Course Goals or Overview:

British Literature is a survey of major literary work and authors emanating from the England and the United Kingdom from Anglo-Saxon times to present. This course will give students a broad overview of the major literary works, authors, cultural and historical developments, and intellectual and aesthetic trends during that time. Students will learn to interpret these literary and creative works critically through careful reading and analysis, and learn to express their ideas about them through clear writing.

Learning Objectives/Outcomes: At the end of this course, the student will 1 Identify key ideas, representative authors and works, significant historical or cultural events, and

characteristic perspectives or attitudes expressed in literature of different periods or regions.

2 Analyze literary works as expressions of individual or communal values within the social, political, or cultural contexts of different literary periods.

3 Develop, interpret, and express ideas through verbal and written communication 4 Develop an awareness and improve their control of written and verbal expression in various genres. 5 Evaluate choices and actions and relate consequences to decision making both in- and outside of the

college classroom.
