What’s going to happen in a typical class session?

Onsite, most classes at the Academy incorporate these components:

Lecture | Demo | Activities | Check-In | Critique | Assignment | Break

Lecture | Introduce key information. Avoid talking for too long. Students can only listen for about 10 minutes before they zone out. Break info into mini-lectures and intersperse with check-ins and practice activities.

Demo | Demo one thing at a time and break long demos into mini-demos. Let students practice each new skill before moving on to the next demo.

Make sure students can see and hear. Get students up out of their seats if needed.

Activities | Give opportunities for students to participate and engage with the material and one another. Have students practice what they’re learning.

Check-In | Find out what students are learning. Ask targeted questions and watch students to check for understanding. Have them summarize, paraphrase, demonstrate or explain key points.

Critique | Give constructive feedback to help students see what they are doing well and what they can improve. Limit your feedback to the most significant points (aim for 3-5). Get students to participate in critiques.

Assignment | Give assignments that help students achieve the bigger goals of the class (course learning outcomes) on your syllabus. Give clear directions – in writing when possible – on the board or a handout. Explain what you expect and how you will judge their work.

Break | Give students and yourself a break to refresh and revive - usually 15 min. near the middle of a 3-hour class, or two 15 min. breaks in a 6-hour class.
