    Introduction

Technology is continuously changing and organizations areintroducing new technologies and new processes to improveproductivity, profitability to stay competitive in the market.

There is a need for a major paradigm shift in Educationsector which would not happen with small incremental andunrelated changes here and there .

We need to supplement the traditional systems of educationwith innovative and flexible systems using currentTechnology, capable of providing quality education to largetarget group of learners to suit their requirements andexpectations.

    Overview

Educational sytsems should change to meet current challenges

    and needs.

There is need to change traditional teaching methods.

This paper focuses change management and re-engineering of

    educational processes.

We discuss new paradigms in educational systems to promote

    innovation.

Some of the paradigms are Business Process Reengineering

(BPR) ,Open Education and E-Learning etc.

    Problems Faced in the

Technical Education The world around us has changed dramatically but our

higher education continue to operate in the old policy frame.

There is need for paradigm shift.

Technology is growing fast and the traditional educational

system has many limitations and it cannot meet the demand

on students to face 21st century challenges.

There is need for paradigm shift in educational systems tofully utilize the revolutions and innovations taking place in

    digital technology.

    Solution to problems &

Challenges Change Management is a tool for analyzing andaddressing the current challenges in educational

    systems.

    Re-engineering the educational processes with

    technology as change enabler.

New paradigms in educational systems areeLearning,Web based Learning ,Open education, etc

The following slides discuss the new paradigms in

    Education

    New Paradigms in Education

    Open Education

Main Focus New way of communicating, collaborating, and

exchanging information such that every student is able

to achieve his or her full potentialHow it is different

    from Traditional

    learning schemes

    and advantages

More open access to education for more students

    E-Learning

Main Focus Alternative form of learning

How it is different from Traditional

    learning schemes and advantages

    To extend the learning environment

beyond the four walls of class room

E-learning provides a learning experienceto the learners via the internet versus the

    traditional brick and mortar learning

    E-learning provides opportunities

    Active Learning

Main Focus Active learning puts the responsibility

of organizing what is to be learned in

the hands of the learner themselves.

    How it is different from

    Traditional learning schemes

    and advantages

It is the teachers job to promote

    Reengineering the educational

    Processes

The stimulus for re-engineering is the combination of four ongoing transitions in

    society. They are:

    Changing educational needs.

    Requirements for alternative learning opportunities.

Extensive availability of digital technology for

    educational materials development.

The potential of enhancing human performance (both

learners [students] and learning facilitators [teachers])

    IT-The Change Enabler

IT plays a major role in BPR success and it serves as a change lever.

The innovations and advancement in Technology have enormouspotential

The challenges and problems faced in Educational sector can beconsidered as opportunities for redesigning and improving theexisting processes.

IT offers unprecedented opportunities for introducing new ways of

    learning.

Some of the recent paradigms in Higher Education like Web basedLearning, E-Learning, ICT etc have enormous potential for educatingthe masses at cheaper cost.

They can supplement the traditional class room learning.

    Instruction vs Learning Paradigm

In recent times, the shift from Instruction centric approach to Learner

    centric approach is advocated

    Instruction Paradigm The Learning Paradigm

    Provide/deliver instruction

    Transfer knowledge from faculty

    to students

    Offer courses and programs

    Improve the quality of instruction

    Achieve access for diverse

    students

    Produce learning

    Elicit students discovery and

    construction of knowledge

    Create powerful learning

    environments

Active vs Passive LearningActive vs Passive LearningActive Learning promotes a better learning

environment through which the student uses prior

knowledge effectively and acquires new knowledge

    easily.

Active learning is learning by doing

Such teaching is dynamic and the continual

revisions to teaching and delivery methods, visualaids, demonstrations, etc. are endless. The students

have the opportunity to remember up to 50% the

    content of each class session.

Intrepretation of Experimental results basedIntrepretation of Experimental results based

on data collected regarding Web Usageon data collected regarding Web Usage

From the data collected for One YearPeriod, the highest number of 170 visits happened in May-2009 by 133 visitors.

The increase in demand for the web site could be attributed to

students appearing for the university examination conductedduring May-2009.

It can be further noted that the number of visits has fallendown to 85 with 65 visitors during the month of June-2009,during which the students had vacation.

The college reopened in July-2009 and again a spurt in visitshappened.

We can come to the logical conclusion that there was a patternin web site usage that during examination time more numberof students had visited the web site and referred the course

material and instructions for various courses.

    Future Work

A project will be under taken in future to

    simulate the Re-engineering of the

educational processes and the outcomewill be measured to find out whether

drastic improvements have taken place in

speed, cost in the teaching and learning

    process.

Conclusion The problems and challenges faced by current Educational systems

suggest improving the teaching and learning process to suit current needs of

    Industry and society.

Re-engineering can be applied to educational systems by redesigning the

education processes which can produce dramatic improvement in theTeaching and Learning Process.

Re-engineering suggests using latest Technology as IT Levers which are

    also called change enablers.

Some of the paradigms discussed for improving the teaching and learning

process are BPR, Kaizen, and e-learning etc.

Major change in educational systems would happen by moving from

    Instruction Paradigm to Learning Paradigm.

Experimental results on an alternate form of learning based on e-learning

    paradigm was presented and discussed.
