Dear Booker T. Washington Family,

2

I have been teaching at BTW for 11 years, 8 of them as an IB teacher. I hold a bachelor’s degree in history from the Uni-versity of Virginia and a Master’s Degree in International Af-fairs from The George Washington University. I am married to Krista Waldron, also a teacher. We have one son, Van Baxter.

I was born and raised in New Jersey, the 8th of 9 children. I spent most of the 1990s in Washington, DC, where I hoped to join the US Foreign Service. I came to Tulsa on a temporary basis in 1999 and never left. Booker T. students, staff and par-ents became like a second family to me, for which I will always be grateful.

I currently teach IBSL World History, IBHL History of Europe and the Middle East, IBHL History of South and East Asia, Ancient and Medieval History, and AP Comparative Gov-ernment. I coach the Model United Nations team and am one of our delegates for the Tulsa Classroom Teachers’ Association. I love Booker T. because it is a place that values excellence, ap-preciation for diversity and intellectual freedom.

I became interested in researching the history of Booker T. Washington High School because I was looking for common ground. BTW is a big school full of talented people with differ-ent ideas about the school’s identity. Sometimes these differenc-es are a source of rancor. But I believe that the history, heritage and traditions of the school, before and after 1973, can be a powerful force for unity. We should all be proud of the school’s entire history, because there are a long line of great educators behind us. They created the school - we only inherited it. If we can all learn to value the achievements of those who came be-fore us, than we can come together and work together better as faculty, staff, students and parents. The BTW Orchestra

New Payment System Brings Online Convenience to TPS Parents

Tulsa Public Schools is now offering an online payment processing system, PaySchools, to allow parents easy and con-venient online access to purchase and pay for student meals, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Parents can obtain information on the system and step by step instruction on setting up an account by visiting the District’s Web site, www.tulsaschools.org, and clicking on the PaySchools link. Account payments can be made with an e-check or credit card, and, to ensure your security, PaySchools does not store personal bank or credit card information.

If additional assistance is required, parents may contact [email protected], and their questions will be an-swered promptly.

Counselors’ CornerOctober has been a very busy month with PSAT testing,

homecoming, progress reports, parent-teacher conferences, and Power School access for parents.

power School accessPower School is the program that TPS has that will al-

low a parent to access the grades and attendance of their child. Parents were mailed the online access code at the end of September. If you did not receive one for your student, you need to make sure that the school has the proper ad-dress, including apartment numbers and zip code. Contact the registrar, Mrs. Dougless, at [email protected] or call her at 925-1019 to update phone numbers and ad-dress. A parent can use any computer with internet access to access their student’s grades and attendance.

Counselors can email you the Power School code and ID for your child or you can come to the counseling office to have a printout of one. (We cannot give the printout to the student to give to you.)

(Email addresses for counselors are listed below.)

tips for power School:

n Click on the teacher’s name to email the teacher directly;

n Click on the letter/number grade for each class to see a de-tailed list of assignments from that teacher;

n Attendance is also available to view, including tardies;

n And parents without internet access can come to the school media center on Tuesdays from 3:20 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. to access their student’s account.

Pennies for Pizza NHS is having is annual Pennies for Pizza campaign

to raise money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. A competition among all 1st hour teachers will begin on Monday, November 9 through Friday, December 4.

All 1st hour teachers will be collecting money in the form of coins or bills during their 1st hours. Money will be collected every Friday with an updated tally provided the following Mondays.

The conclusion of the campaign will end with the annual Faculty/Senior basketball game on Friday, De-cember 4.

For more information, contact Coach Factor.

Coats for Kids drive The Class of 2011 will kick off their Coats for Kids drive

on Oct. 30th, and it will last until Nov. 20th. We will be col-lecting new or gently used children’s coats. Additionally, though adult coats are accepted (for those youth who are older), there is a great need for smaller coats for younger children.

Parents and students will find large, labeled boxes stationed on the first floor (main office) and the third floor (room 314) where the students can deposit their donations. Please make sure all donations are clean.

Oklahoma winters can get cold and it is important that our community aid disadvantaged children by helping to provide much needed protection from the harsh elements. Therefore, we look forward to all of Booker T. Washington’s participation in this important event.

Additionally, community service credit will be given for each donation. So for each coat donated to the Coats for Kids drive, students will receive an hour (1 hour) of community service credit. For 2 or more coats donated, 2 hours of community ser-vice will be given. (The maximum community service hours will be 2.) Students should simply stop by their class sponsor’s room with the donated item, and get a form signed acknowledging the donation before putting it in one of the boxes. Sophomores: You need to take your donations to Ms. Asad-Pratt’s room, get her signature, then write a reflection about this experience to turn in to your class sponsor, Coach Fisher, before you can receive your community service hours.

Your kids have joined and paid their dues, are talking about how fun it is; and, all the while, you’re thinking they’ve taken up a new metal-working hobby. But, despite what its name suggests, KEY CLUB is not a club for making keys but one that em-

What’s the deal about KEY CLUB? phasizes volunteering as the KEY to becoming a great leader. Students participate in a number of community service projects, such as visiting nursing homes, feeding the needy at food banks, cleaning up local parks, and donating to charities through drives. Booker T’s KEY CLUB is one of the best in the District (ranked #12 in all of Texas and Oklahoma), having dedicated officers, over 200 members (including our very own Miss Hornet!), and an award-winning club website (“Top Three” Trophy Recipient for Distinguished Website for Texas/Oklahoma District).

Overall, KEY CLUB is an extremely fun organization that your children will not want to miss out on, so encourage them to join now by going to the school website (http://btw.tulsaschools.org) and then clicking on “Students” and then “Clubs and Or-ganizations.”

What Title 1 will do for BTWTitle I is the largest federal education program set up to aid

students in economically disadvantaged populations. The fund-ing is used to help students meet or exceed state testing targets and provides schools with additional funds to provide extra help for students, professional development for teachers, and instruc-tional materials including technology that will benefit all stu-dents. BTW, although a high performing school with students meeting or exceeding state testing targets, is not a Title I school. We are proud of these accomplishments and in order to achieve this we must test all students with a number of relevant stan-dardized exams. By qualifying under the Free or Reduced, sta-tus all test fees are waived which correlates to a $1,000 savings. However, with Title I funding BTW will be able to maintain the standard of excellence that is a part of the BTW legacy. Title I funding will enable BTW to offer students more after school educational opportunities, greater scope of instructional materials, and teachers who are abreast of the latest educational best practices assessment techniques. Currently, BTW is only 23 applications shy of meeting the Title I requirement. If you have not completed an application for Free or Reduced Lunch, please do so--all information is confidential and is used to de-termine BTW’s Title I status. Remember that if you already qualify then you must resubmit your application every year. The application deadline is October 31st.

Additionally, Students who qualify for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program also receive the following:n Test waivers for the ACT and the SATn NCAA registration waivern AP test fee waivern IB test fee waivern Kaplan test fee waivern Practice ACT and SAT feed waivedn PSAT fee waivedn Many Colleges and Universities will waive their application

hearing and vision screenings

I would like to get the word out to the parents that I am offering hearing and vision screenings in the school clinic again this year. I will be sending out a consent form to every student in the building through the first hour teachers. But if it does not make it home to the parents, they can call me for a referral.

PARKING PERMITSAll students who drive cars on campus during the school

day are required to have a current year BTW Parking Permit. Students who have not yet registered their car should see Dr. Chapman as soon as possible. There is a simple form to fill out and a fee of $2.00 for the parking tag.

Having all cars registered is a component of Booker T. Washington High School’s safety plan. It is extremely helpful to Security to know all cars in our student lots belong here. On a more practical note, when a student forgets and leaves their headlights on during the upcoming dark winter days, we know how to find them and correct the situation.

If you have any questions please call, Dr. Carol Chapman, Dean of Students, at 925-1015 or e-mail her at [email protected].

Student Spotlight:

rhameil Sampson, a senior at Booker T, was elected last April as the State Business Profession-als of America (BPA) Vice President, which is a big honor for Rhameil, BTW, and TPS. The screening process that led to election involved a personal essay, a test about BPA, presentation of a speech and a per-sonal interview with former state officers and commu-nity leaders. His term lasts through April 2010. BPA is a national student organization consisting of middle school, high school, and college students. It teaches students about leadership and how to be successful in business. Rhameil is responsible for half of Oklahoma where he spends time with local chapters, gives presen-tations at state conferences and more.

Christina Senger, Booker T junior, has been selected as the recipient of the Community Ser-vice Award for the Oklahoma District Tennis Associa-tion. She will be honored at the annual Oklahoma Awards Dinner on November 21 at The Greens Golf and Country Club in Oklahoma City.

I’m immensely proud to call myself an ‘06 Hornet. During my high school years, the Booker T Washing-ton community empowered me and my classmates to excel. The experiences and opportunities offered at BTW helped equip me and my peers for successful college careers. Not only did Booker T prepare us for the chal-lenging academic environment of college, but it also taught us to take advantage of every opportunity avail-able. The lessons I learned at Booker T have taken me to China, Spain, New Zealand, Australia, England, and most recently Peru, with my current internship. I’m very grate-ful to be a Booker T. Washington graduate.
