We are excited to introduce our new trainee, Jim Kolan,
who joined the Centre on August 6. Jim arrived in Perth
from the United States just two weeks ago and moved into
the Walpole area with his wife Nana and their two boys just a few days before starting work.
Jim’s connection with Walpole is through his wife whose
father lived in the area for 30 years before moving
recently to Perth.
Jim is originally from Pittsburgh, PA (home of the six-
time Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers) and lived
in the Perth area for seven years before a sojourn back in
the States working for a human resource consulting firm.

Whale Disentanglement
It’s very unusual for a whale that we have disentangled to be re-sighted, but we are happy to report that a 9m
humpback whale we worked on last week near Albany
has been spotted near Augusta- and even better, it is
now completely free of rope!
Amazingly, the whale has been spotted by Whale
Watch Western Australianear Augusta with no sign of
the embedded rope. Continued on page 4...

We welcome your opinion Letters to the editor...
Hi Walpole,
This is a wee missive in response to, a story 24th July by Glenda Grigg, on her fathers (unnecessary) pain
full demise, well done Glenda.
Jacqueline my daughter, is instrumental in making
put together this email , on the hope of maybe saving others such trauma.
This email is for like minded people, like Glenda’s
dad and persons who want to control their own
demise.
The book that gave me so much peace of mind, and
put squarely in my hands control of where and
when, “I” decide to shuffle off this mortal coil etc.
To put it plainly, the author takes you step by step on
how to end ones life, painlessly and pleasantly, and it
does not cost a fortune. Also it has a comprehensive
data on what methods not to use, and the dangers
therein.
When I said it gave me peace of mind, that is an
understatement , it was more akin to me winning the
lotto and giving me a F.U. fund against the” Holy
Wullies “of this world.
The book I recommend to like minded people is
( Five Last Acts 11 expanded, revised 2015 ) By
Chris Docker.
I would feel so selfish if I did not share my good fortune on finding this book ,with like minded folk.
One can get a copy of this gem , on the internet with
any reputable book company.
Ps. If you are wondering what Holy Wullies
are, Google it under the name of the famous Poet Robert Burns.

Looking Back…….with Molly
(continuing the story of Sister Jane Anderson)
In June 1932, Sister Jane Anderson closed the door
of the Church of England Mission House in
Hazelvale for the last time in preparation for the
move to Nornalup to establish a Cottage Hospital.
Deaconess Fleck had moved to Sydney and was
replaced by Sister Bazett. A Nornalup resident generously made a house available for the Sisters
and the Cottage Hospital was officially opened in
July 1932.
Here the Sisters' care covered a wide spectrum
including accident cases from timber camps, new babies, tonsilitis, and at one time an isolation ward
was set up for the treatment of diphtheria. The
Sisters depended greatly on the doctor in Nornalup at
the time.
Doctor Burnside also operated a dairy farm in the
district and often attended urgent cases still clad in
his overalls and rubber boots!
Long hours and constant work took their toll and
finally ill health forced the two Sisters to return to
Ireland in May 1934. The eventual parting was sad
for all concerned.
Years later the district showed its love, respect and
appreciation for Sister Anderson by having her name
included on the Pioneer Womens Roll of Honour in
Kings Park and the bell installed in the tower in
Walpole in 2014 bears her name. Note: A more detailed account of the Mission House
and the Cottage Hospital is with the Walpole
Nornalup and Districts Historical Association.(ie.
Including names and treatment of settlement
pioneers at the little Hospital.)
Just prior to compiling the article in 1980, I wrote to
Sister Anderson for information and in her reply to my letter she said she had only just
destroyed her records of births at the Cottage
Hospital.
I was just a little too late for that gem of
information…….
The photo is mine and shows (left to right) Sister Anderson, Sister Bazett and an assistant Peggy
Voce. In the background is a patient.

Languages of Love Workshop Holly Beek from Relationships Australia came to Walpole CRC on Tuesday 6th August and delivered a great workshop on the languages of love to our small community. The workshop talked about the different love languages we have so that we can understand ourselves and our children at a deeper level. This helps us meet our children’s emotional needs in practical ways. It develops and improves our emotional connection and communication with our children and other significant relationships. Holly had amazing feedback from the course participants as they all enjoyed the relaxed and open environment and how the subject was talked about in a practical way with real experiences used. Holly is hoping to come back soon with more exceptional seminars. Walpole CRC will keep you posted. ~Cherie Smith, Walpole Community Resource

Independent Office Established For Complaints about Health
Related Services The Health and
Disability
Services
Complaints
Office (HaDSCO) is an independent statutory authority providing
independent resolution services for complaints
relating to health, disability and mental health services
at no cost to the community. In a recent
teleconference at the Centre, HaDSCO provided an
overview of its functions.
The scope of HaDSCO’s authority includes public
services, private services, prison services and services
provided to involuntary patients. Most every type of
health service provider and service related to health
care are covered. Complaints may also be referred to and from HaDSCO and specialized medical boards.
Complaints may be made through HaDSCO’s enquiry
line, online, or preferably in writing via Post or email.
Complaints must generally be made within two years.
Common complaints include whether a service provider has acted unreasonably by
• Not delivering a service,
• Providing a service that should not have been provided,
• Delaying or denying access to records
• Breaching confidentiality,
• Charging an excessive fee, or
• In the manner of providing a service.
Complaints can be resolved through conciliation,
negotiated settlement, and occasionally investigation
of complaints. Other outcomes include further
explanation of the service, an apology, refunds or waiver of fees, a change in policy or procedure, or
counselling. The Office uses the information gathered
to educate and train health service providers in the
prevention and resolution of complaints.
In sum, individuals, their representatives, or other
health service providers are all encouraged to initiate
a complaint with HaDSCO if their provider has acted
unreasonably in providing or not providing a health
care service and the provider has not been proactive in
resolving the issue on their own.
Further information about HaDSCO, the types of
complaints it handles, and the process itself can be
found at https://www.hadsco.wa.gov.au.

Snail Tails What are little boys made of
What are little boys made of Slugs and snails and puppy dog tails
That’s what little boys are made of. A well known children’s nursery rhyme from the late 17th century - it appears that even back then my distant ancestors were well known. I bet they were just as much trouble then as we are now! If there is one thing we slimy creatures don’t like it’s being dry. So if a ring of dry matter is around your new seedlings we can’t get to them. Coffee grounds,
crushed eggshells, sawdust, wood ash, wheat bran
(dries us up inside), wool waste (shoddy) are just some of the things we hate. Diatomaceous earth, though not good for humans to breathe, is really effective. A shallow container set into the soil with beer in it is irresistible to us where we will drown in a drunken bliss. Copper strips placed around pot rims or seedlings give unpleasant sensations and we turn away.
We hide under large flat leaves, bricks and small planks raised slightly off the ground - anywhere that is cool and moist. I’ve heard of people going on snail hunts with their children and offering rewards for the most snails collected. Then, the nerve of them, they feed us to their chickens or ducks!
Snail pellets are very convenient to use but for the safety of all my other little friends (birds, lizards, etc) only ones that have iron phosphate as the active
ingredient should be used.
