NEW GATEWAY TO MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES
Grampians Medicare Local (GML) has developed a new mental health navigation tool which is now available on their website. GPs, health and welfare providers and the community are now able to search for mental health services by location and need.
Counselling Connect and Kids Connect are the new names for GML funded counselling services. The new names bring most of Grampians Medicare Local’s mental health referral options under one name and reduce the stigma associated with “mental health”.
Medicare Locals are transitioning to Primary Health Networks. No matter what the outcome for the Grampians region, the Counselling Connect brand provides a seamless transition for people in our region needing mental health early intervention and timely counselling support. GML encourages health and welfare providers to become familiar with the gateway and provide them with feedback via their website. Improvements will continue to be made based on your feedback.
STUDY ON YARRIAMBIACK AGED
A La Trobe University-backed survey in the Yarriambiack Shire is studying the impact of community and support services on the wellness of its older people. The ASPIRE study is exploring the services and supports that enable older people to age well in their rural community. La Trobe research fellow Dr Rachel Winterton who is heading the investigation, said there was currently no large Australian study that examined the issues that promoted and maintained wellness among older people in rural locations.
Information is being sought on the types of services and support that older people use and value. This is includes community groups that they might be involved in; retail stores and businesses available to them; what sporting and recreational opportunities they have as well as health services used.
They are looking for people who are 65 or older and living in the Yarriambiack Shire to participate in a 30-minute telephone questionnaire. Anyone wanting to be involved in this important study can contact the project manager Turi Berg on (02) 6024 9778 or email [email protected]
The study has university ethics approval and is conducted in partnership with the Victorian Department of Health, University of Queensland, the Queensland Government, South West Hospital and Health Service, UnitingCare Queensland and Canada’s University of Alberta.

IN MEMORY OF ABC OPEN ONLINE PROJECT
This project celebrates the lives of people who died in 2014. As one year finishes and another begins, it’s time to remember the people in our lives that have died in 2014 and pay tribute to them.
Contribute a photo and short story about your loved one. The story only has to be 300 words or less.
Can you find a photo of the person who has died that reminds you of a story from their life? It could be a photograph of a moment you shared together. In your story, you might like to think about where you were, what you were doing, the smells, the sounds, the words spoken and how that made you feel. Or the photograph might be of a time where you weren't there but it still brings back memories. Perhaps it reminds you of their funny laugh or their daring adventures.
Lives are made up of thousands of little moments. Don't feel you need to write a list of achievements. Choose one of those moments to write about - it could be your favourite memory or the one that makes you laugh. Please don't be offend if we edit your contribution before publishing, to make it suitable for publishing across different mediums.
Submit your photos and stories here.

AFTER HOURS PROGRAM
Grampians Medicare Local and Ambulance Victoria are now trialling an integration of services to provide better after hours care. This new initiative means both organisations are working with Nurse on Call and afterhours GP helpline to ensure every caller in the after hours period receives the right care in the right place and time.
The trial assists patients who have been triaged by Ambulance Victoria as non emergency patients and do not require an ambulance. These patients will be given advice to enable them to stay home or will be recommended to see a GP if required. If the call is received in the after hours period, and the patient needs to see a GP, the call will be connected to the GML afterhours service to manage their care.

AUSSIE KIDS ARE INACTIVE KIDS (AND THEIR PARENTS AREN’T MUCH BETTER)
The release of the National Heart Foundation of Australia’s Blueprint for Active Australia is a call to all Australian governments to implement our 13-point plan to get the nation moving. The evidence demands that Australia acts quickly to increase physical activity levels. Sedentary behaviour and inadequate physical activity are hazardous to human health.
Children are particularly at risk. The evidence shows an alarming trend, that eight in 10 Australian children do not meet the national guidelines of 60 minutes of physical activity per day.
