Soft start functionSoft start function prevents inrush current
When the power supply is turned ON a large surge of current
suddenly flows into the decoupling capacitor, placing a
considerable load on the power circuitry in the previous stage
as well as possibly damaging the IC itself.
The BD2055AFJ and BD2045AFJ integrate a soft start function
that suppresses inrush current, significantly improving the
safety and stability of the entire set.

Power supply management functionUSB port power management on a single chip
BD2055AFJ and BD2045AFJ are high side switch ICs that
integrate all of the elements required for USB port power
management, including low ON-resistance switches, switch
control circuits, overcurrent detection, and overcurrent control,
in a single package. In addition, multiple protection circuits are
built in, such as thermal shutdown, low voltage malfunction
prevention, and soft start, ensuring a stable supply of power.

the input, even when the MOSFET is turned OFF. ROHM’s 1ch
low output current USB high side switch ICs integrate a

An inrush current flows through the load capacitor whenever a
device is connected to the USB port. This current is
instantaneous but large enough to cause an overcurrent
detection error. Both the BD6518FJ, BD6519FJ BD2061AFJ,
and BD2065AFJ feature an overcurrent detection flag output
with built-in delay filter (2.5ms) that outputs a flag (warning) to
the CPU if overcurrent conditions persist after the delay time
has elapsed, preventing misdetection caused by inrush current.

Specifications
In a USB system, a 150µF capacitor is connected to the power supply output of the connector. If a
parasitic diode exists at the High side switch, when the power supply is turned OFF the output voltage
becomes greater than the input voltage due to the capacitor, causing a current to flow to the input terminal
through the parasitic diode.
ROHM’s High side switch, however, utilizes a configuration that cancels the effects of the parasitic diode,
preventing reverse current from flowing, enabling the system to turn OFF completely.

BD2042AFJ are high side switch ICs that integrate all of the
elements required for USB port power management, including
low ON-resistance switches, switch control circuits, overcurrent
detection, and overcurrent control, in a single package. Two
built-in switches, switch control terminals, and flag output
terminals make power management of 2 ports possible. In
addition, multiple protection circuits are built in, such as
thermal shutdown, under voltage lock out, and soft start,
ensuring a stable supply of power. Both Active High and Active
Low ICs are available, allowing the customer to select the ideal
solution based on set requirements.

Two types of temperature protection circuits are integrated and

conditions persist after the delay time has elapsed, preventing
misdetection caused by inrush current.

As notebook PCs and other compact, portable devices
increase in sophistication while becoming smaller and more
lightweight power efficiency becomes increasingly important in
order to prolong battery life.
Most of these devices typically incorporate various circuit
blocks and power supply systems that go into standby (idle)
state when not in use, reducing overall power consumption.
Conventional power management circuits are typically
configured using a number of components, including
PMOSFETs for switching, NMOSFETs for control, and CR
circuits to adjust startup times.
ROHM’s BD6520F and BD6522F integrate a low ON-

The BD2270HFV is available in the compact HVSOF5 package
measuring just 1.6×1.6×0.6mm. This IC provides a significant
reduction not only in the number of external parts required, but
in mounting area as well – approximately 35% less than
comparable discrete configurations – making it ideal for
compact devices of all types.
Specifications
Smoothing capacitors are connected to the power switch output. Since the
electrical charge in the capacitors is initially zero, there is a considerable
amount of current flow (inrush current) when the switch is turned ON as
the charge builds up. As a result, the system could malfunction due to
operation of the current limiting/ low voltage reset protection circuits or
voltage drops along the power supply line.
ROHM’s power switch ICs suppress inrush current to the output capacitors
by turning on the switches gradually.

When the AEN terminal is at High the charge pump in the
BD2270HFV will charge the Gate of the NMOSFET. The
amount of time the NMOSFET is turned ON is determined by
the Gate capacity. Connecting a capacitor to the Gate terminal

Built-in 3× step-up charge pump for gate drive
The voltage required for driving the NMOSFET Gate is generated by the internal
charge pump, which provides 3 times the voltage level of the supply voltage. In
addition, a capacitor is built in, eliminating the need for external components.
Output discharge circuit
The output discharge circuit operates when the AEN terminal is Low. During
operation the MOSFET switch (200Ω typ.) mounted between the DISC and GND
terminals turns ON. Connecting between the DISC terminal and source (load)
side of the NMOSFET enables immediate discharging of capacitive loads.

The BD4153EV, BD4153EFV designed for use with the new
“ExpressCard™” PC card standard endorsed by PCMCIA
(Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)
were the first in the world to be awarded a Compliance ID
(EC100001), indicating compliance with all of the required
specifications, making it possible to configure optimized
applications.
New ExpressCard™ interface3ch power switch and management function
for ExpressCard™ PC applications
Management functions, protection circuits, and a 3ch power
switch are integrated onto a single chip. Along with low ON-
resistance, which limits conversion losses, the power switch
comes with a full line of management functions, including card
removal and power supply/chipset standby notification, making
it ideally suited as an easily configurable “ExpressCard™”
interface that conforms to PCMCIA standards.

Output discharge characteristicsBuilt-in discharge circuit quickly shuts card OFF
When the switch is turned OFF the remaining voltage in the
card’s power supply lines is discharged through the discharge
switches between each output and Ground, preventing
malfunction. The discharge circuit operates when the card is
ejected and during UVLO, minimizing the amount of time the
supply voltage is unstable.
Built-in power management circuitStatus monitoring function eases chipset load
Built-in status monitoring detects card presence, system status,
and input voltage, enabling power ON/OFF operation using a
single chip – eliminating the need for software control while
ensuring support for sudden card insertion/removal.
UVLO circuit
(Under Voltage Lock Out)
A UVLO circuit is built in that prevents
switch malfunctions when the input
voltage drops. The switches are turned
OFF when the input voltage drops below a
threshold value and will remain OFF until
the input voltage reaches a preset level.

Overcurrent flag function
The OC terminal in the BD4153FV and
BD4153EFV will go Low if the current flow
through the 3ch switches exceeds a preset
level, notifying the system of an overcurrent
state. In addition, the mask time can be set
so that the device will not respond to
extremely short current pulses by connecting
a capacitor to the OC Delay terminal.
Thermal shutdown
The thermal shutdown circuit turns the
switch OFF once the chip temperature
rises above a predetermined value,
preventing damage while improving the
reliability of the set. An automatic restore
circuit is built in that turns the switch ON
when the temperature decreases to within
normal limits.
Overcurrent limiting circuit
The overcurrent circuit in the Power
switch series for ExpressCard™ monitors
the current flow through the 3ch switches
and limits the output current once it
exceeds a threshold value. This, along
with the overcurrent function flag, ensures
even greater reliability.

functionality into each channel. BD4154FV and BD4155FV
feature a fixed startup time of 1ms, while the BD4153FV and
BD4153EFV offer adjustable startup times via external
capacitor.
