Jazz RamblerAvailable Online

America’s Finest City DixielandJazz Society extends a special“Thanks” to all AFCDJS memberswho signed up to get their JazzRambler online! Online subscriptionswill help us cut high postage costs sowe can use that money for “The Music.”Remember, it’s not too late to changeto an “online” Jazz Ramblersubscription. If you would like toparticipate in this money-savingprogram, please email MyrnaGoodwin, the AFCDJS Secretary, [email protected].

I really like the opportunity to hearmy favorite traditional jazz bands overa five-day period. They are always attheir best when performing at a largefestival . The musicianship andarrangements are incredible. Withseven venues going at the same time,it is difficult to make a choice aboutwhich one to attend.

Sometimes seating is difficult, butif I sponsor a band I will havepreferred seating in all of the venues. It is great to be in the front row. It willbe easier to see my choices of pastfavorites and catch some of the newbands this year.

If I choose to attend the sponsorreception, I might see people I havemet at past Festivals. It is fun andinformative to discuss jazz festivals, jazz cruises, bands and musicians withold and new friends. Musicians attendthe reception. It is a great opportunityto tell them in person how much youenjoy their music. It is no surprisehow much the musicians value yoursponsorship.

I can decide in advance if I want tobe recognized by the band leader andthe sign on the stage as well as havingmy name in the program. Or, I couldchoose to be an anonymous sponsor.

For Festival #33 a new perk has

Why I Like Being a Band SponsorBy Jim McNaughton been added — sponsors will get free

parking at the Town and Country. In addition, I will feel good about

helping the Society preserve the musicand continue the Festival and JazzCamp. When I see the youth bandsperform and visit the JazzSea JamSess ions , I a lways have a newappreciation for the contributionAFCDJS makes to traditional jazz.

I know I will get my money’s worthfor my contribution. Guess what, partof it is tax deductible.

I have been a band sponsor formany years. If you are a sponsor Iknow you will recognize the manybenefits that come from sponsorship. If this is new to you and you areinterested, please contact me, JimMcNaughton, at 858-278-8823 [email protected]. Or, ifyou prefer, you may go to our website,http://www.dixielandjazzfestival.orgwhich will give you information onhow to become a sponsor.

Dickenson was one of the bestloved and respected jazz musicians, and even in his late sixties and earlyseventies he was able to produceperformances which mark him as oneof the most distinctive voices in jazzhistory. Trombonist Benny Mortononce described him as the “Will Rogersof the Trombone.” He said Dickensongets musicians laughing when heplays, yet even with a touch of humorhe says the most serious things.

SPRING (MAY) 2012

By Hal SmithThe next time you attend a jazz

festival, look for a young man wearinga cap who is making things happen onthe bandstand. He may be in the frontline playing trumpet, trombone orclarinet or possibly in the rhythmsection on banjo, guitar, string bass, tuba or d rums . L i s ten for anauthoritative and authentic sound onwhatever the man in the cap is playing, and you will have found CLINTBAKER.

Clint became a genuine jazzwunderkind, almost as soon as hebegan playing jazz as a teenager in the1980s. Over the years he has learnedto play all the instruments that areusually heard in Traditional Jazz andhas also become a much-respectedbandleader. Though his favorite style of musicis New Orleans Jazz, he is equallyadept at playing San Francisco,Chicago, Kansas City and Harlemstyles as well as Gypsy Jazz.

During the past decade, Clint hasworked with a variety of bands, playinga wide range of styles, including NewOrleans Rascals of Osaka, Climax JazzBand, Jim Cullum’s Jazz Band, HalSmi th’s Roadrunners , TomSharps teen’s Or landos , Bi l lBissonnette’s International Jazz Band,Leon Oakley’s Friends of Jazz Band,Reynolds Brothers Rhythm Rascalsand the Black Diamond Blue Five. Healso led Clint Baker’s New Orleans

Festival Profiles —The Highly Versatile and Talented Clint Baker

Jazz Band (which still performs forspecial occasions).

Cl in t ’ s p resen t -day mus ica lactivities are just as varied — trumpetwith the Grand Dominion Jazz Band;tuba with the Yerba Buena Stompers;string bass with Ray Skjelbred andhis Cubs; guitar (and sometimes bass)with Le Jazz Hot . He leads the CaféBorrone Al l -S ta rs — a t theestablishment of the same name inMenlo Park, California — and co-leadsthe New El Dorado Jazz Band. In bothcases , he i s ab le to p lay anyinstrument that is necessary for theperformance.

In add i t ion to h i s busyperformance schedule, Clint alsolectures on jazz history and since 1997he has been on the staff of the AFCDJSAdult Traditional Jazz Camp.

Clint lives in San Bruno, Californiawith his wife Alisa Clancy (a jazz radiohost) and their two children.

To borrow a phrase from ClintBaker himself, he is a “full-service”jazz musician…multi-instrumentalist,bandleader, educator and historian. When you hear Clint in person, besure to thank him for everything hedoes to promote and preserve the greattraditions in Classic Jazz!

By this time he had heard Dickie Wells, whom he admired greatly, ColemanHawkins, Buster Bailey, J immyHarrison, Benny Morton and ofcourse, Louis Armstrong.

After Webb, he worked with ZackWhite, a big name band of that day,who came to New York a few times toplay at the famed Savoy Ballroom. Viceventually drifted down to KansasCity to join a Bennie Moten unit wherehe met some K.C. boys who weren’twell known yet but were on their way

— Count Basie, Hot Lips Page andBuck Clayton.

In 1933 he was invited to joinBlanche Calloway’s band (Cab’ssister) and remained with her for threeyears before moving on to ClaudeHopkins’ band for another three years. In 1939 Benny Carter was forming abig band and Dickenson, who hadbuilt a solid reputation by that time, was asked to join it. But the K.C. boyswanted him too and the followingyear he became a member of the soon-to-be famous Count Basie Orchestra.

Vic had been busy recording withJabbo Smith, Benny Carter and other

bands and continued to cut recordswith Basie but he felt constrained inb ig bands , where he had fewopportunities to solo. In 1941 hehooked up with Sidney Bechet whohad a summer resort job in upstateNew York. In that band, HenryGoodwin was on trumpet.

Vic had found his rightful placenow, rounding the circle from kid-band to the big bands, and back toreal jazz again where he remained therest of his career.

After the summer job ended, hegigged around, joining Lips Page’s

By Len Levine

Trombonist Vic Dickenson, in acareer that spanned more than fivedecades, played and recorded some“serious jazz,” but he will perhaps bebest remembered for his droll, mockingtrombone style using the intrinsichumor of the slide trombone (and afull complement of mutes) to fullartistic effect.

Born in Xenia, Ohio in 1906, hebegan to pick out notes on an oldorgan in the parlor of his house. But

he had his eye on the trombone hisolder brother was studying, and whenhis brother tired of his lessons, Vichad the trombone and never let it go.

In high school he began to play ina school band and at 15, without anyformal music training, he played hisf i rs t paying job wi th the El i teSerenaders in Lebanon, Ohio. In 1922the family moved to Columbus, andVic and h i s b ro ther Car los , asaxophone player, began to job aroundColumbus.

He worked local gigs with RoyBrown’s band and then with DonPhillips and Leonard Gay in Madison,Wisc., where he taught himself to readmusic. In 1929 he joined Speed Webband his Hollywood Band whichincluded Teddy Wilson, Roy Eldridgeand Roy’s brother, Joe, on alto sax.
