Rantz & Ravez from Dennis Zine

Does California Governor Gavin Newsom care at all about crime victims or their families or our police officers that keep us safe?

Recent political moves by Governor Newsom clearly demonstrate that he does not give a damn about victims of crime or the law enforcement officers that enforce the laws to keep people safe in the once-golden state of California. The following examples of recent moves by the governor illustrate what is important to him and his administration that frequently squanders our tax dollars.

I will begin with the bill authored by California State Senator Bob Hertzberg from the San Fernando Valley that passed the Assembly and Senate and was presented to the Governor. The Governor signed into law the Hertzberg bill that removes the 147-year-old California law established to provide some protection to our police officers facing dangerous situations.

The 1872 California Posse Comitatus Act obligates an able-bodied person over 18 years of age to assist a peace officer in distress. People can now just walk away from a situation where an officer is in need of assistance and asks for help and those that ignore the request face no penalty or consequences.

I would hope that most of us would at least call 911 when an officer is facing a violent situation or better yet assist the officer out of our concern for his or her safety.

While this 1872 law was not used by law enforcement officers very often, it could be used when an officer is faced with a gang situation or a violent suspect in remote areas of the state.

Remember that there are many officers that work one-

person units in California and some suspects have no respect for the law or police officers in general.

The California State Sheriff’s Association stated that, “There are situations in which a peace officer might look to private persons for assistance in matters of emergency or risk to public safety and we are unconvinced that this statute should be repealed.”

As a side note to this situation, the New York Police Officers Association offers a reward to people that come to the aid of NYPD officers that face combative suspects.

Attorney or District Attorney. Once the case is filed, the matter proceeds to court where justice is ultimately handed down after hearings and trials. When the matter is finally resolved in court, the individual that committed the crime is sentenced and the file is closed. In many cases, the suspect is sentenced to prison for a specific period of time or death. The victims and survivors are left with the understanding the Criminal Justice System has done its job and life must proceed.

If the suspect is sentenced to prison there is a term of time for incarceration.

To complicate the matter, the California Constitution gives the Governor the authority impose clemency on the case including commutation.

People serving time in California prisons may apply for a commutation. Governor Newsom recently granted 21 commutations to people in state prison. The commutations will permit the inmates to go before the Board of Parole Hearings for a hearing at which time the Parole Commissioners assess whether the inmate is suitable for release from prison.

Next Rantz and Ravez: Seven of Newsom’s commutations.

Dennis P. Zine. RantZ and RaveZ.

Interesting how little respect and concern for officer safety both Hertzberg and Newsom demonstrate for our police officers that risk their lives to keep us all safe.

While the laws are established to maintain a civilized society, the courts deal with the individuals that violate the laws and the criminal justice system takes over to maintain justice in our society. When politicians and the political system get involved, the matter becomes very cloudy and people ask, “Where is justice?”

Following the commission of a crime, the police are called to investigate the matter. When an arrest is made, the detectives investigate the case and submit the file to the prosecutor. It may be the office of the City

West Valley Playhouse to Present“Picasso at the Lapin Agile”

The West Valley Playhouse’s next production will be Steve Martin’s revised version of his long-running off-Broadway absurdist comedy “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.” It places Albert Einstein and Pablo Picasso in a Parisian cafe in 1904, just before the renowned scientist transformed physics with his theory of relativity and the celebrated painter set the art world afire with cubism. In his first comedy for the stage, the popular actor and screenwriter plays fast and loose with fact, fame and fortune as these two geniuses muse on the century’s achievements and prospects, as well as other fanciful topics with infectious dizziness.

The Playhouse will continue in its temporary location at Westfield Promenade next to Maggiano’s. The play runs October 11 through October 27, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2:30 pm. (Two Thursday showings on October 17 and 24.) For tickets call 884-1907 or visit www.wvplayhouse.com.

By Conni PorturoNearly 100 million Americans

experience chronic pain - more than those who have diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined.

Pain is a warning sign that indicates a problem that needs attention. Pain starts in receptor nerve cells located beneath the skin and in organs throughout the body. Living with pain can be debilitating and adversely affect everyday life. Eighty percent of adults suffer back pain at some point and it is the most common job-related disability related to missed days of work.

Arthritis, back pain, headaches and neck pain all affect us at some point in our lives and it can be eye opening, how you may feel fine one moment, and then in the next moment, you’re in excruciating pain.

I want you to believe me when I say, “Pain is a gift.”

I know it sounds crazy but that is the only way your body can talk to you and make you listen.

How many times have you tried to ignore the pain and find it coming back until finally you call the doctor, massage therapist, chiropractor, or acupuncturist?

Pain did its job. The job to allow you to investigate what is going on in your body, or make you slow down, or maybe even say, “Maybe I should start to take care of myself?”

That was your gift. Here are some simple

    daily self-care techniques that

you can start to use today.1: Breathe - We don’t realize

we are often holding our breath. Especially when you are lifting, twisting, pushing or pulling, be sure to use your breath, inhale before you begin a movement and exhale and engage your abdominal muscles as you complete the movement. This will help you brace your deep belly and back muscles for the activity.

Focused breathing is an easy to practice relaxation technique. Inhale through your nose for two counts, hold your breath for two counts, then slowly as if blowing out

through a straw exhale for two counts. Try this for six to eight rounds.

2: Baths - Take a few baths a week using Epsom salts and add some lavender. Set up your bath experience as if you were at the spa. Pillow behind your neck, soft lighting, music, or read a book. Allow yourself to let go and be fully present. No phone.

3: Move - Stand up from your desk every hour. Stand up and go to the bathroom, get some water, or just walk the halls. Sitting all day contributes to back pain. So, park farther away from your office, the mall, the restaurant, and use the stairs to get more steps in. Think about having a walking meeting. Why not go outside and walk and discuss the topics that you need to work on? Or take a movement class with a friend, or try a new movement class by yourself. Just move.

4: Take time out for fun - You heard me, often fun is left out of our workdays and our daily life. Go play a game, run outside, become a tourist, or do something crazy or silly. Learn to have fun again. Learning to listen to your body as it talks to you can be the best communication of your day.

By Janey RifkinAmid a major outbreak of

severe lung illness nationwide, health officials have linked a mysterious lung disease to vaping e-cigarettes.

Deaths, including one in L.A. County, have triggered officials of the Centers for Disease Control to publicly issue a warning to “stop vaping now.”

Close to 2,000 cases of the mysterious and severe lung diseases have been reported. Symptoms of the dangerous breathing sickness include

    Health & Wellness Update

CDC Says “Stop Vaping Now”shortness of breath and vomiting, as well as chest pain.

Whether or not the e-cigarettes were laced with THC, the chemical which is the high-inducing ingredient in marijuana, all the victims had a history of recent vaping. The public should know that vaping is advertised as a healthier alternative to smoking, which is false.

Electronic cigarettes, which have been available in the U.S. since about 2007 and have grown into a more-than-$6 billion a year industry, are battery-powered devices that typically heat a flavored nicotine solution into inhalable aerosol. Then there are several vaping chemicals, some of which are known to be toxic. In any event, sicknesses in the category respiratory and breathing health can do lasting damage to an individual, or cause death, and should be avoided at all costs.

Vaping has become more popular in recent years. Officials say it is possible the mysterious illness will now be defined, although it may have been missed or misdiagnosed because of the small numbers until now.

Vaping - a cautionary tale. Stop vaping now!

On September 12 two members of the Woodland Hills Senior Center AdHoc Committee (Marilyn Faber and Alex Farassati) met with two members of Councilmember Bob Blumenfield’s office, as well as two staffers from the City of Los Angeles Park and Recreation Department, to discuss further steps in building a new senior center and initiate new programs for Woodland Hills seniors.

In the previous meeting, the issue of finding a city-owned parcel was discussed and one participant mentioned the availability of a city-owned park on the corner of Topanga Canyon Blvd and Mulholland Drive called Alizondo Drive Park.

The AdHoc Committee members visited the site and with the help of volunteer engineers and planners conducted a preliminary study of the parcel and prepared a 19-page Preliminary Feasibility Study and submitted copies of the study to the councilmember and City of Los Angeles staff for review and evaluation. This vacant parcel is three acres in size and covered with some native and non-native trees and vegetation. Currently at least one homeless camper resides on this parcel. The land has two flat pads; the lower pad is approximately one acre in size, and the upper pad is about one third of an acre. The lower pad can accommodate a two-story senior center with approximately 10,000 square foot footprint with 65 parking spaces, 10 handicapped accessible parking and two shuttle/bus parking spaces. The parcel is adjacent to a bus stop and accessible by public transportation. The Preliminary Feasibility Study will be posted on www.woodlandhillsSC.com.

If approved by the City of

Los Angeles, this parcel is an ideal location for a brand new, top of the line senior center. A conceptual site plan prepared by a volunteer civil engineer was presented to the group for further consideration. It’s estimated that the project including design, grading, site improvement and building construction will cost between $4M to $5M. City and council member staff promised to look into this option and evaluate the feasibility of the lot for future development.

A survey form will be posted on Survey Monkey very soon for all interested seniors to take. A meeting in a local library will be called in the near future to meet and confer with individuals that wish to help this cause.

By Stan SchroederWe have been here in the

Valley for 20 years, but you probably didn’t even know we were in your neighborhood.

Our Conservative congregation is led by Rabbi David Vorspan, Founding Rabbi (and still there) of de Toledo High School, 22622 Vanowen St. in West Hills. We hold our Shabbat and High Holy Days services at de Toledo. Our twice-monthly Shabbat Saturday morning contemporary services meet from 10:30 am to 12 noon, followed by a Kiddush. Our service features mostly singing, as our name “Song of Our People” suggests. There is a portion of this fully engaging service for people to share events for which we can be thankful and have made our lives the blessings we enjoy. Rabbi Vorspan also shares lessons from the Torah portion of the week.

We have one more asset only available at a smaller congregation: a family caring relationship led by Rabbi David and Rebbetzin Bonnie Vorspan. Bonnie is our Shabbat Torah reader and enhances all our services and activities.

This year we are introducing Ayana Haviv as our Cantorial Soloist for the High Holy Days. Haviv was born in Jerusalem to an Ashkenazi mother and a Sephardic father, immigrated to Chicago with her family when she was three years old, and grew up attending a Conservative shul. Her mother, a talented amateur singer, taught her every Israeli song she knew, and they would harmonize together many evenings - a tradition she continues with her children.

Ayana attained a B.A. at UC Berkeley and then a year in a PhD program at UCLA in which she studied contemporary Israeli culture. She took a year off to see if she would pursue a career as a

professional singer, which had been her long-time hobby. The result was her joining LA Master Chorale, the chorus at LA Opera, and beginning a 15-year career singing in many different styles on the soundtracks of films and television.

Throughout her professional musical career, she has always sung in synagogues: first as part of the High Holidays octet at Temple Shalom for the Arts, then as part of the Shabbat quartet at Sinai Temple, and finally as cantorial soloist at Bayit Shelanu, a High Holidays service for unaffiliated Jews that met at UCLA. She also kept connected to her Jewish musical roots by singing in a klezmer band, Klezmer Juice, a Middle Eastern band, and continuing to sing Jewish music at every opportunity.

We invite you to join us starting Sunday night, September 29 at 8 pm for Erev Rosh Hashanah through Wednesday, October 9 at 10 am. Tickets for our complete High Holy Days services for non-members are priced at adult - $125, senior - $100, and child - $50. Our lowest annual membership dues in the Valley are $300 single, $600 couple. High Holy Days tickets are included. Call Ellen Fremed at (818) 886-8853 for membership or ticket requests.
