hiHIS institution is one of the five State Normal Schools under the.i· direction of the Massachusetts Board of Education. It was estab-lished by the Commonwealth, with the co-operation of the' citizens

of Bridgewater, and received the first class September 9,1840. 'fhe numberof pupils who have been admitted is 2499; gentlemen, 859; ladies, 1640.'l'he number of graduates is 1506; gentlemen, 529; ladies, 977,

., Candidates for admission, pl'oposing to qualify themselves to become schoolteachel's, must have attained the age of seventeen years complete, if gentle­men, and sixteen years if ladies, and be free from any disease or infirmitywhich would unfit them for the office of teachel'." The Board of Education, by a vote passed January 9, 1866, stated thedesign of the School, and the two years' Course of Study for the StateNormal:Schools, as follows:

" 'fhe design of the Normal School is strictly professional; that is, toprepare, in the best possible manner, the pupils for the work of organizing,governing, and teaching the public Schools of the Commonwealth.

The Four Years' Course of Study.

Graduates from this Course are in special demand for the best positions.The studies are so arranged that graduates from the shorter course may

Aims and Principles. - The ultimate object of the Normal School is tomake the Normal pupil a skilled instl'ument for the education of children, or,in other words. to make him, as far as possible, an educator.

The aim of this school is to give the pnpil a definite idea of the trneobject, the principles, and the methods of edncation; a thorough knowledge

of the objects and subjects he will need to teach, with such a degree offacility and skill in the application of these principles and this knowledge,as will enable him to organize and control his own school, and to educ.atehis pupils.

The design of education is two-fold, - first. to secure the right aetion ofthe mind; sccond, the acquisition of knowledge. The products of rightmental activity are mental power and knowledge.

The teacher as an educator must know what the different mental powersare, the order of thcir development, and how they are called into right activ­ity; and he must know each pupil as an individual. He must also know theclW'erent kinds of knowledge, the onlel' of their acquisition, and the methocl oftheir acquisition.

Right habits of observation, of thought, of feeling, of action, are to beestablished.

A C01l1'se of study is required for the training of the mind. The courseneeded for this purpose is a series of objects and subjects for study arrangedaccording to the ordcr of mcntal dcvelopment. 'filis course of study, fromthe nature of the mind, must be in two divisions, - an elementary coursefor training the mind in gaining a knowledge of facts about individualobjects; and a scientific course, for training the reflective faculty in acquir­ing general ideas and truthS, and knowlcdge systematically arranged. Theelementary course must be so conducted as to prepare the mind for thescientific course.

. The principles of education are derived from the study of the mind.The methods of teaching and training are determined by these principles.Having a knowledge of the mental powers, and of the objects and subjectsto be taught, there must be a selection from these of what the pupil canunderstand and most needs to know. Ideas and thoughts are to be gainedfrom the objects of thought. The right arrangement of ideas must beobserved.

Methods. - All lessons are conducted upon the topical plan. The samemethod is employed with both objects and subjects. Each is considered firstas a whole, and then in its parts. 'rhe topics for the study of an o"bject arearranged in the natuml order. A snbject is presented as a whole by ciearlydefinillg it to show what it includes. It is then analyzed into its maindivisions, and each division is outlined in topics logically arranged.

The lessons thus analytically arranged are assigned to the class, show­ing them what to study, and in what ol'der, and each topic is taught to theclass at the time the lesson is assigned so fal' as is necessa1'y to teach them howto study it so as to be able to teach or present it to the class. Nothing is tobe done fOl' the p~tpil which he can do fOl' himself.

After preparation, the class are thoroughly examined upon the lesson.The outline of topics is first stated to present the lesson as a whole. Thetopics are then taught to the class by different pupils, the class and theteacher criticising the teaching. Or, the pupil presents the topic to theclass, other pupils and the teacher make additions, and the class a~d teacher

Each day a review of the preceding lesson is malIc, in its outline amImain points, to fix the facts in the mimI by repetition, and to conncct thetopics with the lesson of the day. Each main division of a subjcct isreviewed, in its outliue amI main topics, to teach the relation of the topics.The subject as a whole is rcviewed before leaving it, in its outline and mainpoints, to teach all the parts in their relations.

The teaching of the topics by the pupils secures the most thorongljpreparation of the lesson, for the pupil must know the subject, the logicalarrangement of it, and how to teach it, or fail. It givcs thc pupil cOlUlllane!of himself, makes him self-reliant, dcvelops his illlliyj(luality.

All the class exerciscs, from the beginning of thc course, are conductedupon thc principlcs and by the methods that havc bccn illllicated. Aftcr thepupils havc been trained in this 'way, to teach philosophically, in as fnll ameasure as the time will allow, they COllle in the last tcrm of the course tothe study of psychology, and there lcarn the philosophy of their work byfinding in the study of the mimI, thc principles which underlie the methodsthcy have learned to use.

Text-books are used as book!! of relerence in the preparation of lessons.Statemcnts of important principles and. definitions are requircd to bememorized verbatim. The committing of tcxt-books to memory is avoided,the students being trained to depellll upon objects of thought rather thanupon words.

Students are expected to govern themselves; to do withont compulsionwhat is required, and to refrain voluntarily from all improprietics of con­duct. Those who are unwilling to conform cheerfully to the known wishesof thc Principal and his Assistants, are presumed to be unfit to becometeachers.

It is not decmed necessary to awaken a feeling of emulation, in orderto induce the scholars to perform their duties faithfully. Faithful attentionto duty is encouragcd for its own sake, and not for the purpose of obtainingcertain fnarks of credit.

Examinations, both oral and written, are made each term in everystudy, and the result in each must be satisfactory to enable the pupil toad\'ance to the studics next in order. Only those pupils who have satisfac­torily passed all the examinations in the prescribed course of study receivethe diploma of the Institution. The demand for graduates of both sexes, tofill good positions in the public schools, is grcater than the school can atpresent 9I.lpply.

This institution has a valuable LIBRARY of works for general referenceand reading, to which the pupils have daily access, Text-books in nearly allthe ?'equi?'ed studies are furnished to. students without cha?'Ue. It also hasApPARATUS, excellent in quality, for the illustration of the more importantprinciples in the physical sciences. It has a CABI~ET of minerals andother specimeus used in teaching Natural History.

The LABORATORY is furnished, so that each member of the class has aplace at the chemical tables, and all perform experiments at the same time.

The ART Roo)! is handsomely fitted up and furnished with the bestkind of furniture and instruments, with a large number of thl\ finestexamples of casts, models, and flat copies, affording excellent facilities forteaching in the various departments of drawing, and furnishing a constantstudy of art to the members of the School.

'l'UITION IS FREE to all who comply with the condition of teaching inthe schools of Massachusetts, wherever they may have previously resided.Pupils who fail to comply with this condition are charged a reasonable sumfor tuition. A fee of $2 00 is paid by each pupil at the beginning of theterm, for incidental expenses.

For the assistance of those students who are unable to meet theexpenses of the course of instruction in the school, the State makes anannual appropriation of eight hUl1llred dollars, one-half of which is distrib­uted at the close of each term among pupils from :Massachusetts who meritand need the aid, in sums varying according to the distance of theirresidences from Bridgewater, but not exceeding ill allY case $1 50 a week.'1'his aid is not furnished during the first term of attendance. It is expectedthat those who do not complete the prescribed conrse of study, and thosewho do not teach in the public schools of Massachusctts, will refund anyamount they have received from the bounty of the State. Applieations forthis aid are to be made to the Principal in writing.

The State has erected upon the school premises a very pleasant andcommodious Boarding Hall, which will accommodate all the pupils whodesire board. Two students occupy one room. Eaeh room has two closets.is carpeted, supplied "'ith furnitnre, including mattress and pillOWS, heated1>y steam, lighted by gas, and thoroughly ventilated. One wing of the hallis occupied by the gcntlemen.

The lIall is IIIH]er the charge of the Principal, who resilles in the houseanll boards "ith the students. No pains are spared to make the Hall ine\'ery respect a home for the pupils. It has a beantiful location, and everyroom is pleasant. A Heading Room, supplied with newspapers. periodicals,and some of the best new books, and a Gymnasium, are provided for thedaily use of the students.

The Hall was built and furnished by the State. The boarders are topay the current expenses, which include board. fuel, light, washing. allll theexpense of keeping the Hall and its furniture in good condition. The aimis, to make these expenses not more than $80 a term, or $4 a week, forgentlemen; and for ladies not more than $75 a term, or $3 75 a. week.Boarders who remain for any period less than half a term will be charged25 cents a week additional. The expense thus fm' has not exceeded the sumspecified.

$40 for each gentleman, and $37 50 for each lady, at the beginning ofthe term; and the same amount for each at the middle of the term. Theobject of this payment in advance is to secure the purchase of supplies atwholesale cash prices, thereby saving to each boarder much more than theinterest of the money advanced.

Jiurntturt.

Each boarder is required to bring bedding, towels. napkins and napkin­ring, and clothes bags. Each occupant will want, ordinarily, four pillow­cases, three sheets, two blankets or their equivalent, and one coverlet for adouble bed. It is required that every article which goes to the laundry bedistinctly and indelibly marked with the owner's name.

Pupils living on the line of the railroad, and wishing to board at home,C:1n obtain tickets for the term at reduced rates.

The SCHOOL-YEAR is divided into two terms of twenty weeks each,including a recess of one week near the middle of the term.

The present term will close on 'l'UESDAY, July 2. 1878, with publiccxercises of Examillation and Graduation, commencing at 9}4 o'clock, A.M.
