Introduction

Jesus said, “Learn of me” (Matthew11:29). Learning of the Savior and histruths is an essential part of living hisgospel. Your efforts to search the scrip-tures daily will help you draw nearerto him, for “these are written, that yemight believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing yemight have life through his name”( John 20:31).

This study guide is divided into numbered sections that correspondwith the lessons in the New TestamentGospel Doctrine course. Each sectionprovides the week’s reading assign-ment and questions to enhance yourstudy. You may use the questions toimprove personal application of thescriptures, to prompt gospel-centereddiscussions among family members, and to prepare to make meaningfulcontributions to class discussions.

This study guide is a valuable resourcefor families. Each section contains asuggestion for an activity or discussionto add interest and variety to gospellearning in the home.

Also included in each section is a scrip-ture chain—a list of scripture passagesthat relate to the reading assignment. You may want to write these lists inthe back of your scriptures. You mayalso want to develop your own scrip-ture chains by selecting passages fromthe lists in the Topical Guide and theinformation in the Bible Dictionary. To highlight a scripture chain in your

scriptures, mark in your scriptures thefirst passage in the list. Beside that pas-sage write the reference for the secondpassage in the list. Turn to the secondpassage, mark it, and write the refer-ence for the third passage. Continueuntil you have marked the last passagein the list, and complete the chain bywriting next to that passage the refer-ence for the first passage. You will beable to use these scripture chains toquickly find scripture passages on agiven gospel principle.

An additional section at the end of the study guide contains statementsby latter-day prophets on the blessingsof scripture study.

You share with your Gospel Doctrineteacher the responsibility to help theclass be successful. The Lord has saidthat teachers need to “preach . . . bythe Spirit of truth” and that thosewho receive “the word of truth” should“receive it by the Spirit of truth” (D&C50:17, 19). Come to class prepared tocontribute insights, ask questions, share experiences, bear testimony, andlisten attentively to the teacher andthe other class members. When youhave studied the reading assignmentand pondered the questions in thisstudy guide, you will be better pre-pared to experience the fulfillment ofthe Lord’s words when he said, “He thatpreacheth and he that receiveth, under-stand one another, and both are edifiedand rejoice together” (D&C 50:22).
