Dear Families,

The New Heights 2013-2014 school year schedule is packed with Adventure, Arts & Culture, STEM and Leadership Initiatives that are available to all youth in 5th grade through high school from southern New Hampshire and Maine. New Heights staff incorporates research and best practice in youth development into a variety of experiences that are both fun and challenging.

We believe that ALL youth have the potential to be the current and future leaders of our community.

Our programs provide opportunities for youth to make choices, fail in a safe environment and ultimately experience success—under their own power, on their own terms—so they learn to manage themselves and to sense, empathize and react to others. These skills are critical for developing emotional intelligence and successfully navigating all that life has to offer.

Best,

New Heights staff members are highly skilled and educated in outdoor education, psychology, fine arts, education, and youth development.

Staff members maintain CPR, defensive driving, and Wilderness First Responder Certification and several employees hold Master’s degrees in their given discipline. Staff-to-student ratios are 1 to 10 for programs and 1 to 5 for overnight expeditions.

This combination of experience and expertise provides the highest quality programming for all youth involved.

LEADERSHIPINITIATIVES

Design Your Own Adventure ExpeditionNew Heights staff are expert trip leaders and can work with school staff to design expeditions that incorporate service learning or academic components worthy of academic credit. For example, students have hiked and worked with Zion National Park Rangers on much-needed service projects and researched adaptations of fauna while kayaking the Channel Islands off the coast of California.

Portsmouth High School Peer LeadershipFor over twenty years, New Heights has been collaborating with Portsmouth High School on a student-led community service program. We are pleased to add several new components designed to inspire students to be catalysts of positive change and become the community leaders of the future. Based on the Community Giving Circle model, students will choose a theme for their learning and service. Activities will include visits and mentoring with a wide array of community leaders with expertise in College and Career Communications, Civic and Social Community, Creating and Sustaining a Vibrant Community and Take Good Care: Managing Stress.

Team Building WorkshopsWorking well in groups requires focus under pressure, effective problem solving, conflict resolution, empathy, respect and clear communication. New Heights staff will meet with you to plan objectives, outcomes and design specific activities for your school- based or adult groups. Team building activities often include high ropes course challenges, rock wall climbing, visual arts activities, creative writing, and complex problem solving games. Prices start at $350 and vary depending on activities and group size.

“We learned responsibility, teamwork and most important– the meaning of friendship. We went from being Individuals to one single team that can overcome anything.” Final Journal Entry 2012 High School Utah Hiking Trip

“New Heights teaches leadership and group building traits that would help anyone

get through day to day life better.“

The New Heights In the Know Speaker Series discussions are geared for parents, grandparents, coaches or others who work with youth in pre-adolescence and adolescence.

In the Know brings together panels of experts on topics chosen by parents for a facilitated discussion so that together we can be informed and do our best to help our kids gain the confidence and independence they need.

It definitely is not easy, but research is clear that kids who have parents who actively communicate and support them will live healthier, happier lives. The volume of information, technology, and societal pressures parents must navigate with their children as they grow can be overwhelming.
