Academic training> PhD in Economic Sociology. Stanford University> MPhil in Sociology. Oxford University> MSc in Sociology. London School of Economics

Interest areas> Inter- and intra-organisational networks> Organisational behaviour and theory> Corporate entrepreneurship> Venture capital industry

About himAlex Makarevich is an Assistant Professor in the Department of People Management and Organi-sation. He holds a Ph.D. in Econo-mic Sociology from Stanford Uni-versity, a M.Phil. from Oxford University, and a M.Sc. from the London School of Economics.

Alex studies how network embed-dedness affects organizational performance.

This work integrates insights from networks literature and organiza-tional ecology to arrive at a more accurate account of organizational performance and advance theo-retical integration of the two re-search streams. Papers originating from this research examine how firms’ market niche and pattern of alliances interact to affect firms’ survival chances and the relation-ship between organizations’ net-work centrality, status, and survi-val in the market.

Previously, Alex studied corporate entrepreneurship at multinational companies. That research covered a number of topics, ranging from the use of knowledge networks in support of corporate ventures to organizational environment within the parent company, and resulted in a series of papers published by the KnowledgeSource research centre.

Alex is an ad hoc reviewer for the Academy of Man-agement Journal and the American Sociologi-cal Review. He has pre-sented his work at the annual meetings of the Academy of Management,

the American Sociological Associa-tion, and the Strategic Management Society.

Academic training> PhD in Business Administration and Management. Università Bocconi> Master of Science in Accounting and Management Control. Università Bocconi

Interest Areas> Management Control Systems (MCS) Design> Organisational and Behavioural Aspects of MCS> Budgeting> Performance Measurement and Evaluation> MCS and Inter-organisational Relationships

About herPaola holds a PhD in Business Administration and Manage-ment (Università Bocconi, Italy) and a Master in Accounting and Management Control (Università Bocconi, Italy). She is part of the ACFAI Accounting Group at SDA Bocconi School of Management. She has been Visiting PhD Candi-date at RSM, Erasmus University (The Netherlands). She is currently Assistant Professor in the Depart-ment of Financial Management and Control at ESADE.

Paola believes that accounting research into companies’ mana-gement control systems (MCS) design and use can help unders-tand managers’ behaviours and outcomes. Her research focuses on the determinants and the behavioural outcomes of compa-nies’ top-down bottom-up budget process procedures. Her current cross-sectional field research shows that companies use a variety of budget process procedures made up of combinations of design elements, and that their procedu-ral choice significatively depends on internal rather than external factors. Her recent case study also found that managers’ behaviour

during budget negotiations, seen as resistance to changing the budget proposal, is influenced by factors related to the characteris-tics of the company budget process procedure. Her ongoing research examines the determinants of budget process procedure modifi-cations and the effects of design choices on companies’ budget process efficiency.

Paola is a member of the European Accounting Association. Her working papers have been selected for discussion in international conferences. She has been involved in international research projects on MCS in inter-organisational relationships, funded by the Char-tered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), and on the Integrative Finance Organization, funded by IBM. She has also ser-ved as organisational committee member for the international conference “Sustaining Organiza-tional Combinations”, sponsored by Accounting, Organizations and Society (Università Bocconi, Italy, 2005).

Academic training> PhD in Business Administration. Jacobs University Bremen - Germany> Bachelor and Master in Psychology. University of Bonn - Germany

Interest areas> Knowledge transfer in work teams> Implications of the aging workforce for organisational behaviour> Intergenerational learning

About herDaniela Noethen recently comple-ted her PhD in Business Admin-istration (Jacobs University Bremen, Germany) and holds a Diploma in Psychology (Universi-ty of Bonn, Germany, equivalent to bachelor plus master). She pre-viously spent a year studying Psychology at the University of British Columbia (Canada). She has joined ESADE as a Assis-tant Professor in the Department of People Management and Orga-nisation.

Daniela Noethen believes that knowledge management becomes increasingly important in times of imminent demographic change, and that organisations must grasp the knowledge of large waves of retiring employees lest huge costs be incurred. Her dissertational research dealt with knowledge transfer in teams as one means of preventing knowledge loss. The results of her research into predictors of knowledge transfer suggest that antecedents often differ in their influence depending on the transfer behaviour exami-ned (sharing or seeking knowledge) and the level of analysis (indivi-dual or team) (under review in

International Journal of Human Resource Management). In ano-ther study of intergenerational knowledge transfer, she found that there is only slightly more knowledge transfer from older to younger employees than without such an age difference between employees, and only slightly more knowledge transfer in age-diverse teams. This suggests that in order to protect retiring employees’ knowledge from being lost to the organisation, knowledge transfer must be supported more heavily.

For her future research, Danie-la Noethen is interested in models for measuring knowledge transfer and knowledge loss, means of pre-venting knowledge loss other than knowledge transfer in teams, and catalysts and obstacles to interge-nerational learning in organisa-tions. She is convinced that multi-level approaches and longitudinal field studies will help to show the way to knowledge loss prevention.
