Young Enterprise Employability Masterclass
With the Year 10 Work Experience fast approaching in July, the students participated in a practical workshop to prepare
them for the world of work; a perfect opportunity for students to consider their skills and personal qualities that
employers value.
Through practical hands on activities the mastercalss explored themes such as
personal branding, employability skills, evidencing life experiences, CVs, covering
letters, preparing for an interview and high growth career sectors.
EY Foundation
The EY Foundation visited The Elmgreen School to run an employability skills workshop to support our Year 10
students to develop their aspirations and their work related skills and knowledge. Twenty four excellent volunteers
from across industries participated in group activities with the students.
The activities offered our young people the opportunity to present
themselves confidently in person (verbally and non-verbally), to
demonstrate an awareness of essential employability skills and
how these can be applied in the workplace, and to show
understanding of their own strengths.
Our Year 10 students were excellent candidates for these
workshops and participated wonderfully.
Duke of Edinburgh Expedition
W ell done to the fantastic Blue Bronze group for completing their Assessed
Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition. They all navigated through the
countryside of Sussex using their maps and compass to guide them. All students
passed their expedition

‘Divided’ by Tim Marshall
A Geography Department Book Review
We inhabit an age of walls, the journalist Tim Marshall observes in Divided. Half of all border
barriers erected globally since 1945 have appeared in this century. “Within a few years, the European
nations could have more miles of walls, fences and barriers on their borders than there were at the
height of the Cold War.
Marshall takes us on a tour of some of the most relevant border divides in the world: India’s border
with Pakistan and Bangladesh, the Israel and Palestine border in the West Bank, the new borders
across the Middle East and those running across Europe. The effectiveness of barriers are explored,
whilst also looking into our desire for social and political division, the ‘us and them’ thinking and
how it fits into the 21st century
Divided also opens up the role of borders on an internal level, such as gated communities in South Africa and the US.
Here, Marshall examines how levels of exclusivity can spiral, creating physical and psychological division. In China, it is
the entire population who are excluded, with the ‘Great Firewall’ keeping 700 million citizens detached from foreign news
and media outlets. Overall, this book brilliantly deconstructs the walls – both, electronic, external and internal of the
future.
This book is now in stock at in the school library. Other notable reads include Prisoners o f Geography and Worth dying
for: the power and politics of flags, which are both also available.
Volunteers needed for preparing and
serving refreshments at We Will Rock You
Are you able to help with refreshments at the summer school
musical production on the evenings of 10, 11 and 12 July?
We need lots of help with preparing fruit for the cast and crew as well as serving audience refreshments before the show ,
in the interval and clearing up at the end.
We also need donations of sweet and savoury finger snacks to sell .
Helping out at the show is a great way to meet other parents and support the school.
If you would be able to help please contact Liz Myers at : [email protected] or on 07584 751372

Speed-Stacking
Recently, we held a speed-stacking competition for Year 7 students in the library. We had able assistance from Year 9’s, who took charge of the practice tables, the timer table and the leader board.
Students demonstrated their speed stacking skills by up-stacking (building the cups up) and then down-stacking.
The fastest student was Daniel, 7W1 in a record time of 4.382 seconds. Well done, Daniel!
