The commissioning of the Land van Cuijk
Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for
cogeneration and partial fl ow treatment on
March 5, 2015 has considerably reduced the
plant’s energy consumption. The changes have
also increased the effi ciency of the reprocessing
of the combined gas stream as well as the
recovery of phosphate as required by the Chain
Agreement regarding the Phosphate Cycle. The
project was developed through collaboration
between Attero and the Water Board.
Attero has a plant that converts landfi ll gas into
energy via a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant.
The leachate is partially purifi ed and then fed to the
WWTP. The water rejected by the WWTP is now
being pumped to the phosphate extraction plant
before joining the leachate for de-ammonifi cation.
The construction of this bypass treatment plant
for phosphate recovery and nitrogen removal
together with the combined processing of gas
and wastewater has increased the sustainability
of the plant and has reduced its operating costs.
Logisticon Water Treatment designed and built
this bypass treatment plant in collaboration with
NuReSys and Grontmij. The plant comprises
a stripper for pH correction, a struvite reactor
for the recovery of phosphate according to the
NuReSys® principle, de-ammonifi cation with
Demon® installation according to Grontmij’s
design and a plate separator.

Arisu in Çivril, Turkey, is the production
facility of Ariza, a company based in
Helmond, the Netherlands. This plant
produces apple concentrate. The
production process generates a large
volume of wastewater that must be
treated.
Because the existing facility did not
have suffi cient capacity to meet the
demand resulting from the increase
in production, Arisu decided to update
the facility. It chose to employ physical/
biological treatment to meet Ariza’s
high quality standards. Last year, two
large lagoons were renovated and
one lagoon was equipped with four
aerators provided by Logisticon Water
Treatment. Due to the presence of,
among other things, polyphenols
from the apples (pigment), it was
not possible to meet the discharge
requirements. Therefore, last year
Ariza contacted Logisticon to address
this specifi c problem and for a start
hired a DAF fl otation plant.
The plant now performs perfectly
through additional dosing of ferrous
chloride and polymer into the feed of
the installed DAF fl otation plant. After
fi ne-tuning the purifi cation process,
the facility was fi nally able to meet the
discharge requirements at a capacity
of 40-50 m3/h. The fl otation plant was
eventually purchased.

Mobile MBR extraction unit for AtteroAfter a fi re at Attero in Landgraaf, Logisticon Hire was able to deliver a temporary mobile
membrane bioreactor (MBR) extraction unit to the site within a week. This MBR rental
unit proved to be a good experience because it became clear that it reduced the energy
and chemical consumption considerably when
compared to the old plant that had burned down.
In particular, the cleaning of the membranes could
be kept to the bare minimum.
The MBR has a capacity of 5 m3/h that can be
increased if required in the future to 10 m3/h.
Thanks to Logisticon’s expertise, Attero Landgraaf
has also found a defi nitive solution to eventually
process leachate using an MBR installation. The
new MBR plant contains an extraction tank for two membrane modules, a permeate
tank, measuring equipment, valves, pumps, piping and controls. The whole process is
integrated into an insulated 20ft container, which also includes a railing on top, enabling
safe working at height and a higher extraction tank with removable hatches.
The advantage of this implementation is
that the plant is tested completely and as
such supplied ready to plug & play. This
means that it can be installed on-site with
the minimum of effort and it can start to
operate immediately.W

Croda starts to reuse wastewater
After nine months of extensive trials,
Logisticon Water Treatment built a
completely new installation for Croda.
This installation employs ultra-fi ltration
(to remove all the suspended solids in
the wastewater) and reverse osmosis
(to remove the salts and to reduce
the hardness of the water). This
ensures that the water supplied to the
demineralization process contains far
less salt and bicarbonate enabling a
90 percent saving in the consumption
of caustic soda and hydrochloric acid.
Construction of this plant required
an investment of around two million
euros. The Croda plant is expected to
pay for itself within six to seven years.

Croda based in Gouda, the Netherlands,
is a producer of specialty semi-
fi nished products based on natural
oils and fats. It launched its innovative
membrane fi ltration plant in May 2014.
This plant purifi es the wastewater
the company produces for reuse,
after demineralization, as cooling
water, process water and steam.
This reduces the annual groundwater
use by 500,000 cubic meters, greatly
reduces the use of chemicals, reduces
CO2 emissions considerably and also
greatly reduces the amount of salt
discharged into the surface water.

Supplying membrane installations for HumViThe Vitens drinking water company is very progressive in the fi eld of recycling
waste streams. The company won the Aquatech Innovation Award in 2014 for
its Humvi technology that recycles 100% of waste streams resulting from the
decolouration of drinking water. The HumVi technique is an effi cient application
of ion exchange membrane technology in combination with various membrane
techniques that makes it possible to transform groundwater into perfect drinking
water.
Logisticon Water Treatment helped Vitens to
design and realise this membrane technology.
This latest technology operates in batch mode
at 50 bar to concentrate and scrub the humic
acids from the water with the use of special
nano-fi ltration membranes, which were in the
past responsible for the colour in the water. In
addition, Logisticon has built an 80-bar RO system
to convert the residual water from the fi rst unit
into a concentrated salt stream so that it can be
reused in the ion exchange regeneration.

The humic acid produced is upgraded to a product that is
now being used in the agricultural sector as a plant and
soil conditioner. Other applications such as replacement of
antibiotics in animal feed are still being investigated.

Reverse Osmosis Plant 50m3/h and 40 m3/h for Induss II in GhentCommissioned by Induss, a Belgian joint venture between Antwerp Water Works (AWW)
and Farys (the operational arm of the municipal umbrella organisation for water supply
in Flanders - TMVW), Logisticon Water Treatment has been tasked with the expansion
of Reverse Osmosis (RO) capacity at an existing manufacturing location. This Induss II
location, near the Rodenhuizedok in Ghent, produces four different qualities of process
water from surface water (supposedly dock water) for businesses in the neighbourhood
and ‘mobile pick up.” Because a new customer was connected and thus the need for
cooling water increased, Induss II needed to expand its production capacity.
The capacity was increased by a new RO plant that is quite special in so much that it can
work in both single- as well as double-pass RO mode. This results in a system that can
produce either 90 m3/h (50 + 40 parallel) or 40 m3/h of water when operating in double-
pass (serial) RO mode.
Furthermore, in this RO plant, which is constructed on a single robust stainless steel
frame, Logisticon has also been able to include ‘Low Fouling’ membranes with enlarged
spacers. This minimizes the cleaning (CIP) frequency.

IOI Loders Croklaan, which makes
food products based on vegetable
oils and fats, has for many years been
‘ahead of the curve’ in the sustainable
development of its products. The
building of a wastewater recycling
plant at the production facility in
Wormerveer marks the next level in this
development. Currently, wastewater is
still discharged into the sewer system;
however, the goal is to reuse it for
boiler water and demineralised water
for palm oil fractioning and refi ning.
This will also lead to a reduction in the
wastewater discharged, a reduction in
the salt discharged, thanks to the use
of softeners, and the procurement of
drinking water.
Logisticon Water Treatment won the
contract for this turnkey installation,
which will be commissioned
and integrated with the existing
demineralized water system.
The water will be purifi ed using a
membrane bioreactor (MBR) based
upon the Berghof BioPulse® concept,
followed by reverse osmosis (RO) that
will clean the water to the required
quality for reuse. The installation,
including a biological 600-m3 tank,
has an average capacity of 360 m3/
day. Loders Croklaan also chose
the BioPulse® concept because of
its lower power consumption when
compared to conventional MBR
systems. The installation is expected
to be operational in April 2015.

Themista® and Ephyra® are two new technologies that are able to reduce the amount of
sludge released during wastewater treatment and maximize the production of biogas.
These innovative sludge digestion technologies were developed by Royal HaskoningDHV
and are recognized as being highly effi cient and robust with lower operating costs. Both
technologies can be used to pre-treat sludge in existing digestion installations; e.g. in
wastewater treatment plants where additional sludge has to be processed or where there
is a goal to extract more energy from the sewage sludge. Ephyra® can also be used as an
independent digestion process. To determine the full potential, the next phase is to carry
out a pilot study under practical conditions. With the results, it is possible to establish
business cases, within which the technical and fi nancial feasibility of the technologies can
be further substantiated.
The pilot study is being carried out at the Kralingseveer sewage treatment plant in Capelle
aan den IJssel and at the WWTP in Tollebeek, it is fi nancially supported by the National
Offi ce for Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO). The project is being led by a consortium
consisting of STOWA, Hoogheemraadschap Schieland and Krimpenerwaard Zuiderzeeland

Process water softening for Sensus in RoosendaalSensus BV Roosendaal produces food ingredients
(Inulin) from chicory roots. The production and
refi ning phases require a signifi cant quantity of
water. Hydro Business B.V. has been awarded
the contract to construct and operate a new
groundwater treatment plant in order to meet this
demand. Logisticon Water Treatment has in turn
received the order to produce a turnkey project
including design, engineering and complete
realisation of this plant.
The groundwater is purifi ed into softened process water that meets the quality standards
of the applicable water legislation. Broadly speaking, Logisticon Water Treatment’s task
is to design and build a complete water treatment plant including water wells with
well pumps, cascades, 4-m diameter de-ironization fi lters, 2.2-m diameter softeners
and storage tanks with the connecting piping and pumps. The fact that 80-300 m3/h of
purifi ed water is used in a food-processing environment, required careful consideration
to be given to the type of pipe, construction materials and coatings to be used.

The Nieuwegein Hoogheemraadschap
Stichtse Rijnlanden (HDSR) wants its
WasteWater Treatment (WWTP) plant to
start producing electricity. Previously, three
large on-site aerators, which consumed a
huge amount of energy, were used to aerate
the wastewater. In order to design an energy-
effi cient plant, HDSR devised a formula that
included the construction and energy costs.
The effect of this formula on the design has
been extensively studied by Logisticon and
has led to even more energy savings than
expected. The UAV-GC contract is therefore
proving to be an ideal stepping stone to
achieve the power generation aim; it uses
the creativity of the experienced designer
in the form of Logisticon Water Treatment
within the framework as defi ned by HDSR.
An additional hurdle that fi rst had to be
overcome was that the aeration tank could
not be emptied. Therefore, the aeration
grids needed to be submergible and also
retrievable for inspection and maintenance.
Logisticon Water had already built a de-
ammonifi cation plant (Demon®) for the
WWTP in Nieuwegein. This plant removes
the nitrogen from the wastewater (see
also Logisticon Tour 16). The water board
chose this new technology because of its
ruggedness, low investment and low power
consumption. These two projects will
contribute to the construction of an energy
plant for HDSR.

Sustainable expansionA number of measures have been taken as part of our
ISO14001 environmental management system. A start was
made by introducing digital invoices and purchase orders in
order to reduce paper consumption and reduce transport
movements. Energy-ineffi cient outdoor
fl oodlights have been replaced by LED
lamps and several charging points have
been installed for electric bicycles and
cars. We also invested in our own pickling
system, watertight cleaning area, chemical
storage and cleaning systems in 2014.
Our own pickling plant has met some of
our goals including a reduction in transport
movements, which has reduced our energy
consumption and also our CO2 emissions;
three days have been gained because
the stainless steel parts can be pickled
and passivated completely automatically.
Quality control and the quick response to
client change requests have also been improved thanks to this
investment.
With a watertight cleaning area combined with chemical
storage and an extensive cleaning area, it is now possible to
clean both systems and membranes faster and in a way that is
safer for both people and the environment.
