Du meine Seele, du mein Herz50 Solo Songs for Special OccasionsEdited by Roland Erben

That life’s big ceremonial occasions – whether joyful or sorrowful – are so moving and make such a memorable impression is due in no small part to the music performed at them. This album contains a wide selection of solo songs for voice and piano (or organ) suitable for ceremonies such as baptisms, weddings and anniversaries, confirmations and first communions, memorial services and funerals. Many of the songs can also be used for formal, secular, occasions – for example, company anniversaries and celebrations.

Only a few of the 50 songs in this collection were specifically composed for such ceremonies but many have, over the years, earned their place in the standard repertoire. This collection also includes a number of less familiar songs, and works that have not before been published in their present form. The selection covers a wide range of styles, extending from the Baroque to the 21st century. Most of the German-language songs include English singing translations.

Gabriel Fauré – Vocalises45 Vocalises for Voice and PianoEdited by Roy Howat and Emily Kilpatrick

When Gabriel Fauré was appointed Director of the Paris Conservatoire in 1905, one of his most pressing concerns – and first achievements – was a complete reform of the teaching of singing. He was determined to steer the singing courses away from a long-entrenched obsession with second-rate grand opera (Auber, Halévy and the like), and to introduce mandatory study of art song, along with “exercises developing vocal suppleness, articulation and voice placement and production, which are the basis of singing teaching”. To this end, between 1906 and 1916 he composed a substantial body of accompanied vocalises for use in the Conservatoire’s sight-singing examinations. For a century these vocalises – all but one now held in the Archives nationales de France in Paris – have lain unknown to the musical world at large. Their first publication here marks a major event for the vocal teaching repertoire (as well as some entrancing music); a marvellous resource of skilfully devised vocal exercises ranging from elementary to advanced virtuoso level, all from one of history’s greatest song composers. – Roy Howat

“Fauré’s vocalises offer singers an incomparable gateway into his very personal and specific vocal art, quite independent of poetic texts, yet stylistically instantly recognizable”

Sandra Milliken – Death of a Giant7 Songs for Voice and Piano

I have experienced forests in England, Canada, Norway, Australia and New Zealand; walked at midnight in Finland through a grove of spruce and birch to hear the nightingales sing, and taken trails to see the magnificent sequoia giants in the United States of America. A great sense of tranquillity and awe descends when in the presence of such beauty and aged immensity. After recovering from this first impression from above, looking down reveals a microcosm of extraordinary living detail – intricate forests of mosses, lichens, flowering plants and fungi among the carpet of decaying leaves.

When I first discovered the poem Death of a Giant, I was brought back once again into this world. The poems chosen for this set of seven songs draw upon the stories and timeless nature of the forest in its many forms. From the canopy to the floor, from the sunlight to the shadow, from the immense to the intricate, explore in details the marriage of the text and music to gain an understanding and appreciation of art song. – Sandra Milliken

Forests are life itself: Natural wonders on a grand scale that yet encapsulate the miniature. Some grow where we dare not go; Some grow where others have been before. Cool, temperate forests, moisture-laden mosses and ferns; Steamy, humid rainforests of epiphytic awe; Northern forests of pine and birch; Southern forests of eucalypts and wattle. Those that enjoy great richness and those that struggle to reach the sun. Forests are life unto themselves.

Sandra Milliken studied at the Universities of New England and Queensland, and has won numerous awards for her achievements in choral singing and conducting. She has worked with many international choral conductors and composers. Milliken is the Artistic Director of the Queensland Youth Choir and the musical director / conductor of The Bayside Divas, the Blackstone Ipswich Cambrian Choir and Cannon Hill Anglican College junior choirs. Her works have been commissioned, performed and recorded all around the world. Milliken has developed the concept and composed the music for Edition Peters’ Choral Vivace series, which includes At the Milonga, The Ornamental Cat, and the Missa Semplice.

Henry Purcell – Dido’s LamentThree Keys in One EditionSeries Edited by Gordon Stewart

A survivor of the war waged by the Greeks, the Trojan prince Aeneas appears in Homer’s epic poem, the Iliad, and is the hero of Vergil’s Aeneid – the basis of Nahum Tate’s libretto for Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas. In the aftermath of the destruction of Troy, Aeneas escapes across the Mediterranean to Carthage, the great Phoenician city built around the eighth century BC, and ruled by Dido as its queen. He and Dido fall in love, but Aeneas is destined to be the founder of the city of Rome and is obliged to travel onwards; however, Dido is unable to face life without him. Purcell gives Dido this lament – an intimate and conclusive disclosure – as she reveals to her sister, the handmaiden Belinda, her approaching death. – Gordon Stewart

30 Italian Songs and Ariasfrom the 17th and 18th CenturiesSelected and Edited by Roger Nichols

Italian songs and arias of the 17th and 18th centuries have for many years been essential repertoire for anyone learning to sing. But this music is principally known in romantic adaptations which the original composers would barely recognize. This new collection of 30 songs and arias (based on the “standard 24”, together with other pieces typical of the Italian style) recreates the clearer and cleaner – and easier to play – accompaniment style of the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition to authentic editions of the music, the book contains invaluable information which will help singers interpret and perform this repertoire:

• Word-by-wordtranslations(Italian–English)oftheoriginaltext

• Englishsingingtranslations

• IPAtransliterationsoftheItaliantext

• Historicalnotesabouteachsong

A CD, containing recordings of the piano accompaniments, is included with the book.

“I am delighted to see Parisotti’s ubiquitous anthology recast with such learned courtesy. Roger Nichols has shed all outdated features, adding instead invaluable information and suggestions; this choice of pieces celebrates even better the genius of Italian baroque song, and I hope to see it used everywhere!”
