TEACHERS' DAY CELEBRATION AT NEW HORIZON PUBLIC SCHOOL

RALLY FOR OUR RIVERS stOn 1 September, 2017, New Horizon Public School was smattered with the

various shades of Blue. This was done in observance to bring about mass

awareness of the crisis our river bodies face. The teachers of the school

spoke to their individual classes about the importance of preserving nature

and how the young future of our country can bring about a change, one

person at a time. We at New Horizon Public School believe that if there is

anyone who can transform the thinking of our society, it is the children. The

students of New Horizon Public School had earlier participated in Save

Kaggadaspura Lake Project and now they wish for everyone to realize the

importance of water in our lives.

thOn 5 September, the teachers of NHPS were treated to a series of events

they will never forget. Teachers' Day, 2017, started off with a melodious

rendition of “Ae Kuda” by the students of Std X. Dances, bands, skits and

interactive events that followed were thoroughly enjoyed by the teachers.

The treasure hunt conducted for the teachers, had them desperately

searching for clues. Basketball and Volleyball matches between students and

Ganesh Chaturthi was celebrated in our school this year with great joy and

excitement. Ganesha pooja followed by a homa was held in the auditorium.

We not only thanked the lord for all his blessings but also prayed for the

betterment of our school. We were provided with delicious prasadam which

the students relished thoroughly. We hope that Lord Ganesha will listen to our

preparing for it two months prior to the given date.

My father helps us get ready for the puja. We normally dress up in our

traditional attire. My mother makes yummy steamed modak and chicpea

sundal. After the puja, we visit a Ganesha temple in our neighbourhood

which is beautifully decorated I love seeing big idols of Ganesha as it

brings a festive mood in the air.

We also celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi in our apartment with our friends and

family. It is the most awaited festival every year.

Ganesha is my favourite God as He is the God of good beginnings, prosperity

and the remover of all obstacles. I wake up early in the morning to help my

mother make Ganesha Rangoli in front of our house. We also decorate the

entrance of our house with fresh mango leaves and flowers.

HOW I CELEBRATE GANESH CHATURTHI!

STJANMASHTAMI – UKG – 1 SEPTEMBER

The UKG students presented a musical dance show with glimpses into the

life of Lord Krishna. Perfect performances, graceful dances, synchronized

movements and the attractive costumes were the highlights of the show.

Scenes like the birth of Krishna, natkhat Krishna, maakhanchor and

dahihandi were beautifully portrayed.

Continuous cheering by the parents boosted the morale of the children who

were all determined to put their best foot forward and present a spectacular

show.

'Heritage Foundation of Art and

Culture' on the launch of 'India wins

Freedom'. The painting exhibition for

children from various schools was

held at Venkatappa Art Gallery, thKasturba Road, Bengaluru from 14

thto 17 August. Yuvanth was the

youngest participant.

TREK TO EBC

Ever since I was a young boy, I have loved trekking. My first trek was to

Edakkal Caves in Kerala, when I was four years old and I have been going on

treks since then. My latest and greatest trek so far has been my trek to EBC.

EBC is the abbreviation of Everest Base Camp and as the name suggests, it

lies at the base of Mount Everest. The trail to the Everest Base Camp

lies in Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal. It lies at a height of 17,592 feet.

My mother and I left for EBC on April 8. We left Bangalore and took a

connecting flight to Nepal from Delhi. We reached Kathmandu, the capital of

Nepal. After reaching our hotel, we met three other people who were part of

our expedition and our group leaders. The next day, after reaching the

starting point, a place called Lukla by taking a small plane, we started the

trek. We reached a place called Phakding by evening. The trek from Lukla

to Phakding covered a distance of 9 km. The next day, we left for a place

called Namche Bazaar, which was 11 km from Phakding. Namche Bazaar is

essentially a market place, and it is the last place to buy required equipments,

as no other stores are available after Namche. It is also the last place where

one can stay in a decent lodge. All the places after this are shacks lacking

even a washbasin. Anyway, we stayed in Namche for a day to get

'acclimatized'. This means getting used to the altitude and climate to

minimize the risk of getting Altitude Mountain Sickness.

The next day onwards, we covered a distance of 12 km daily. We trekked

from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche which is famous for it's beautiful

monastery. The next day, we trekked from Tengboche to Dingboche, where

I saw snow for the first time in my life. We stayed there for a day to get

acclimatized. We left for Lobuche after that.

However at the 17,460 foot mark, I started experiencing breathing problems.

It felt like someone was grabbing my neck as I walked. This was a result of

low oxygen level, coupled with fatigue and tiredness. I still pushed on

however, determined to reach the top. My efforts paid off, and I reached EBC

at three in the afternoon. It was truly the best and happiest moment of my

life. We went back to Gorak Shep after an hour and a half, and spent the

night there.

The return back to Lukla was completed in three days. We covered an

average of 20 km per day. We took a flight back to Kathmandu, where we

did a little shopping. As I was the youngest and completed the trek despite

my breathing problems, my guide got me a native dagger called a khukri.

All in all, I feel that this trek was the best and the toughest trek in my life.

I pray that I get a chance to go back, but with one small change. I will

climb Mount Everest.

On the way, we got caught in a heavy snowstorm, which was followed by a

dust storm. We had to first reach a place called Gorak Shep,

eat our lunch and then reach EBC.

Life was boring. Unemployment was definitely taking a toll on Gordon's life. It

had been two whole years since he had left his workplace. He needed some time

off to figure some things out. Now, he was desperate for any job.

Gordon had sent his resume to various offices and firms. There had been no reply,

until one day, he received a call. He had been short-listed by a company and he

needed to appear for an interview. On receiving the news, Gordon was on cloud

nine. He had long awaited this. The next week, he left for the company's head

quarters, feeling very confident indeed. Being a large elephant, it did take him a

lot of time to get there. He asked the receptionist whether he could enter the

office. He told her his name and the time of his appointment. The receptionist

read through her diary and then told Gordon to proceed to the first room on the

left. Something about the office gave Gordon a sense of danger. He ignored it

and continued walking. He saw a poster that read, “Elephant needed, no

experience necessary”.

He began feeling that something was wrong. He asked Leo what information he

was supposed to provide. Leo's blunt reply was, “The location of other elephants,

of course”. He could not betray his community! The elephant in the other room

suddenly took an interest in the ongoing topic. Gordon declined the job offer and

said that he could not spy on members of his community. Leo pointed a gun at

Gordon's face and told him that he had no choice. The elephant in the other

room wanted to help, but he was terrified. With a swift swing of his trunk,

Gordon swatted Leo's gun and ran towards the door. His heart raced and he

began to sweat. Leo immediately recovered and started to run towards Gordon.

Out of nowhere, a huge elephant smashed into Leo. He lay unconscious on the

floor. It was the elephant in the other room.

Nothing made sense to Gordon. The other elephant, Nelson, explained that

Leo lured elephants through his attractive job offers and took over their lives

when they least expected it. The company was a slaughterhouse of elephants.

Nelson was new there and when he realized what Leo was going to do to Gordon,

he knew that he had to save him. Leo did not let his other employees, who were

all elephants, resign. He threatened their families until they had no choice but to

work for him. Humans are not trustworthy, Gordon should have known. The two

elephants escaped. The very next day, there was an article, that read – “Bengal

tigers wanted, No experience necessary”. The article was published by the same

company. The animals had no power against humans. All they could do, was

watch their friends get hung on walls and get sold in other countries. After all,

they were humans. It would take a lot more than the extinction of a few hundred

species of wild life, before they finally realized that something was wrong! The

fate of the animals lay in human's hands. Of course, they were doomed.KuvalX

Rheya clutched her head in her hands and moaned. A fight with her best

friend and a sound berating from her teacher, all on the same day! The

innumerable assignments with looming deadlines and the constant

backstabbing by those who called her a “friend” did not help calm her frayed

nerves. She could still hear their taunts, shouts and malicious laughter. The

images filled her head, sapping her will to move on. In a blink of an eye, her

surroundings collapsed around her and she stood facing a pale, old man. He

had a scraggy beard and fierce, yet kind eyes. “Welcome, my dear”, he said.

“Wh. . who a re you? , she mumb led , “and where am I? ”

“Those answers you do not require, my dear”, he said kindly. “Why am I

here?”, she asked boldly. “Ah! That I shall gladly answer. Do you see this jar

in my hand, dear?,” he asked. He lifted a large jar, with intricate carvings on

it. “This is Pandora's jar”, he said. She stood there, trying to recall her Greek

mythology when he said, “This jar once contained the spirits of death,

sickness, misery and suffering. But Pandora opened this box and let them

lose. They torment mankind even to this day,” he whispered. “But do you

know what remained inside?,” he asked. “Hope”, I said softly. “Yes, very true,

my dear, the spirit of Elpis or hope, which continues to fuel man towards his

destination. Just like a car, which can be refueled innumerable times and

continues to move forward, immaterial of whether it reaches its destination

or not, man is forever fuelled by hope, so that he may move ahead in life.

He gently placed the pithos in her

hand and whispered in her ear,

“Would you open it and let hope

free!” Before she could blink, the

man vanished and she stood up

with a start. She was in her room.

Her mahogany table, with books piled upon it, looked just as she had left

it. Perhaps she had been hallucinating after all. Except for one thing.

Pandora's jar now lay beside the heap of books. At that moment she decided

that she would never, ever, open the jar and let hope free and neither should

we.

HOPE

Gordon entered and saw a man wearing a hat with a leopard print, casually

sitting on his chair. The man Leo, greeted Gordon and almost immediately started

talking about Gordon's job profile. He was supposed to provide Leo with

information. The pay was very good as well. The interview seemed to be going

on well until Gordan's sixth sense kicked in. He noticed the paper holder. It was

made out of an elephant's tusk. Different parts of the elephant were displayed

on the walls of the entire room as trophies. Gordon began to feel claustrophobic.

The Department of Biology organized an educational field trip to Mysore for the students of II PU on the nd2 of August, 2017. Visits were organized to the Central Food Technological Research Institute, Avadhoota Datta

Peetham, popularly known as Sri Ganapathy Sachidananda Ashram and the Regional Natural History Museum.

The objective of the trip was to ingrain important scientific knowledge in the students.

The morning session was covered at the Sri Ganapathy Sachidananda Ashram at the

foot of the Chamundi Hills. There the students got to see crystals, gems and artifacts of

rare kinds in the Viswam Museum. The Bonsai Garden in the Ashram had an exquisite

collection of more than 450 carefully shaped Bonsai trees which have been aesthetically

displayed based on Indo-Chinese architecture. The Bonsai Garden is said to be the

largest in India.

The second destination was the Regional Natural History Museum, which is a

museum with exhibits on plants, animals and geology of the southern region

of India. This particular visit proved to be extremely informative as it provided

a unique opportunity to learn about nature and the natural world through a

judicious mix of models, specimens, charts and thematic exhibits. The

museum has an impressive gallery with different sections such as biological

diversity, life through the ages and a discovery center.

The visit to CFTRI, proved to be an extremely informative one.

CFTRI is one of the most reputed national laboratories of India under CSIR.

The session conducted by DR D Kumar gave an insight to all the 18

departments of the Institute, the research prospects and the significance of

the research in Food Technology. The students were taken around the campus

and to a few Departments like the Plantation Products, Spices and Flavour

technology.

The trip was a memorable one for all the students. The visit succeeded in piquing curiosity and instilling knowledge

in the students. The well planned and executed trip was a fulfilling one to both the students as well as the faculty

Nursery children went to the

of the month “Community Helpers”.

Children were briefed about hygiene

and table manners by the owner

himself. To further enhance their

knowledge, terms like “captain”,

“chef” and “steward” were explained

beautifully. The importance of eating

vegetables was stressed upon. To

make vegetables look interesting, a

few chefs demonstrated some

vegetable carvings. A welcome drink,

delicious sandwiches and a healthy

salad were given to all. At the time

of leaving, all the children were

presented with a stationery kit as a

token of appreciation by the

restaurant.M

It was heartening to watch parents forgetting their work to be

in school for their children.The atmosphere in the auditorium

was brimming with excitement and anxiousness. It was three

wonderful days of parents and children showcasing their talents

in various forms; be it dance, drama and music.
