an important aspect, so you
need to go to the Ground Zero. It’s a monument or tribute for the victims and
their families. Over two thousand people died there on September 11th 2001.
But New York is not just and attractive city, it is also economically important
with the Wall Street. It is the biggest stock exchange in the world, so when you
need money, just go there and try your luck ;). I think after all of this you will
need some rest. You can get it around the Statue of Liberty which is located on
a separate island. In the night you need to go to the Times Square. There are
fantastic lights, TV screens and sometimes even special shows.
We all hope you enjoyed reading through our guide and now have
some ideas for a future trip to this fantastic metropolis.
