Peter M. Beck became the Korea Representative for the San Francisco-based Asia Foundation in January 2012. He serves on the Korea Foundation’s Publications Board and the Korean American Educational Commission. Previously, he held fellowships at the Council on Foreign Relations, Stanford University and the East-West Center in Honolulu. He served as the executive director of the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea and opened the International Crisis Group’s Northeast Asia office in Seoul (2004 – 2007). He was also the Director of Research and Academic Affairs at the Korea Economic Institute in Washington, D.C (1997 – 2004).He has taught at American University, Georgetown University, the Naval Post Graduate School, Ewha Womans University, and Yonsei University. He has served as an advisor to the International Republican Institute and as a member of the Ministry of Unification’s Policy Advisory Committee. He has also been a columnist for Joongang Sunday, Donga Ilbo, Weekly Chosun, and The Korea Herald. He has published over 100 articles, including in Asian Survey, Encyclopedia Britannica, Foreign Policy, Mother Jones, Oxford Analytica, The Wall Street Journal, and Yale Global. He has also testified before Congress. He received his B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley, completed the Korean language program at Seoul National University, and conducted his graduate studies at U.C. Before joining the Jeju Peace Institute, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a foreign service officer. He was Director for Information Analysis at the Office of Foreign Policy and Director for Coordination and Research at the Institute for Foreign Affairs and National Security of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served at the Korean Embassies in Russia, Sweden, Romania and Croatia with various diplomatic ranks. His last position was Korean Ambassador to the Republic of Croatia.He graduated from the Department of International Relations at the Seoul National University with B.A. and M.A. degrees in Political Science. He also received M.A. in Political Science from Columbia University in New York and earned Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Miami in Florida, USA. HaYeon Chae is a researcher at the Chung-Ang University Foreign Studies Institute. She lectures on design theory at the Graduate School of Culture and Art, Daejin University. Besides she has given lectures at the Yong-in Songdam College, Seoul National University of Science & Technology, etc. From 2001 to 2003, she had served as a Chief at the department of contents design of the Kids Entertainment Ltd.Chae received her Ph.D degree from Chung-Ang University in 2010. Her doctor's thesis is “A Study of the Revival Movement of Confucian Culture and Confucian Cultural Industry in China”. From 1992 to 1998, and from 2002 to 2005, Dr. CHOI worked in the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA). When at KIDA, Dr. CHOI assumed various positions such as Chief Executive Officer, Task Force for Current Defense Issues, Director of International Arms Control Studies, and one of the editors of Korean Journal of Defense Analysis (KJDA). He has done researches on arms control, crisis/consequence management, North Korean military affairs, multilateral security cooperation, and the ROK-US security alliance. From 1998 to 2002, he served in National Security Council Secretariat as Senior Director for Policy Planning and Coordination. He was one of South Korean delegates to the Four-Party Talks. Tae Hyun Choi is a professor of public international law at Hanyang University School of Law and director of Hanyang Institute for Legal Research. He currently teaches international law, international criminal law, international humanitarian law, international dispute settlement law, international jurisdiction, and international law seminar in the law school. He received B.A.(1979) in Law from College of Law of Seoul National University, Master of Law(1984) in International Law and Ph. D.(1991) in International Law from Graduate School of Seoul National University. He also received LL.M. in American Law(2004) from Northwestern University School of Law and LL.M. in International Criminal Law Specialization(2005) from Leiden University in the Netherlands. He once served as deputy-director at International Legal Affairs Department of the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991 through 1992.Professor Choi is particularly an expert on the International Criminal Court (ICC). He has been a legal advisor of the Korean delegation to the U.N. Preparatory Committee since 1996, to the 1998 Diplomatic Conference in Rome, to the Preparatory Commission, and to the conferences of the Assembly of States Parties which has been held in the Hague and New York so far. On his overseas stints, Mr Tan served in the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo as First Secretary from 1995 to 1998 and in the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur as Counsellor from 2001 to 2002. He also served in the Singapore Embassy in Tokyo from 2002 to 2005 as Counsellor, and subsequently as Acting Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission. Mr. Dal-ho Chung received his MA. in International Politics from New York University. He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), R.O.K in 1977 and retired from the Foreign Service in 2009. During his diplomatic career in Foreign Service, he served as an ambassador in Panama and Egypt. He is the Executive Director of UNITAR Jeju International Traing Center and the Chairman of Foreign Advisory Committee of Jeju Special Self-governing Province.

Before moving to Seoul, John taught Chinese history and politics at Brown, Columbia, and Peking Universities, and was associate director of the Center on US-China Relations at the Asia Society in New York. He is a senior fellow of the Asia Society US-China Center, term member of the Council of Foreign Relations, member of the National Committee on North Korea, and sits on the 21st Century Leadership Council of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy. His major footprints as a public official include serving as a chief of Korea Immigration Service (KIS) local branch offices (2000-2002), Consul of Korean Consulate of Osaka (2003-2006), and a head of Immigration Planning Division at KIS HQs (2009-2010). From 2010-2011, he worked as the chief of Korean Immigration Service in Incheon International Airport. Under his leadership, Incheon International Airport continued to rank first on the Airport Service Quality Assessment, which was conducted by Airports Council International.He is now Deputy Director of Migration Research and Training Centre, which conducts research on migration policy issues, educates central government and local officials on migration policy, and builds networks with migration-related institutions.

He led the party to victory in the August 2009 general election, defeating the long-governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Mr. Yoshito Hori established GLOBIS Management School in 1992 and GLOBIS Capital Partners in 1996. President Huh was born in Jeju in 1955. He attended the Department of Tourism Management at Jeju National University and proceeded to obtain his master’s in Tourism Management at Kyunghee University, and his doctorate from Sejong University in Business Administration. He became a tenured lecturer in March of 1984 at the Department of Tourism Management of Jeju National University. In 2004, he was appointed the Dean of the College of Economics and went on to become elected as the president of Jeju National University in February of 2011. He put forward the catch phrase of ‘New Leaders in the Glocal Era, Elite University which seeks Innovation’ as the future vision for the university. In order to achieve this goal, he has actively sought the 6 strategies for enhancement as well as other specific plans that come under them. His other activities included working as the vice president for the Korea Tourism Society, chairman for the Jeju Innovative Association, as well as the director of the Jeju Development Institute. As of the year 2013, he is currently active as one of the board members as well as the committee member for university entrance screening process for the Korea Council for University Education.

Taesun Kang, CEO of BLACK YAK and one of the most successful businessmen from Jeju Island, has special love for his hometown, saying Mt. Halla in Jeju brought him up. He thinks Mt. Halla taught him everything about mountaineering and took him to the Him alayas. He began climbing mountains with Korean climber Honggil Eum and Youngkil Hong in early 1970’s. He also led the 2010 Annapurna expedition team with Ms. Eunsun Oh, the first woman climber to summit 14 8,000ers in 2010. According to him, mountaineering and business have a lot in common. He keeps challenging himself to find a best way to be a global top company as he learns life from mountains. He won the “Moran Medal” and “Jeju Culture Award” in 2012. He is also the author of “Summit in my heart” and “Keep challenging today.”

Eel-Hwan Kim received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Chung-Ang University, Seoul, Korea, in 1985, 1987 and 1991, respectively. He was a Visiting Scholar at the Ohio State University in 1995 and University of Washington in 2004. He is currently a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Jeju National University. His research activities are in the area of power electronics and control, which includes the drive system, renewable energy control applications, and power quality.

He studied English language in the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. He obtained a business master degree in the Seoul National University, and Ph.D in the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. First, he worked as research manager in the Korea Development Bank. After that, he worked as chief researcher in the Ssangyong Research Institute and as associate research fellow in the Korea Institute of Finance. Since 1995, he worked as professor in the Chung-Ang University, and now he serves as member of Chung-Ang University Council and as visiting research fellow in the Samsung Economic Research Institute.

1. Dr. Nam-Kook Kim is a Jean Monnet Chair Professor in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Korea University. He studied at Seoul National University, Korea and the University of Oxford, UK, and received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago, USA. His research concern is philosophical interpretation of public policy in the areas of citizenship, human rights and multiculturalism in Europe and Asia. He was the winner of the Best Article Award in 2011 from Korea Political Science Association as well as Korean Society for Contemporary European Studies. He served as the Editor in Chief for Korean Political Science Review during 2010-2012. His publication includes articles such as “Citizen and Borders,” “Cultural Survival and Universal Human Rights,” and “European Experiences for East Asian Integration,” and books such as Multicultural Challenges and Redefining Identity in East Asia (2013), Deliberative Multiculturalism in Britain (2011), and Globalization and Regional Integration in Europe and Asia (2009). 2. Sung Eun Kim is Professor of Business Administration at Kyunghee University, Seoul, Korea since 2003. I am a professor of Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, The University of Tokyo, and also a director of the Center for Contemporary Korean Studies. I have studied IR at the University of Tokyo and Korean politics at Korea University, and completed in 1992 my Ph.D. dissertation about the political process how the ROK government had chosen the export-led industrialization strategy in the early 1960s, which was submitted at Korea University. Then I have developed my study focusing on the Korea-Japan normalization and ROK military involvement in the Vietnam War, and now I am studying the impacts of the détente in the 1970s, such as the US-China rapprochement and the China-Japan normalization, on the Korean peninsula. My field of research is the international and area studies of the contemporary Korea focusing on the South Korean diplomacy. My main publications are ROK – Its Dynamism of Democratization and Economic Development, and Korean Contemporary History in the World Politics,(both in Japanese), Pak ChⅡnghⅡi chⅡngbu Ⅱi sⅡnt’aek: 1960 nyⅡndae such’ul chihyang hyⅡng kongⅡphwa wa naengjⅡn ch’eje, (in Korean), and Reassessing the Park Chung Hee Era, 1961-1979: Development, Political Thought, Democracy, and Cultural Influence, (coauthor in English).

Kim is a graduate of Korea University’s Graduate School and holds a master’s degree in international business. Kim worked for Korea Energy Economic Institute for 2 years as a researcher focusing on Korean energy policy studies. Koo JaRyong(49) is an Assistant Editor, Foreign Desk of The Donga-ilbo(Donga Daily News). He graduated from Seoul National University, a master's degree in International Politics. He joined Donga-ilbo in 1991, having covered various fields including energy, environment, economy etc . Especial ly he worked in Beij ing as a special correspondent from 2008 to 2011. He is recently interested in topics concerning exchanges and cooperations between Korea's and China's regional governments.

Mr. Koh received his Ph.D. from Pusan National University in hydrogeology in 1997, and while working as a professional in public service for 20 years in the area of Jeju groundwater, he successfully established the first basic regulations in Jeju regarding groundwater management and completed projects on regional waterworks construction and general development plans for water resources. For six months, from August 2000 to February 2001, Mr. Koh was dispatched as a researcher to the waterworks department of Honolulu, Hawaii, and taking Hawaii’s advanced groundwater management law as a model, he established Jeju’s groundwater management law.Through his focused academic research in ‘Jeju geology and groundwater’, Mr. Koh has also given 34 papers, 64 conference presentations, 18 academic reports, and 20 contributions to academic research institute collections, for a total of approximately 140 academic contributions and publications.

Kyungmook Lee is Professor of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management at the Graduate School of Business, Seoul National University where he currently serves as a director of the Research Institute of Industrial Relations. His current research is concerned with the management of Korean companies and Confucian leadership. His earlier research has focused on the social capital of organizations and institutional changes. His research has been published at the Academy of Management Journal, the Strategic Management Journal, Long Range Planning, and the Harvard Business Review.His work on the institutional changes of large American law firms won the award for the best paper published in the Academy of Management Journal in 2002. His work on Confucian leadership won the Baekbum Leadership Research Award for the best paper published in Leadership Research in 2005. He was selected as the Professor of the Year in 2003 by the Alumni Association of the College of Commerce, Seoul National University.

Head of Department Sung-ho Lee is responsible for the development of the Jeju Global Education City, which aims to provide quality education to learners in Korea and Asia with a vision to become an educational hub in Northeast Asia. His responsibilities include inducing K-12 schools, colleges and universities as well as investment in the urban development project.

Seung Jong Lee is a professor at the Graduate School of Public Administration, Seoul National University and president of the Korea Research Institute for Local Administration. Previously, he served as the president of the Korean Association for Public Administration and chief editor of major academic journals in related fields. He has frequently advised local and national governments through such positions as chairman of the National Evaluation Committee of Local Governments, vice chairman of the Presidential Committee on Local Administration Reorganization, and a member of the Presidential Transition Committee. He has not only done extensive research on citizen participation and local autonomy, but also has been a strong advocate and educator in the field. He is the author of Theories of Local Autonomy, and Democratic Politics and Citizen Participation.

Sunny Seong-hyon Lee is director of the China Research Center at South Korea’s English daily, the Korea Times. He is a graduate of Harvard University, and Tsinghua University, where he completed his Ph.D. in international communication. For 2012-2013, he is a James A. Kelly non-resident Fellow of the Pacific Forum CSIS. He is also Korea Foundation-Salzburg Fellow for 2013. His interests include China’s public diplomacy, the role of Social Networking Services (SNS) in Chinese society, and China’s soft power in China’s neighboring countries. He is a frequent commentator on China-Korea relations as well as on North Korea in Chinese newspapers and TV. He taught at the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change in Austria, gave talks at Harvard Kennedy School, Stanford University Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, the Confucius Institute, Seoul National University Graduate School of International Relations, and the Korea Economic Institute in Washington DC. In 2010 and 2012, he gave training to the Korea Journalists’ Association delegation, who wanted to specialize in China. He can be reached at [email protected].

LEE, Sun-Hwa is a council member of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Council. She holds a master’s degree in Storytelling from the Graduate school of Social Education at Jeju National University. Before joining the Jeju provincial council, she worked as a production manager for Jeju MBC; as a production director at Arirang World Cannel; and also at the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family as a policy consultant. As well as this experience, she has a great passion for the progress of foreign residents’ status and the process of globalization on Jeju.Due to this interest, she is currently working as a chairperson on the Special Committee for women, as well as a member of the Culture & Tourism Committee and the Special Committee for Budget & Accounts of Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Council. She has been endeavoring to support the foreign residents in Jeju, as a member of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Foreign Advisory Committee.

Dr. Chang Jae Lee is currently a visiting fellow at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP). He served as vice president, director of the Center for International Development Cooperation, and a senior fellow at KIEP. He was a member of the Joint Expert Group for Feasibility Study on an East Asia FTA, which was set up on the decision of the ASEAN +3 Economic Ministers in 2004, before assuming the chairmanship of the EAFTA Phase II Study from May 2007 to August 2009. He has also been a member of the Track Two Study Group for Comprehensive Economic Partnership in East Asia (CEPEA) for 2007-2009. He graduated from the University of Paris I (PANTHEON-SORBONNE) and completed his Ph.D. in economics at the University of Paris I.

Matteo Legrenzi is Associate Professor and Chair in International Relations and Gulf Studies at the School of International Relations of Ca’ Foscari University of Venice. He holds a D.Phil. in International Relations and an M.Phil. in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from St. Antony's College, Oxford University, where he remains a Senior Associate Member. In Oxford he is also Senior Research Associate at the Centre for International Studies of the Department of Politics and International Relations. He studied Arabic at the American University in Cairo. He published numerous articles and book chapters on the Arab monarchies and the international relations of the Gulf as well as writing a column on Middle East politics for the Italian journal "Il Mulino". He wrote two monographs "The GCC and the International Relations of the Gulf: Diplomacy, Security and Economic Coordination in a Changing Middle East" for I.B. Tauris and “Cognitive Analysis of Decisionmaking: The Case of Israel in the October 1973 Conflict” for Vita e Pensiero (Milan Catholic University Press). He also edited three volumes "Beyond Regionalism? Regional Cooperation, Regionalism and Regionalization in the Middle East" and "Shifting Geo-Economic Power of the Gulf: Oil, Finance and Institutions" for Ashgate Publishers and "Gulf Security: Legacies of the Past, Prospects for the future" for Routledge. Before returning to Venice, his hometown, he taught in Oxford, Ottawa and Seoul winning the Capital Educators' Award in 2009 in Canada. He deals with international relations and comparative government of the Middle East, in particular the political economy, regionalism and security of the Arab monarchies of the Gulf, and the Northeast Asia security complex.

LIGUO LI is the Secretary General of China International Friendship Cities Association, the Director of Friendship City Department of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC). After he serves the Secretary General, he initiated office automation system, website and journals on friendship-city works in China and successfully held China International Friendship Cities Conference in the year of 2008 , 2010 and 2012 respectively. He graduated from Luoyang PLA University of Foreign Language and then served as a translator of Major rank in the General Staff Department of the PLA. He has long been engaged in translation and revision of works on international politics, economy, diplomacy, society and education, etc., which total more than 5 million words. These works mainly include Translation Skills in Diplomatic Articles in Japanese, Economics Dictionary in Japanese, English and Chinese, Mayumi’s World, and Education Mystery of Zero-year-old Children, etc. He served as the Deputy Director of Cultural Exchange Department of CPAFFC, and has long been engaged in cultural exchanges with other countries by dispatching Chinese art troupes or hosting cultural groups or individuals on their friendly visits, organizing performances, exhibitions, films and television shows given by Chinese and overseas organizations.He is fond of writing poems. Satu Limaye was named Director of the East-West Center in Washington in February 2007. He is also a Senior Advisor at the Center for Naval Analyses Corporation (CNAC). He is Founding Editor of the Asia-Pacific Bulletin series, an editor of the journal Global Asia and on the international advisory council of the journal Contemporary Southeast Asia. Dr. Limaye publishes and speaks on U.S.-Asia relations and is a reviewer for numerous publications, foundations and fellowship programs. From October 2005 to February 2007 he was a Research Staff Member of the Strategy and Resources Division at the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA) and from July 1998 to October 2005 Director of Research and Publications at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies (APCSS), a direct reporting unit of U.S. Pacific Command. He has been an Abe Fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy and a Henry Luce Scholar and Research Fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) in Tokyo. He is a magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Georgetown University and received his doctorate from Oxford University (Magdalen College) where he was a George C. Marshall Scholar.

Wonhyuk Lim is Director of Global Economy Research at the Korea Development Institute (KDI). Since he joined KDI in 1996, his research has focused on state-owned enterprises and family-based business groups (chaebol). He has also written extensively on development issues, in conjunction with policy consultation projects under Korea’s Knowledge Sharing Program (KSP). He received a Presidential order from the Dominican Republic for his work. After the 2002 Presidential Election in Korea, he worked for the Presidential Transition Committee and the Presidential Committee on Northeast Asia and helped to set policy directions for the restructuring of the electricity and gas sector and for Northeast Asian energy cooperation. Dr. Lim was also at Brookings as a CNAPS Fellow for 2005-06, and worked as a consultant for the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI). In 2010, he helped to formulate the G20 Seoul Development Consensus for Shared Growth. His recent publications include Korea's Global Leadership (Kyobo, 2012, ed., in Korean), “Chaebol and Industrial Policy in Korea” (Asian Economic Policy Review, 2012), “Joint Discovery and Upgrading of Comparative Advantage: Lessons from Korea’s Development Experience” (World Bank, 2011) and Global Leadership in Transition: Making the G20 More Effective and Responsive (Brookings and KDI, 2011, co-edited with Colin Bradford). He received a B.A.S. in Physics and History and a Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.

Dr. Bo Liu, obtained B.A. in 1999 and M.A. in 2002 in Chinese painting from Nankai University, got his Ph.D. in art history from Nankai University in 2005. During ten years’ study at Nankai University, Dr. Liu dabbled in many aspects, such as literature, history, art, etc., and had well understanding and experiences for the western arts and humanities. He has published more than 50 papers including the theory of art, poetry and prose language, published more than ten books.Since 2005, Dr. Liu was working as a full-time painter in Chinese National Academy of Art. He has visited many galleries, museums and historical sites in China and abroad. While comparison of Chinese and Western art, Dr. Liu enriches his artistic creation, also accumulated a lot of valuable pictures and research findings. And this study can complement of Chinese and foreign art history. Dr. Liu is an outstanding representative of modern Chinese young artist. He is a member of the Chinese Artists Association, a member of the China Youth Federation, and the vice president of the Youth Federation of the Ministry of Culture of China. Based on integration of Chinese and Western classical painting, his art displays a unique personal experience to the nature, maintaining the traditional Chinese painting’s technique. At the same time, his art’s creation highlights the modern aesthetic. Dr. Liu has been invited to give a lecture in the Israeli Asia Studies Conference in 2010 in Haifa University, to give a lecture in the World Chinese Collectors Convention in Shanghai in 2010 and in Taipei in 2012. And in recent years, during visiting abroad, Dr. Liu gave lectures and held painting-exhibitions in UK, France, Canada, Israel, Russia, Japan, South Korea and other countries.
