decisions awaited on tiering(science) and teacher
assessment(DT,drama) (assumption is against both
unless essential)
• More content, more emphasis on literacy and numeracy

• Remaining GCSEs (pending Ofqual consultation on
what is in and out and awarding bodies assessment of
which titles are viable
• Any existing GCSEs not reformed by then will disappear
• All GCSE grades numerical from 2019 (2017 and 2018
have mixed economy)
• Similar approach to these subjects in terms of
assessment and content

Grading of new GCSEs
Three points “fixed” to existing grades in 2017, pegged to
achieve same proportion for a similar cohort
• Bottom of 4 aligned to bottom of C
• Bottom of 1 aligned to bottom of G
• Bottom of 7 aligned to bottom of A
• Top 20% who get 7 and above will get 9, approx. 3%
• Grade 5 positioned in top third of marks for C and
bottom third of B

Accountability: KS4 from 2016• Headline measures: best 8 (En + Ma + 3 Ebacc + 1
other), Progress 8 (best 8 with VA measure), % of Eng &
maths C+, e-back, but not valid until KS2 reforms have
worked through, and impossible until Y7 2016
• English and Maths double weighted in 8
• Best of lit and lang counts for English x2
• Only pupils with KS2 scores get progress 8 score
• Schools with 6+ pupils with KS2 scores will have a
progress 8 score
• IGCSE Eng and maths don’t count 2017 onwards
(unless reformed to meet GCSE criteria)
