New lenders bringing ‘diversity’ to aircraft financingIndustry experts add note of caution as US groups oppose Ex-Im deals

EADS, parent company of Airbus, confirmed it would cut 5,800 jobs from its military and space divi-sions over the next three years in response to dwindling European military budgets. The reductions, presented to union leaders last week, represent around 5% of its global workforce of 133,000 people and are part of a broad re-structuring plan that will refocus group activities around its com-mercial aircraft business, which generates nearly 70% of total revenues and more than half of all profits. When it first entered service, the A340 opened true long-haul operations, expanding the Airbus wide-body family. The A330 and A340 have since become the best-selling wide-body family of all time.In an ever-changing world some flag carriers like to keep their fleet age very low, it’s natural that a proportion of their aircraft will move to the used aircraft market, the A340 is no exception. The A340 Family of three variants, the A340-300, -500 and -600, is now available at very competitive lease rates which makes them economically affordable prospects for carriers looking at long-haul opportunities, especially as they await delivery of new-generation aircraft, such as the A350 XWB.

A340 appeal The A340 appeal is based on its availability, commonality with other Airbus types, its performance as well as its excellent payload accommodation. Now that older B747-400s are well into their retirement phase, the availability of significantly younger A340-600s equipped with modern avionics, make them the smart interim upgrade. The four-engined A340 is not subject to “Extended-range Twin-engine Operations” (ETOPS). Operators can fly the most direct routes and operate efficiently from ‘hot and high’ airports, potentially off-limits to other aircraft. Furthermore, the A340 fits seamlessly alongside other Airbus aircraft, especially the twin-engined A330, with which it shares the same modern technology, such as the cockpit, fly-by-wire architecture and systems. The A340 cabin can comfortably accommodate from 280 to 440 passengers depending on the model. Most A340s available in the market today are fitted with full Audio-Video-On-Demand (AVOD) IFE system in all classes, which is today’s standard. Moreover, when it comes to making the most of cargo revenue opportunities, the A340 can carry as much cargo as direct competitors if not more, with 18 to 25 tonnes of revenue earning cargo capacity.

The bottom lineSo, has the A340 performed as intended by its designers? The answer is definitely ‘yes’ because today’s A340 is a mature product delivering high reliability. With its very competitive ownership costs, its passenger and cargo revenues, its availability and its comfortable cabin, the A340 can be considered an efficient long-haul solution in today’s market.

AIRCRAFT & ENGINE NEWS

Air Canada announced its mainline narrowbody fleet renewal plan that includes com-mitments, options and rights to purchase up to 109 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The new aircraft will replace Air Canada’s existing mainline fleet of Airbus narrowbody aircraft, creating one of the world’s youngest, most fuel efficient and simplified air-line fleets. The agreement with Boeing, which is subject to completion of final docu-mentation and other conditions, includes firm orders for 33 737 MAX 8 and 28 737 MAX 9 aircraft with substitution rights between them as well as for the 737 MAX 7 aircraft. It also provides for options for 18 aircraft and rights to purchase an ad-

ditional 30. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2017 with 2 aircraft, 16 aircraft in 2018, 18 air-craft in 2019, 16 aircraft in 2020 and 9 aircraft in 2021, subject to deferral and acceleration rights. Air Canada continues to evaluate the potential replacement of its Embraer E190 fleet with more cost efficient, larger narrowbody aircraft that are better suited to its current and future network strategy. Consistent with this strategy, the agree-ment with Boeing provides for Boeing to pur-chase up to 20 of the 45 Embraer E190 aircraft currently in Air Canada’s fleet. The E190 aircraft

exiting the fleet will be initially replaced with larger narrowbody leased aircraft until the airline takes delivery of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. The company will be re-viewing various options over the next six months for the remaining 25 Embraer E190 aircraft including continuing to operate them or replacing them with a yet to be determined number of aircraft in the 100 to 150 seat range.

American Airlines signs large Re-gional Jet purchase agreements with Embraer and Bombardier

American Airlines signed agreements with Bombardier and Embraer to purchase 90 new 76-seat regional jets. Consistent with Ameri-can’s Plan of Reorganization and Merger Agreement, these aircraft will provide much improved economics for the airline as they will replace smaller, less efficient 50-seat regional aircraft scheduled for retirement. American has firm orders for 30 Bombardier CRJ900 NextGen aircraft, with options for up to 40 more. The CRJ900s will have 12 First Class, 32 Main Cabin Extra and 32 Main Cab-in seats, and the firm order of CRJ900 aircraft will be operated on behalf of American by PSA Airlines, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of US Airways. American expects to begin taking delivery of the CRJ900s in the second quarter of 2014. American also has firm or-ders for 60 Embraer E175 type aircraft with options for up to 90 more. They will feature 12 First Class, 20 Main Cabin Extra and 44 Main Cabin seats, and American expects to begin taking delivery in the first quarter of 2015. The company will determine which re-gional carrier will fly the E175s at a later date. Both the CRJ900 and the E175 will fly in the American Eagle livery.

Nexcelle delivers first major nacelle component for GE Aviation’s Pass-port Business Jet engine

The Nexcelle joint venture of Aircelle (Sa-fran) and GE Aviation’s Middle River Aircraft Systems – which is building engine nacelles for the next generation of integrated pro-pulsion systems – has marked a key program milestone by shipping its initial major pro-duction component: the no. 1 inlet for GE Aviation’s Passport business jet engine. This represents a double achievement, as the initial Passport inlet also is the first element to be completed at the new GE Composites factory in Ellisville, Mississippi, which was inaugurated earlier this year as GE Aviation’s latest U.S. production facility. The milestone Nexcelle air inlet was transported from Ellis-ville to GE Aviation’s Peebles Test Operation in Ohio, where it will be integrated with a Passport engine for propulsion system icing

Bombardier enrolls Eurolot’s three newest aircraft in Q400 Smart Parts Program

Eurolot S.A. of Warsaw, Poland has reaf-firmed its confidence in Bombardier’s Smart Parts program by enrolling its three newest Q400 NextGen aircraft. Eurolot, which took delivery of the new aircraft on October 29th, 2013, now has a total of 11 Q400 NextGen aircraft enrolled in the program. The Smart Parts agreement is customized to meet Eu-rolot’s specific operational and performance needs and will continue to provide the airline with competitive and predictable component exchange and repair costs, as well as superior quality and availability of key components,

tal Corp., the company’s financing and leasing unit, reported that he was seeing “more diversity in lenders than ever.”

He said that the leasing market had “evolved during the past decade from five equally competitive lessors to several times that many today”. Capital markets are continuing to expand as a source of funding for both U.S. and international airlines as well as leasing companies. All of this is possible, he said, due to bal-anced global air travel demand and a replacement market driven by higher fuel costs and the attractiveness of new, fuel-efficient airplanes.

But Zolotusky warned that the role of ECAs as a funding source could be under threat, pointing to the example of the US, where members of the conservative Tea Party movement and the Club for Growth anti-tax group, have questioned whether the Ex-Im Bank, the US ECA, should have a role in aircraft financing.

surface settings to simulate takeoff and land-ing conditions. The low-speed model current-ly being tested is a 0.05% scale model of the baseline 777X, measuring about 4.22m (166 inches) long with a wing span of 3.92m (154 inches). Hundreds of sensors are embedded in the model to measure pressure to determine the in-flight loads as well as provide valuable diagnostics of the aerodynamic performance of a given design. Low-speed testing at the Qi-netiQ facility is expected to last approximately five months. Testing also will be conducted next year at the Boeing Transonic Wind Tun-nel in Seattle to further validate 777X high-speed performance projections.

Finnair initiates long-haul fleet fi-nancing

Finnair signed a Memorandum of Under-standing with global aircraft leasing and financing company GECAS (GE Capital Avia-tion Services) on the sale and leaseback of two Airbus 330 aircraft and two ordered Air-bus 350 aircraft. The value of the arrange-ment is approximately €320m. The financial arrangement is a part of the long-haul fleet renewal program, in which the current Air-bus 330 and 340 fleet will be replaced by the new generation of Airbus 350 aircraft. The divestment of the existing A330 and A340 fleet as a whole is not expected to have a significant impact on earnings in 2014 and 2015. The sale and leaseback agreements for the two A330 aircraft are expected to be concluded in the first half of 2014 and for the two A350 aircraft in H2 2015, when the first two A350s ordered by Finnair are delivered. The lease term for all four aircraft is 12 years on average and the lease terms have extension options. The proceeds from the arrangement will be used to finance Fin-nair’s future fleet investments. Finnair has ordered eleven A350s and has options for eight additional aircraft.

Until the full integration of American Airlines and US Airways – which will see the combined airline retaining the American Airlines name – US Airways and its regional carriers will operate as oneworld affiliate members, under the American umbrella. They will offer oneworld’s full range of services and benefits – although some may be phased in shortly after US Airways joins. EADS presents restructuring plan for future Airbus Defence and Space Division

EADS presented a restructuring plan on December 9th, for its future Airbus Defence and Space Division (Airbus DS) to the European Works Council. This presentation follows a decision by the EADS Board of Directors in July this year to consolidate the defence and space businesses of the Group into one new Division and to rebrand EADS into “Airbus Group”. Overall, EADS plans to reduce (headcount) 5,800 positions at Airbus DS and in Corporate / Headquarters functions until the end of 2016. Up to 1,500 positions will be offered at Airbus and Eurocopter for redeployment of impact-ed employees. After non-renewal of temporary contracts (around 1,300) and applica-tion of additional voluntary measures, final redundancies are estimated in the range of 1,000 – 1,450 employees, subject to the achievement of the voluntary measures.

The Group also intends to enter into negotiations with its works councils to seek agreements on labour cost reductions which could help mitigate the social impact of the restructuring plan. As part of the overall headcount reduction, Corporate functions and services will be slimmed down by around 500 positions. EADS is now launching the work with the Works Councils to find the right social measures and so-lutions for all impacted employ-ees. The restructuring plan for

the defence and space businesses of the Group will result in a substantial consolida-tion of sites across Germany, France, Spain and the United Kingdom. For cost and operational reasons, the new Division – Airbus DS – will simplify and consolidate its legal structures. The new Division will start operating at executive level as of January 1st, 2014. After the consultation process with the works councils, expected to be con-cluded by mid-2014, the three entities – Airbus Military, Astrium and Cassidian – will be fully integrated and operational at all levels as Airbus DS.
