We are just over a week away from the 2020 Education Conference-BuildingMomentum: Coming Together to Create Our Future. The online event will be taking place next Friday and Saturday October 23-24th. You can click here to view an updated and completed description of theagenda. As you'll see the dynamic agenda will allow the NAMI-NYS familyto come together and provide resources to help us collectively take the firststeps towards recovering from the traumas of 2020 as well as inspire us to riseup and start shaping our future. The conference will begin by exploring the first steps towards healing and our pathforward as we work to address and overcome the grief and trauma of COVID-19, racialinjustice and the economy as well as understand the current social determinants of mentalhealth. For our opening session we are thrilled to welcome NAMI’s Associate Medical Director,Dr. Christine Crawford and Dr. Wilford Farquharson, co-chair of the NYS-OMHMulticultural Advisory Committee who will discuss the impact of COVID-19 and racialinjustice on our collective mental health, the consequences of mental health disparitiesand how NAMI can be part of the solution. This important conversation will be followedby Sydney Faith Rose, LMSW, CHHC, ERYT, Founder of Relational Thriving, whowill explain how to address the grief we are all experiencing from the loss of our sense ofnormalcy (and for some the loss of a loved one or a job) and detail how to overcomethese stressors and start healing; Sydney will also lead us in a meditation exercise. The second session will feature Dr. Merrill Rotter, Special Assistant to the New YorkState Office of Mental Health Commissioner, who will explain how the COVID-19outbreak both exposed long-existing negative social determinants of mental health aswell as created a series of new ones. He will detail how the New York State Office ofMental Health aims to address these and how NAMI is involved in these efforts. Dr.Rotter is also an expert on reforming the criminal justice-mental illness interface and willdiscuss the role of law enforcement in social determinants of mental health.

You are not going to want to miss Friday evening's Coming Together to CelebrateResiliency and Hope, where we will be presenting our 2020 Leaders of Mental HealthAwareness Awards to: Lily Cornell Silver is the host of the new IGTV series Mind Wide Open. Lily is the onlydaughter of music industry manager Susan Silver and the first-born daughter of the lateSoundgarden / Audioslave singer, Chris Cornell. Like her dad, Lily has struggled withanxiety and depression throughout her life and launched the show as a tribute to him onwhat would have been his 56th birthday. The show features Lily discussing mental healthissues with leading experts, her peers with lived experience and celebrities. The show isquickly garnering a lot of attention including in Rolling Stone magazine. AJ Mendez is the New York Times Bestselling author of Crazy Is My Superpower, co-founder of Scrappy Heart Productions, mental health advocate and speaker, and formerchampionship wrestler with the WWE. She is an ambassador to The Jed Foundation andthe National Alliance on Mental Illness. AJ wast the recipient of NAMI’s 2018Multicultural Outreach Award. She is a writer, making the Black List’s inaugural LatinxTV List in 2020. AJ’s work with NAMI includes her Discovering My Superpower video. Metta World Peace is a former NBA all-star, 2004 Defensive Player of the Year, authorof the book No Malice and subject of the Showtime acclaimed documentary Quiet Storm-The Ron Artest Story. Metta and his family have become vital members of the NAMI-NYS family and have been instrumental in a landmark initiative of introducing NAMISignature programs into the Queensbridge housing project. Metta was also recently aguest on an episode of NAMI-NYS Perspectives. Lily, AJ and Metta are all the definition of resiliency, as all have overcome tragedy,hardship and a lifetime of mental health challenges. Each of them are also finding newand innovative ways to tell their stories and spread mental health awareness. Interspersedbetween the award presentations will be performances from some of the mosttalented members of the NAMI-NYS family, Will Foley, Megan Moran, CaityGallagher and Jocelyn Archer. There will also be a reflection of hope fromLashawn “Suga Ray” Marston.

The conference will also highlight the most cutting-edge research developments anddemonstrate how we all have a role in partnering in research and explaining how researchis our hope for a more mentally healthy future. Saturday will begin with the presentation of the 2020 Excellence in Research Award toDr. Barbara Cornblatt, who then detail her groundbreaking work on early identificationand intervention of schizophrenia. That will be followed by Partnering in Research where Luke Kramer of the STARRCoalition will discuss ways to partner in research and the role that NAMI advocates playin advancing research. For the second part of the session we have assembled a group ofthe world’s pre-eminent researchers Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman of the NYS PsychiatricInstitute, Dr. Donald Goff of the Nathan Kline Institute, Dr. Jeffrey Borenstien from theBrain and Behavior Research Foundation and Dr. Dwight Dickinson from the NationalInstitute of Mental Health who will provide updates on the latest research developments.. Our aim is that this session will inspire you to embrace the hope that research holds andhow that hope starts with you.

ZERO SUICIDE

The conference willonce again have afocus on our goal ofZero Suicide on bothdays. Saturdayafternoon will featureour Zero Suicidesession, which will

focus on Recognizingand AddressingWarning signs ofSuicide During COVIDand Social Isolation.Garra Lloyd Lesterand Pat Breux of theSuicide PreventionCenter of New Yorkand Lisa Furst ofVibrantNYC willdiscuss this crucialtopic by looking at

specific prevention strategies in three age groups; children and adolescents, adults andseniors. The stories and the work of suicide surviving families will be showcased throughout theday on Friday. Our Using Multimedia to Increase Our Voices session will feature adiscussion with Bobby Chase, the director of the award-winning short film Jacob whichchronicles the day he lost his brother to suicide. The Thinking Big and Taking Actionsession will feature Roy and Lucille Ettere discussing how they are working to bothhonor those lost to suicide and support their friends and families by creating memorialgardens throughout New York State. Our 2020 Leader of Mental Health Awarenesshonoree Lily Cornell Silver, has made the experiences of suicide surviving families afocal part of the discussions she has on her show Mind Wide Open.
