PRESIDENT’S WELCOMEThis 2013 National Meeting is the culmination of two years hard work and planning by the committee and members of the MG Car Club of Queensland, on whose behalf we welcome all participants and guests to Toowoomba. An event of this scale would not be possible were it not for the dedicated efforts of our National Meeting Chairman Richard Mattea and his wife Carly Mattea. My thanks to you both.

The decision to hold our third National Meeting in this part of regional Queensland was influenced by the facilities available and the various local attractions and activities that this area has to offer.

Hosting of the National meeting is an expensive and time consuming exercise. It would not have been possible without both the financial assistance of sponsors and the support of a large number of volunteer club members who commit an enormous number of hours to guarantee the success of these functions.

We are proud to have the involvement of MG Motor Australia. The new model MG6 on display here this weekend is soon to be released. It is great to see the continued existence and progress of the MG name. Enjoy your time with the newest member of the MG “family”.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants of this year’s National Meeting during the Easter period. As always the camaraderie of making new friends and previous ones revisited should make this a memorable event.

The MG Car Club of Queensland wishes all participants, officials, guests and spectators, a very enjoyable weekend, the best of luck in competition and a safe journey home.

ORGANISING CHAIRMAN’S REPORTThe MG Car Club of Queensland is pleased to be able to host the 2013 MG National Meeting in Toowoomba, the gateway to the Southern Darling Downs. On behalf of the club, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to all MG enthusiasts from intra and interstate along with our overseas guests.

Whilst you are in Toowoomba I hope you do take time to experience all that it and the Southern Downs has to offer, and be sure to take advantage of its country hospitality and atmosphere.

Also I would like to acknowledge the support given to me by the head of each sub-committee who have worked tirelessly over the past two years to bring this event together. Many thanks to the other volunteers who have spent many hours carrying out all of the ‘hands on’ preparation in the background. I would also like to extend my thanks to the members of the various motorsport officials groups and car clubs that have assisted with the running of this event.

It is my privilege to extend a special welcome to MG Motor Australia and Mr Albert Liu in particular. I’m sure you will agree it’s great to see the return of the MG marque to the country. Whilst we are still a few weeks away from the car’s Australian release, Mr. Liu has been kind enough to bring 6 examples to Toowoomba for us to view and enjoy. For a lucky few a test drive could also be on the cards. Please take time over the weekend to introduce yourself to Mr. Liu and the representatives of MG Motor Australia and show them that the MG really is the marque of friendship.

I trust that you will have an enjoyable National Meeting, it has been our great pleasure to organise it for you.

- Richard Mattea, Chairman 2013 MG NATIONAL MEETING ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The Silverstone GP circuit, Abingdon, the Motor Heritage Centre at Gaydon, the Prescott Hillclimb and Longbridge are all within easy access. We are right on the edge of the lovely Cotswolds, superb touring country with their quaint villages and cosy pubs. The narrow twisty roads through the scenic rolling hills must have been designed with MGs in mind.

KIMBER RUNEvent Director .............................. Paul Lupton (0409 269 770)Easter Day Sunday 31st March .. 9:00am

Picnic Point, Tourist Road.

This Kimber Run continues the tradition of an enjoyable and casual drive to explore some of the attractions of Toowoomba and its environs. The event is not competitive and does not contribute points to your MG centre’s cumulative result.

Members of the Toowoomba Chapter of MGCCQ have collaborated to develop this 82 miles (132km) route. Your running sheets contain driving instructions and an excellent running commentary illustrating much of the historical and other features along the route.

There are several opportunities to enjoy morning tea along the way. These are indicated in the commentary. A pre-paid buffet lunch will be available at the Gatton Cultural Centre from 11.00am to 2.00pm. Vouchers will be issued at Registration.

Start Heller Street on the southern side of Picnic Point restaurant, Tourist Road, Toowoomba.

This year’s Observation Run is a traditional test of navigation and observation skills, NOT a speed event with timed sections. The Run has been designed with safety as the chief consideration. The route uses sealed secondary roads except for a couple of unavoidable traverses of highways.

Entrants’ vehicles must display the 2013 National Meeting number and the scrutineering sticker.

Start The Run will commence from Heller Street on the southern side of the Picnic Point restaurant, off Tourist Road. On arrival please park as directed.

Irrespective of your start time, you must complete the route and hand in your answer sheet by 2.00pm.

Communication equipment During the Observation Run, the use of all forms of communication equipment including mobile phones and UHF radio is forbidden, except in an emergency.

The route The route of approximately 77 miles (123 km) has been designed to show you landscapes of the Darling Downs. All the roads are sealed, with some short sections of the national highway. Enjoy the varied scenery along the way.

The route has been divided into two sections. At the beginning of each section a set of questions and relevant directions will be issued. Answer sheets will be collected at the end of each section.

Refreshments Morning Tea and Lunch orders have been placed for those who ordered and paid via the online or offline Registration Form. The Run finishes at the Lunch stop.

What to bring You will find it helpful if you bring the following: pens and pencils, highlighter pen and the folding map issued at Registration.

competitor will have 1 Familiarisation/Qualifying session and 2 Timed sessions throughout the day. A competitor need only set 1 completed lap time to be considered for any awards. Further runs may be considered if time allows.

Catering Food and drinks will be available, including Bacon and Egg Burgers for breakfast at the venue along with a basic BBQ lunch. Hot coffee and tea will also be available.

Entry The venue will be open from 7.00am. Competitors will be directed to park in the grassed paddock area.

Start Time All competitors should arrive no later than 7:30 am. This is to ensure that competitors have sufficient time to complete their safety check and to obtain and fix their MyLaps transponder to their car. Each competitor must have their own transponder. Only one transponder is to be fitted to the vehicle at any one time. Please ensure that you bring your $100 (cash only) refundable deposit. Track Familiarisation/Qualifying sessions should begin at 8:30 am.

Safety Check & Car Preparation Please ensure that all loose objects are removed from the vehicle and that forward facing glass has been covered. Please ensure that your competitor number is displayed on the top left hand side of the windscreen.

Drivers’ Briefing & Event Procedure Prior to the commencement of the event a drivers’ briefing will be held. Attendance at the Drivers’ Briefing is compulsory and all drivers must sign the Driver’s sign-on sheet. It is anticipated that this will take place at approximately 8:00 am in the Grand Stand on the main straight adjacent to the entry to the track.

At the completion of the drivers’ briefing competitors will be asked to assemble their cars in the Marshalling Area where they will be assigned into the initial groups. Each competitor will then complete 2 laps behind the MG6 Course Car to familiarise themselves with the circuit layout. The MG6 Course Car will then pull off the circuit and competitors will continue on for a further 2 laps in which they will set a “Qualifying” time. This time will then be used to group similar speed competitors irrespective of the model of MG being driven.

Once all competitors have completed their “Qualifying” session they will be grouped from slowest to fastest with a maximum of 8 cars on the track at any one time. Your car number will be called by the Pit Marshall and you will need to be ready to go when called. Groups of cars may change throughout the day to ensure that car speeds are being matched. Overtaking between vehicles is permitted in accordance with the Super Sprint standing regulations and

22

as long as it is safe to do so but competitive “racing” between vehicles is not permitted. Each run will consist of a partial “warm up”/out lap, followed by 3 flying laps, followed by a “cool down”/in lap.

Only your fastest lap time will count towards both class and outright trophies.

At the beginning of your first flying lap you will be given a waved green flag, as you commence your last lap you will be shown the “last lap” board. On the cool down lap the last flag point (point 12) will display the “Pit” board to ensure all competitors move off the circuit correctly.

Please ensure that you complete your “warm up” and “cool down” laps at only slightly below competition pace to ensure the start of the next group isn’t delayed.

Double Entries All drivers of double entered vehicles are to inform the mar-shals so that appropriate arrangements can be made to ensure that the time keepers know that the second entrant is in the vehicle. This also applies to family entries. It should be possible to give the vehicle sufficient cool down time in between competitors runs. Please ensure that only the competition number of the actual competitor is on display at any one time. Other numbers should be “struck out” using a piece of electrical tape or similar. Please ensure that the correct transponder for each driver is fitted to the vehicle.

2013 ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR MG’S

This year represents a number of major anniversaries for the MG Marque and its initial parent Morris Motors, (or more correctly Morris Garages). It is in fact the centenary of the first car produced by William Morris, the Morris Oxford.

A number of MG models are having significant birthdays in 2013, below is an attempt to summarize and acknowledge all of them, my apologies to any model or car that I may have overlooked.

It is the 90th Anniversary of the oldest MG badged car in Australia -a 14/28, beautifully restored and maintained by Julie Craig.

It is the 80th Anniversary of the iconic MG K3. Perhaps no other model signifies the MG Marque more than this car. We are fortunate that Australia punches way above its weight with examples of the K3, and no MG event is complete without an example of this model.

Also at this time celebrating its 80th Anniversary is the L type. This model was introduced alongside the K series.

The last in the line of the handsome MG Saloons which epitomised elegance, luxury and performance, the WA, celebrates its 75th Anniversary in 2013.

Although clearly produced in 1938 when an XPAG engine was quietly dropped into a TA the TB was not publically announced until 1939. The forerunner of the TC this much sought after model had its production run curtailed by the outbreak of WW2. It would only be fair to acknowledge that in 2013 it turns 75.We then await the post WW2 arrival in 1953 of the “stopgap” but very lovely and highly esteemed TF 1250. Not welcomed by the critics when first produced this model is now highly sought after. A happy 60th Anniversary to the TF 1250.

Twenty years later in 1973, arrived the MGB GT V8, and with its 40th Anniversary in 2013.

Following in 1983, the MG Maestro (although not marketed in Australia) – its 30th Anniversary.

The MGRV8, originally produced for the Japanese market, continues to find its way into Australia in ever increasing numbers. This year represents its 20th Anniversary.

26

The MGZ series was unfortunately short lived in our market. The ZT 260 was available but not a volume seller in 2003. However this year see the model celebrate its 10th Anniversary.

In 2013 Australia is once again ready and eager to welcome a new MG. The MG 6. We are fortunate that MG Motor Australia is giving us, the MG enthusiast the first exposure to their most recent Australian offering here in Toowoomba.

We hope that they can continue the proud history of the Marque and that a new generation of MG enthusiast as well as the old, will embrace this opportunity.

THE FEATURED PARAGON – THE MG K3

It would be impossible to overstate the importance of the MG K3 in motoring history. These cars produced essentially for competition were entered in one class or another at almost every race meeting from their introduction until the outbreak of WW2.

In Australia these amazing cars remained active in racing into the late 40’s and 50’s, where they were very competitive in their class in many types of competition events. Today no Historic or MG event is complete without a K3 on the entry list.

To many they represent the pinnacle of small-capacity, pre-war sports and racing car design and performance. Of the 30 produced, Australia has six original and running examples. Flatteringly there are also now 11 “K3” recreations in Australia. (The actual number of originals often quoted as 33, included the two prototypes and EX 135). Incidentally, 93 still exist!

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORYWilliam Morris began business as a bicycle repairer, dealer and manufacturer. By 1902 Morris had made his first entry to motorized transport by constructing a motorcycle.

After some failed ventures with business partners Morris decided to concentrate on servicing, repairing and selling motor cars. This led to the establishment of “The Morris Garage”. At this time Morris had also become an agent for Humber, Singer, Standard and Wolseley cars.

Morris then turned his hand to producing his own motor car and the first Morris Oxford appeared in 1913. Thus the founder of the MG Marque celebrates the Centenary of Morris cars in 2013.

William Morris continued his business after the interruption of WW1, but now as “Morris Motors”. At the same time Morris Garages continued selling and repairing cars under Morris’ stewardship. In 1921 Morris appointed Cecil Kimber to the position of ‘Sales Manager of Morris Garages’, but after the sad demise of the then General Manager, Kimber was promoted to fill the vacancy.

Cecil Kimber was ambitious and energetic. He saw opportunities to upgrade the standard Morris range of cars and to sell them at a premium. Soon he began to market the modified cars alongside the standard range.

Page 30: NEW MG6 · 2018-04-23 · existence and progress of the MG name. Enjoy your time with the newest member of the MG “family”. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants

28

The concept blossomed initially with the Morris Chummy model, followed by the 14/28 Oxford, the 14/40 and the now famous 18/80. The styling of these cars followed the Morris Bullnose radiator style, until Morris changed the shape to the “flat” radiator. This shape not only blended with the elegant MG body style, but became a significant influence of the future of the MG range.

In 1927 Cecil Kimber was given permission by William Morris to expand. Very quickly the project was implemented and resulted in the production moving from Bainton Road to Edmund Road, Cowley.

Kimber’s aspirations saw him move even further upmarket from the Morris range with an entirely new six cylinder engine. With this engine incorporated into a strong chassis with upgraded suspension and steering, a very high standard MG six evolved. This was no longer a re-badged Morris and the 18/80 emerged with its special radiator (with a handsome polished surround) and with an MG Octagon fixed on its nosepiece. This feature was to adorn all subsequent MG models all the way through the next 28 years, and in a modified form, even to the MGB.

The MG Car Company had come into being, and in September 1929 MG moved again, this time into a factory at Abingdon (formerly the Pavlova Leather Works) and this remained its home until 1980. Unfortunately the abject economic climate that clouded the world following the US Stock Market crash meant that the market for cars, especially large expensive models, dwindled. This setback forced the move towards the development of a small, sporting, low cost model that was based on the Morris 8/33. This became the M Type Midget which remained in production until 1932 and produced 3200 examples.

Following the M Type came the first of the iconic small sport cars - the J type. The J1, J2 and J3 between them contributed almost 2500 cars, followed by the C and D types with 44 & 250 respectively. These we produced alongside the six cylinder Magnas and Magnettes which bring us to the point of the MG “family tree” which had branched off and saw the development of “Road and Track” era of MG Car Company.

The exploits of the Double Twelve M Type Midget, the C Type Midget in the early thirties, and the achievement of EX 120 to be the first 750cc Sports car to achieve over 100 mph, promoted a thirst for record breaking and international rallying. By the end of the first week of 1933 the MG Competitions Department had gone into top gear and had two prototypes being built of the now famous K3 Magnette. The prototypes were a curious mixture of engines and bodies as Abingdon played automotive “Meccano” with components of established models.

Page 31: NEW MG6 · 2018-04-23 · existence and progress of the MG name. Enjoy your time with the newest member of the MG “family”. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants

29

The restrictions placed on the motor sport activities precluded an official MG’s works team. Consequently, at the suggestion of Earl Howe, the second of the K3 prototypes was committed to the purpose of assembling a private /works supported attempt at the Mille Miglia. The team was to comprise of Earl Howe/ Hammy Hamilton, George Eyston/ Count Johnny Lurani and for the third car Henry Birkin and Bernard Rubin.

This daring raid on the very Mecca of Motor Racing with three completely new cars caused immense excitement in England. Incidentally, not commonly known was the assistance given by Enzo Ferrari for the participation of the MG team. At this time Ferrari was the Competitions Manager for Alfa Romeo, with Tazio Nuvolari (later to drive a K3), and a close friend of Count Johnny Lurani who often competed in a works Alfa.

The preliminaries and an actual account of the performance of the K3’s in this event related by Barre Lyndon in his book entitled Circuit Dust is compulsive reading. The chapter entitled ‘Fast Attack’ outlines the strategy adopted by the Earl Howe teams to counter the Maserati team and their support group of Fiats, who had erstwhile dominated this event.

The plans for the gruelling race dictated that one car be driven by Henry Birkin and Bernard Rubin as fast as possible from the start in an attempt to lure the Maseratis in their class, to drive faster than they may have wished.

The other two cars with George Eyston and Count Lurani and with Earl Howe and “Hammy” Hamilton would follow at a more conservative pace.

The strategy worked. Henry Birkin with Bernard Rubin broke the class record to the first control which was 228 miles from the start. The Maseratis unable to match the pace were effectively out of the running. This left the four Fiats as their only genuine opposition.

Unfortunately the leading K3 retired at Siena with a burnt out valve and the Eyston/Lurani K3 took over the lead.

At Ancona the 600 mile point Eyston/Lurani and Howe/Hamilton had swapped the lead often and their average speed (including stops) was 55.7mph. Although the K3s were doing well, the Fiats were not out of the running.

But despite the many delays with spark plug changes (Eyston/Lurani car used 157 plugs) both K3s finished ahead of their rivals. Their 1st and 2nd in class also won them the Teams Prize. It was the first time in history that this prize was awarded to a foreign team.

Page 32: NEW MG6 · 2018-04-23 · existence and progress of the MG name. Enjoy your time with the newest member of the MG “family”. We would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants

30

The year 1933 proved to be a series of highs and lows with a succession of problems for the K3 but other highlights followed with notable success in the Ulster Tourist Trophy and the Coppa Acerbo at Pescara.

The publicity gained by the Mille Miglia and the Tourist Trophy provided the Marque with the prestige that was needed to sell their cars. Cecil Kimber took the opportunity to use this to promote his sales. The rest of the 31 production K3’s were sold quickly at £795 each.

It is impossible to overstate the importance of the K3’s in MG history. Kimber’s vision and judgement would have seriously questioned had this highlight not succeeded. Today he is among the MG faithful a legend. The sad ending for this pioneer whilst attributed to the closure of the Competitions Department by Leonard Lord, was really due to his smart business initiatives and allegiance to his homeland. Miles Thomas, the newly appointed vice-chairman and managing director of the Nuffield Organisation saw Kimber’s actions as being non-conformist with the Nuffield Organisational policy.

Thomas advised Kimber to look for another outlet for his energies as he did not fit into the war time pattern of the Nuffield Organisation. This great man took the dismissal with quiet dignity. Kimber left with no recriminations and needless to say the episode did nothing to scar the dedicated and loyal work environment that for many years had been and remained the hallmark of the MG Car Company success.

CONCLUSIONWhilst we celebrate many significant Anniversaries in 2013, we should also reflect on the real MG icons. The K3 is folklore, but not alone. The Q type in Australia was significant as was/still is, the MG TC, and the MGB (even if the latter is included only for its longevity).

The introduction of the MG 6 to Australia is welcomed, but it still does not fill the gap left by the disappearance of the Worlds Most Favoured Sports car.

We all look forward to “Many Happy Returns” of this legend.

PERPETUAL TROPHIESTHE JOHN WRATTEN TROPHYThis trophy dates back to the first National Meeting held in 1970 at Sydney. At that meeting the Sydney MG dealers donated a trophy, which was presented to the Centre achieving the highest aggregate points score.

In 1971 the second National Meeting was held in Melbourne. Tragically, during the speed event at Calder, John Wratten sustained fatal injuries in an accident driving a MG-P-type. John was Secretary of the Victoria Centre and actively involved in the organisation of that National Meeting.

At the delegates’ conference following the meeting they were so moved, it was decided (with the approval of the Sydney MG dealers) that their trophy be renamed the John Wratten Memorial Trophy.

Over the ensuing years the scoring method has been modified by various “fudge factors” to give all Centres an equal opportunity for success.

The fudge factor takes into account each MG Centre’s membership numbers and the distance travelled to the meeting with a special allowance for crossing the Bass Strait.

Points are awarded as follows irrespective of the size of the class:

First place 9 points Second place 6 points Third place 4 points Fourth place 3 points Fifth place 2 pointsSixth place 1 point All other entrants receive 1 point

THE NUFFIELD OCEANIA TROPHY In the early 1950’s, Lord Nuffield commissioned and presented to the MG Car Club UK four prestigious trophies in order that each year the home centre might recognise the achievements of overseas centres in various regions – Europe, United States, South Africa and Oceania. The trophy is engraved:

“Nuffield Challenge Trophy” between all the Centres of the Club in the Pacific Area”.

The early awards records show the following:-

1953 New South Wales 1954 New South Wales 1955 Queensland 1956 New Zealand 1957 New South Wales 1958 New South Wales 1959 South Australia 1960 Victoria

After 1960 the Cup disappeared and with the demise of Nuffield/BMC, the competition for this trophy ceased. The trophy was found and returned in 1995.

While attending “MGs Down Under” in Perth in 1995, MG Car Club Chairman, Mike Hawke, and Overseas Director, Alan Kingwell, agreed that the Oceania Trophy would be reserved for Australia’s MG Car Clubs only and that the Australian Clubs would decide the method of presentation.

After nationwide consultations, it was agreed that the trophy would be awarded on the basis of Concours and Motorkhana results. Each club is represented by 2% of their nominated ownership numbers with a minimum of five and a maximum of twenty used for averaging. The total points scored by each club’s 2% is totalled and then averaged with the highest average the winner.

THE CECIL KIMBER CENTENNIAL TROPHYCecil Kimber’s daughter, Jean Kimber Cook, brought this trophy to Australia in 1988 from the MG Car Club in the UK.

It is awarded to the individual competitor attaining the highest points in all events. All events judged equally.

THE JOAN RICHMOND TROPHYInitiated by the Victorian Centre in 1989, this trophy is awarded to the female entrant who achieves the highest aggregate score over all events. The trophy is named to commemorate this Australian woman who achieved international success in motor sport, especially in MGs’.

THE JEAN KIMBER COOK PERPETUAL TROPHY FOR JUNIOR DRIVERSAt Freemantle in 1995, Jean Kimber Cook presented Harry Pyle with a scale model MGTC, which has been mounted to become a trophy for the most successful junior. The trophy is scored on the Motorkhana event with the “fudge factor”.

To qualify as a junior driver, entrants must be under 17 years of age as at 1/1/2013 and confirm entry on registration.

THE TC OWNERS CLUB PRE-WAR PLATE Presented by the TC Owners Club to recognise the effort of the owner of a pre-war MG who attains the highest aggregate points score (including the “fudge factor”).

THE CHRIS DODDS MEMORIAL TROPHY - MGB GT V8 REGISTER This trophy was inaugurated by a gathering of V8 Register members at the 1982 National Meeting held in Canberra and is in recognition of Chris Dodds’ contribution to the MG Marque and the V8 in particular.

Chris established the V8 Register in 1980 with the help of Steve Foldhazy of Sydney, with an aim to list all owners of the factory V8s in Australia and provide an interchange of technical information.

Chris was an enthusiastic member of the MG Car Club of Newcastle from 1969 and, in the period up to 1981, held the position of Register Captain, Secretary and Committeeman and was President for four years.

His tragic passing on 9 December 1981 at the age of 28 was a great loss to his family and to his many MG friends throughout the States of Australia and in the UK.

A Chris Dodds perpetual trophy also exists in the UK and is competed for annually by members of the V8 Register in the UK.

The Chris Dodds Memorial Trophy is awarded to the owner of the MGB V8 which scores the highest aggregate points in competition over the National Meeting weekend.

THE NEW ZEALAND PLATE This trophy was first presented at the 1977 National Meeting hosted by the NSW MG Car Club held in Katoomba. The trophy was brought over by a group of MG enthusiasts from New Zealand led by Bill and Gaye Baxter and is awarded to the T-series car with the best aggregate points before application of the fudge factor.

THE GOLDEN GUDGEON TROPHY The Australian T-Series Association (ATA) awarded the first Golden Gudgeon Trophy at the 1978 Perth National Meeting. Since that time ATA has traditionally presented a Golden Gudgeon Trophy at each National Meeting for the best aggregate point score achieved by a T-Series MG, excluding Super Specials.

In 1984 at the Tasmanian National Meeting, a perpetual Golden Gudgeon Trophy was created by the ATA comprising a gold plated T-Series conrod and gudgeon pin, mounted on a heavy wooden base. This perpetual trophy, like the former Golden Gudgeon trophies, is to be presented to the best aggregate point scoring T-Series MG, taking into account the National Meeting fudge factor.

THE HARD LUCK TROPHY Although not in the category of a perpetual trophy, one of the customs adopted at National Meetings is the presentation of a small token award to a club member who has had the misfortune to suffer some mishap on the way to the National Meeting.

Unfortunately there have been some extraordinary tales of disaster and it has sometimes been a difficult task for the host club to decide who indeed is the most deserving of the “Hard Luck Trophy”

WA MG OWNERS’ CLUB PERPETUAL OBSERVATION RUN TROPHYThe Observation Run has been an integral part of the competitive events schedule since MG National Meetings began. In 2012 in Hobart, two members of the MG Owners’ Club WA won the event and at the presentation dinner, it was discovered that the original perpetual trophy had gone astray.

MG Owners’ Club WA decided to remedy this situation and has had made a new perpetual trophy which will be amongst the trophies in Toowoomba. It is to be called the WA MG Owners’ Club Perpetual Observation Run Trophy.

2014 NATIONAL MEETINGSee you in Ballina, NSW 2014

At the Delegates’ Meeting in Hobart 2012 it was decided to allow the smaller MG Car Clubs to host a National Meeting without the usual Speed & Motorkhana events.

The reasoning was that the staging of speed events and motorkhanas is now beyond the scope and capabilities of many of the smaller MG Car Clubs. It is recognised that venues for these events are getting harder and more expensive to secure, particularly for many of the regionally based MG Car Clubs.

Additionally it was felt that it would be desirable to allow the larger MG Car Clubs some breathing space between hosting the traditional National Meetings that they so capably run.

As the Gold Coast MG Car Club originally proposed the idea of an alternative format National Meeting we are pleased to be able to host the 2014 MG Car Club National Meeting in Ballina, Northern NSW.

As such on behalf of the Management Committee and Membership of the Gold Coast MG Car Club I would like to extend an invitation to members of the MG Car Clubs of Australia to attend the 2014 MG National Meeting to be held in Ballina N.S.W.

As this will be the first national meeting to be run under a substantially different format, we are going all out to provide all MG Car Club members and owners with a first class experience. We’re not changing everything, there will be much that will be familiar to long time National Meeting attendees. We will however be approaching things in a different way but we’re confident that people will come away from the 2014 National Meeting having enjoyed a fabulous Easter Weekend of MG motoring.

Shortly we’ll be releasing further details of what we’ve planned. However one thing that we must tell you is that accommodation in Ballina is always in high demand. As such within a few weeks we’ll be sending to Natmeet Co-ordinators details of the available accommodation in Ballina. We strongly urge you to secure your accommodation as early as possible.
