The Maryland Center for Character Education at Stevenson University

(MCCE@SU) is planning the 2016 Awards Conference to honor schools through-

out MD who have instituted, developed, and are continuing comprehensive char-

acter education initiatives in their school communities. It is a goal of MCCE@SU

to promote Character Education throughout the state of Maryland. This year we

are encouraging every school throughout the state that has developed a compre-

hensive character education program to apply for this prestigious award. Our goal

is to encourage all schools that have a character education program to apply for

recognition and a MCCE@SU School of the Year award.

The recognized schools in 2016 will receive a specially designed School of the

Year Character Education banner which can be displayed proudly along with a

certificate of recognition from the Maryland Center for Character Education at Ste-

venson University. These recognized schools will be honored for their leadership

at the 2016 MCCE@SU Awards Conference on October 8th. However, it should

be noted that the Maryland Center for Character Education and Stevenson Uni-

versity strongly believes that the most important reward is the satisfaction of ob-

serving the strengthening of character in Maryland’s youth.

Hi all,

We hope each and every one of you are doing

great. We are trying very hard to spread our

message and we appreciate all of you for the

help in doing that. We've lost several kids to

suicide due to bullying of late and our hearts and

prayers go out to the loved ones and communi-

ties of these children. We vow to work even

harder to try and make this stop. We know that if

we all stay strong and keep pushing to get our

message to the world that we can save many of

these kids, so please keep working with us to do

that! Every pair of ears that hear our message is

a pair of lips to help spread it! Stay safe all!

National Nonprofit Seeking Nominations

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN CHARACTER EDUCATION

Character.org is now accepting nominations for the 2016 “Sandy Award,” as it is informally called. Each year, Character.org honors one individual for his or her long and steadfast commitment to the field of character education. The person so honored receives the prestigious “Sanford N. McDonnell Award for Lifetime Achievement in Character Education.” This award is named in honor of Sandy McDonnell, who was the driving force behind the resurgent character education movement in America. He dedicated much of his adult life to improving our nation’s schools and developing good character in others, especially young people. Among other things, Sandy instituted a company-wide ethics program as CEO of McDonnell Douglas Aircraft, founded and led CHARACTERplus in St. Louis and served as National President of the Boy Scouts of America. He was also the founding Chairman and inspirational leader of Character.org (then known as Character Education Partnership or

CEP) until his death in 2012.

Nomination Requirements:

1. All nominations are for individuals only (no groups).

2. The nominations are limited to a one page, single-spaced narrative summary that describes the candidate’s

long-term achievements and contributions relative to character education.

3. Please include specific details that show the candidate’s reach and impact of the candidate’s work.

4. E-mail addresses and phone numbers for both the candidate and the nominator are required.

5. Self-nominations are not accepted for this award.

Selection Process and Presentation of Award:

The winner of this year’s award will be chosen by a committee comprised of previous

Sandy Award winners and Character.org leaders. The winner will be announced in July. He or she will receive transportation, two-night hotel accommodations, and free registration for the 2016 National Forum on Character Education, where the award will be presented. The event takes place Oct. 14-15, 2016 at the Grand Hyatt

Washington in Washington, DC.

Important Information:

• All nominations must be received no later than Tuesday, May 31, 2016.

• Each person may nominate only one candidate.

• Self-nominations and group nominations will not be accepted.
