During the week of August 27th, each classroom had the opportunity to visit MOTAT. We walked from the school and arrived at MOTAT for a 10.00am start time. During the day we were split into two groups and completed a variety of different activities in these groups. The day was spent reinforcing our inquiry learning from the term, “Sharing the Planet”, which is all about forces, motion, and energy.

Half of our day was spent with an instructor building Rube Goldberg machines. A Rube Goldberg machine is an overly complicated machine that performs a very simple task. Rube Goldberg was an inventor and cartoonist who came up with the idea. Students were broken into small groups and given a board on which they had to build a simple machine which would get a marble from one side to the other. At the end all of the boards were moved together to create a giant Rube Goldberg machine to get the marble from the front to the back of the classroom.

The second half of the day was spent exploring the MOTAT exhibitions, completing a scavenger hunt, and going for a ride on the tram. The students had a great time checking out all of the different advances in technology, but a couple of big favourites were the trampoline game and the video game area. The man running the tram gave us a little tutorial about how the tram works, so now we know what type of technology is running the tram when we go for a ride.

Year 8 Girls Self Defence programme Over the last week we have had an instructor from The Women’s Self Defence Network — Wāhine Toa come into Pasadena and teach the Year 8 girls effective skills and strategies that will help keep them safe. The students were taught how to demonstrate and apply a range of techniques (physical, verbal, mental) to ensure their own safety and the safety of others.

Tongan Language Week Malo e lelei Kainga Ofeina. Tongan language week was an amazing week at Pasadena. All our students embraced the culture, learning new Tongan words every day and being introduced to Tonga’s most famous celebrities. OnWednesday we were able to provide Chop Suey and rice for everyone to enjoy. “Mate ma’a Tonga” ended the week with a mufti day on Friday where the kids all dressed up in red or Tongan attire.

School Uniform Our school uniform promotes our school identity and sense of community. It also helps to project a positive image about Pasadena Intermediate to the public. We expect our students to wear the correct uniform every day. If due to exceptional circumstances, a student is unable to wear the correct uniform, they are required to bring a signed note from their parent or caregiver to Miss Pretorius. They will then be given a uniform pass for a period of tie so the situation can be resolved. Thank you for your support with this.

Last week was Māori Language Week, on top of the large number of ways we already promote te reo Māori throughout the school, we organised other engaging activities to further our understanding of te reo, and te ao Māori.

E rua ngā rōpū i whakangungua ki ngā mahi whai. Ko tā rātou he whakapuaki i ngā hītori mō tēnei mea te whai, he whakaatu i ētahi āhua, he whakaako hoki i ngā tamariki katoa o ia akomanga puta noa i te kura. Two groups from the Rumaki unit facilitated whai (Māori string games) workshops. Each group started off with a presentation to explain the history and purpose of whai, moved on to a demonstration and taught whai figures to each student in every class in the school.

Each day we had Quizizz running in every class about different aspects of te reo Māori. In our assembly we had a school-wide battle to see which class had learned the most over the course of the week. Congratulations to Room 11 who took out 1st place, to Room 5 who came 2nd, and to Room 3 who came 3rd.

Gifted and Talented Writing Emma Gonzalez - Gun Control Activist Emma Gonzalez, a twenty year old girl, is a famous American gun control activist. She was one of the survivors of the 2018 Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida. The shooting resulted in 17 people losing their lives and several others getting severely injured. In response to the shooting, Emma helped to co-found the gun control advocacy group ‘Never Again MSD’. Her fame rose higher and higher after her speech proclaiming the ‘We call B.S1’ slogan at a protest against gun violence and usage. Since then she has made several social media appearances and even organised the ‘March for our Lives’ nationwide protest march against guns, which became the largest student march in Amercian history. Glamour Magazine then introduced her as ‘the face of the Never Again Movement’ and ‘a recognisable icon’; while ‘The Washington Post’ called her ‘La nueva cara of Florida’ and also compared her to the profound, Jose Marti2. NBC News referred to her as ‘one of the most visible student activists to survive any American shootings’. On 17 February 2018, Emma delivered an 11 minute speech at a gun control rally in front of the Broward County Courthouse in Florida. Her speech was in protest to the fatal shootings in Stoneman Douglas High School, she had observed just three days before. Her speech went viral in no time at all, and featured ‘a call and response’. ‘We call B.S in response to the gun violence laws. According to The Washington Post, her speech became symbolic of the ‘new strain of furious advocacy’ that shot up immediately after the shootings. On Emma’s left wrist she wears a variety of different coloured bracelets and bands in memory of those who had fallen in the shooting in Parkland. The bands are full of bad memories but she can’t forget those she loved and cared for. Her life took an unexpected turn for the worst when 17 students, faculty members and teachers died in a mass shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School, Florida. Emma recalls that she had no idea what was going on and she was just attending a class and noticed the SWAT team and police swarming outside, yelling ‘CODE RED’. It wasn’t until a few days after the shooting that she discovered the full extent of the disaster, when she read an article in the Miami Herald and saw all the names of the students and staff who had died that day. Emma showed up to the interview photo shoot. If she was nervous, it didn't show. Afterwards someone remarked that for someone so unaccustomed to the spotlight, she seemed very comfortable in her own skin. “ I am.” Emma replied. After her speech, Emma Gonzalez finished with this final paragraph. They say no laws could have prevented the hundreds of senseless tragedies that have occurred. We call B.S. That us kids don't know what we're talking about, that we're too young to understand how the government works. We call B.S. ~ Emma Gonzalez, 2018.

Sports News AIMS 2019

Pasadena Intermediate sent a water polo team to the AIMS games in Tauranga the week of September 8th-13th, 2019. There were 31 water polo teams in the open division from all over New Zealand. The team was made up of 9 players from the Pasadena teams and included Zach rm 1, Otis rm 1, Madi rm 1, Lucas rm 1, Louie rm 8, Kenzie rm 4, Alex rm 3, Jackson rm 2, and Conal rm 12. The team travelled to our house in Pukehina on Sunday 8th September in preparation for our first game on Monday morning. We were in a pool with three other teams, all of which we played over the course of the first two days. Our first game was against St Heliers school and we came out on top, beating them 13-0. The second game of the day was a cold one against Cobham Intermediate, at an outdoor pool, which we also won with a score of 6-2. The next day we had our third and final game of our original pool against Mt Maunganui Intermediate, with a score of 3-8 for Pasadena. We made it into the top 16 teams and found out what our next three games would be! We played another cold one against Otumoetai Intermediate, with a score of 10-0 for Pasadena. We went into our Wednesday games undefeated, but we were up against some tough competition, another intermediate school from Auckland who had been undefeated this season. We started the day beating Churchill Park School 7-0, which moved us into the top 8 of the tournament. The final game on Wednesday was against Murrays Bay Intermediate, which was the undefeated school. After an intense game, the team managed a win with a close score of 3-4! Thursday started with a game against Saint Kentigern Boys' School (Remuera) in which we came out on top with a score of 4-6. Our final game of Thursday, the one that would determine whether we played for the gold medal or the bronze, was against John Paul College. We won 5-9 and earned a place in the gold medal final!! Friday morning we started the day by heading out to support Takapuna Normal Intermediate in their final game. Takapuna Normal had come out a number of times to support the Pasadena Water Polo team in their journey for gold, which was great since many other schools had other teams that were coming out to support their water polo teams. They came out to support us, so the team wanted to do the same for them. The water polo final took place at Baywave at 2:15, so after packing all of our things we headed to the pool to meet our coaches and all of the friends and family who came down to support us. We went into the final undefeated. The

team was nervous because we were up against Murray’s Bay Intermediate again, the team that had been undefeated until they played us on Wednesday. We thought they would probably be even more eager to beat us in this game than they were the first time! It was a tough game and we all played hard. Murray’s Bay just managed to beat us with a score of 3-2, but we still came home with a silver medal! It was a great time, the kids had a blast, played well, and most importantly worked together as a team inside and outside the pool. It was an awesome experience. Thank you to all the parents and family, particularly Nikki and Lisa, who spent the week with us, that supported us throughout the tournament and built us up a little cheering section. It was a fantastic week with a very successful end!
