AbOut dbsAThe Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is the leading patient-directed national organization focusing

on depression and bipolar disorder. The organization fosters an environment of understanding about the impact and

management of these life-threatening illnesses by providing up-to-date, scientifically based tools and information. DBSA

supports research to promote more timely diagnosis, develop more effective and tolerable treatments, and discover

a cure. The organization works to ensure that people living with mood disorders are treated equitably. Assisted by a

Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) comprised of the leading researchers and clinicians in the field of mood disorders,

DBSA has more than 1,000 peer-run support groups across the country. Nearly five million people request and receive

information and assistance each year. DBSA’s mission is to improve the lives of people living with mood disorders.

WElCOME tO thE dbsA 2011 NAtIONAl CONFERENCE On behalf of the entire Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance family of

Board, staff, and chapters, we thank you for joining us in Houston for the

2011 National Conference—an inspiring and empowering weekend of peer

connections!

At the DBSA 2011 National Conference, renowned advocates, mental-

health experts, and community leaders will share vital knowledge and

the unique mutual support that people with the lived experience of

depression or bipolar disorder can provide their peers.

We’ve been there. We can help.

DBSA’s impressive alliance of over 300 chapters, nearly 1,000 support

groups, and 70,000 individuals across the country helps to ensure that

mental health resources are available when people need them, where they

need them, and how they need to receive them. Thank you for being part

of our nationwide grassroots network of peer connections—and for the

energy, engagement, and empathy you bring to the DBSA 2011 National

Conference.

We celebrate DBSA. We celebrate YOU.

Patty Duke, Academy Award winning actress, past President of the Screen Actors Guild, and best selling author, has been delighting and challenging audiences for more than 40 years with her work in movies, television and on Broadway. She has established herself as one of televisions most versatile and beloved actresses. Patty has received much recognition from her peers—an Oscar, two Golden Globes, three Emmy Awards and six Emmy Nominations and a People’s Choice Award. Community service awards have honored her commitment to many social issues. Since the publication of her autobiography, “Call Me Anna,” and her second book “A Brilliant Madness,” Patty spends a great deal of time and travel speaking on the topic of mental illness.

Susan Rose Blauner is a powerful voice in the fields of mental health recovery and personal change. A survivor of multiple suicide attempts, she has the unique distinction of transforming her experience with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and borderline personality disorder into the critically-acclaimed book, “How I Stayed Alive When My Brain Was Trying to Kill Me.” Susan delivers dynamic keynotes and workshops that discuss the intricacies of healing from mental illness and offers strategies for staying positive despite uncertain times. Susan is a recipient of the Survivor Achievement Award for Distinguished Creativity and Personal Effort in Suicide Prevention, presented by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Her work continues to empower and save lives throughout the world.

Laura Burke suffered from depression for most of her life, until she found the theatre. Laura was diagnosed with schizophrenia disorder in 2005, which robbed her of the ability to feel any emotion except anxiety and fear, and her acting career was halted in its tracks. Finally, years later, after surrounding herself with a supportive network and following a creative path once again, her brain and her heart have begun to heal. In 2007, Laura joined the Peer Support Staff at Laing House, where she ran drama and writing groups. In 2009, she was a Peer Support Facilitator at the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia. In 2010, Laura started her MA in Drama Therapy at Concordia University in Montreal and has performed her spoken word poetry widely. Most recently, Laura shared her poetry and her journey through mental illness in “Superman a Visual Poem,” a video produced in association with the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia.

Clarence Jordan is the Director of Recovery and Resiliency Services of Tennessee at ValueOptions Behavioral Health Services, where he is involved in planning on matters of current trends as well as treatment practices for both mental illness and substance abuse. He previously was manager of recovery and resiliency for Magellan Health Services of Tennessee and served as a member of the Tennessee Mental Health Planning Council. Jordan currently serves on the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) National Board of Directors. Clarence Jordan has deep roots in the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Tennessee (NAMI Tennessee), previously serving as Operations Officer and Director of the Multicultural Outreach Initiative, which led to the largest increase in African American membership in the organization’s history in 2006. As director he developed and wrote “The Guide to Mental Illness, What Every Family Needs to Know.” His efforts led the state office to award him the coveted National Multicultural Outreach Award.

The 2010 Klerman Young Investigator Award recipient is Roy H. Perlis, M.D., M.Sc., Director of Pharmacogenomics Research in the Department of Psychiatry, Associate Director of the Psychiatric Genetics Program in Mood and Anxiety Disorders, and Director of the Bipolar Clinical Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Over the last decade, Dr. Perlis has played important roles in several of the major research collaborations in the area of mood disorders. He leads ongoing research using data from both the STAR*D and STEP-BD projects to examine genetic predictors of treatment response. He founded and co-leads the International Antidepressant Response Consortium for Pharmacogenetics.

For his career-long contributions to mental health research, the 2010 Klerman Senior Investigator Award recipient is Mark S. Bauer, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Attending Psychiatrist at VA Boston Healthcare System, and Associate Director, Center for Organization, Leadership, and Management Research. Dr. Bauer and his colleagues have published one of the first empirically supported self-care guides for people living with bipolar disorder. This innovative care model has been tested in a wide range of clinical settings and disseminated in the Veterans Affairs system. His most recent work addresses the adaptation and implementation of this care model in public and private sector settings throughout the United States.

DBSA extends its heartfelt gratitude to the many individuals without whom this conference would not

be possible: our 2011 conference sponsors for their generous support (please see the back cover of this

program for a listing); our conference presenters for their gracious gifts of time, talent, and expertise; our

2011 Chapter Conference Advisory Committee for their input and legwork; our conference volunteers for

their invaluable work; and, last but not least, our conference attendees for all of the peer support you

provide—this weekend and always. Many, many thanks to all!

DBSA has been working in partnership with the University of Michigan Depression Center (UMDC) to raise

the collective consumer voice in mental health research. We’re building a campaign of tools for consumers

to explore mental health research, and for researchers to learn more about how to make the participation

experience the best it can be for us. Our central goal is a brand-new mental health research focused website

—but we need your voice! On Saturday of the conference (May 21st), DBSA and UMDC staff will be taping

video interviews to feature on this new website. If you have a story about participating in mental health re-

search, we would love to hear it. Video interviews will last approximately 15 minutes, so you can still attend

conference activities. If you’d like to share a research participation story, please stop by the UMDC exhibit

booth to schedule a taping time.
