DEEP LEARNING LAB 2015New Pedagogies for Deep Learning
Join the global conversation about leading edge practices from multiple countries that are fostering Deep Learning accelerated by digital.
October 13-14, 2015
Bell Harbor International
Conference Center
2211 Alaskan Way, Pier 66,
Seattle, WA 98121
There is a revolution in learning rapidly emerging in some schools and school systems. What is phenomenal is that the ideas are coming from the field first, not from research. These developments need to be informed by research, and need to be enabled, assessed and spread. The Deep Learning Lab is our first opportunity to feature this early work. We hope that you will investigate new ideas, interact with global participants and contribute to as well as learn from the various innovations.
On behalf of the full NPDL team and presenters we are very pleased that you are participating in this learning lab. We very much look forward to learning with you!
We are a global innovation partnership dedicated to transforming learning by building knowledge
about deep learning competencies, the pedagogical practices that develop them and ways to
measure progress. We believe every child deserves an opportunity to develop competencies
of: collaboration; communication; critical thinking; creativity; character; and citizenship so that
they flourish in a complex world. We are joined by families, teachers, leaders and policymakers
worldwide who are jointly seeking ways to transform pedagogy and provide conditions that will
facilitate deep learning. We invite you to join the movement!

Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. Recognized as a
worldwide authority on educational reform, he advises policymakers
and local leaders around the world in helping to achieve the moral
purpose of all children learning. Fullan is a prolific, award-winning
author whose best-selling books have been published in many languages.
He bases his work on research and practice drawn from both the public and
private sectors, finding an increasing convergence.
From 2004-2013 Michael Fullan served as Special Adviser in Education to the
Premier of Ontario. He received the Order of Canada in December 2012 and
holds honorary doctorates from Duquesne University, Pennsylvania; University
of Edinburgh, Scotland; Newman University College, University of Leicester; and
Nipissing University in Canada.
Leadership in a Learning Age
The keynote will focus on three phenomena: why a learning revolution is in the offing; why it will require far more deep capacity than ever imagined; and what exciting new insights we are learning about the new role of leadership in enabling deep learning on the part of students and teachers.

Andreas Schleicher, Director for education and Skills at the oeCD. The
Directorate supports countries in their efforts to improve quality, equity and
efficiency in their education systems, to enhance the relevance of skills, and to
transform better skills into better jobs and better lives. Major programmes include
the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the oeCD Survey
of Adult Skills (PIAAC), the oeCD Teaching and Learning International Survey
(TALIS) and the development and analysis of benchmarks on the performance
of education systems (INES). The Directorate also co-ordinates OECD’s
horizontal Skills Strategy. He studied Physics in germany and
received a degree in Mathematics and Statistics in Australia. He
is the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including the
“Theodor Heuss” prize, awarded in the name of the first president
of the Federal Republic of Germany for “exemplary democratic
engagement”. He holds an honorary Professorship at the University
of Heidelberg.
In the past, education was about teaching people something. Now, it’s about making sure that individuals develop a reliable compass and the navigation skills to find their own way through an increasingly uncertain, volatile and ambiguous world. These days, we no longer know exactly how things will unfold, often we are surprised and need to learn from the extraordinary, and sometimes we make mistakes along the way. And it will often be the mistakes and failures, when properly understood, that create the context for learning and growth. The presentation looks at the knowledge, skills and character attributes that are of growing importance and the kind of learning environments that will help foster these.

The Power of Collaboration
Using the NPDL rubrics to guide them, a group
of seven Christchurch schools have transitioned
from being insular and competitive, to being highly
collaborative and collegial. The schools are now
operating as a ‘collective’, with a shared concern for
the students in their area of the city, and the impact
on teacher engagement and student achievement
has been significant. Margot McKeegan, Professional
Learning Service Facilitator, CORE Education, Ltd;
Derek Wenmoth, Director of E-Learning CORE
Education, Ltd
A tool kit of strategies to assist teachers to design for deeper learning
Join the Victorian cluster and explore ideas to develop
a shared understanding of what deep learning is and
gain tips for designing learning; encouraging student
agency over their learning; and assessing learning
progress. Share reflective processes to review the
learning design ensuring a cycle of continuous impro-
vement. The strategies shared have been used at a
Cluster and school level. Marc Blanks, Senior Project
Officer and NPDL Capacity Lead, Digital Learning and
STEM Branch Department of Education and Training
Victoria; Lynn Davie, Director and NPDL Co-Cluster
Lead, Digital Learning and STEM Branch Department of
Education and Training Victoria
NPDL: A catalyst and connector for Finland
There are 7 cities in the NPDL program in Finland.
Learn how the NPDL network is working in four cities:
Oulu, Helsinki, Espoo and Salo. Anneli Rautiainen
from the Finnish National Board of Education will be
speaking about the challenges and possibilities of Fin-
nish education in the light of the newly designed core
curriculum, which will be deployed in the Autumn of
2016 in all Finnish schools. The new curricula consists
of transversal skills, which are similar to the 6C’s in
NPDL. Participants will have opportunities to ask
questions of the Finnish participants/representatives.
Anneli Rautiainen, NBOE, Head of Basic Education and
Early Childhood Education unit; Lucina Hanninen, Regi-
onal Headmaster, Oulu; Tuukka Soini, Digital Develop-
ment Manager Education and Cultural Services, Espoo;

Connecting Peers with Purpose
Drawing from examples from the New Pedagogies
for Deep Learning project, this presentation will
examine how Victorian Dept. of Education’s schools
are using innovative technology to uniquely connect
teachers to data and evidence of student outcomes,
alongside visibility on the strategies responsible for
producing, or failing to produce those results. It will
show how by connecting teachers to decisional data,
within and beyond their schools, we are socializing
change, building pedagogical and capital and driving
the cultural shift to change viewed as a persistent
collective enterprise. Phil Stubbs, Education Director,
Verso Learning

The Deep Learning Competencies, better known as the 6 C’s, are the skill sets each and every student needs to achieve and excel in, in order to flourish in today’s complex world. These competencies form the foundation for the New Measures and NPDL teachers use the Deep Learning Progressions to assess students’ current levels in each of the six Deep Learning Competencies. They combine this with information about student achievement, interests, and aspirations to get a clear understanding of what each student needs to learn.
BECOME A CLUSTER100+ schools
NPDL invites clusters of 100 or more schools to join and collaborate
to improve learning for every student by engaging all levels of the
education system.
