Thank you so much for the opportunity to have served as your 2012-2013 Student Forum

Officers! Last July, we were so excited to have been elected as your officers and returned

home knowing we had been elected to very important tasks to be the voice of all clinical

laboratory students nationwide.

With your help, we were able to complete many tasks towards the charges set before us by

the ASCLS Board of Directors. We are so thankful for your support and encouragement

throughout the year. We were so proud to see the hard work and dedication of your con-

stituent societies’ Student Forum Chairs and Regional Reps as represented on their Board

Reports of activities completed. Their service to the students they serve has been tremen-

dous and we are truly grateful for their leadership abilities!

We look forward to seeing you in just a few short weeks at the 81st ASCLS Annual Meet-

I’m running for ASCLS Student Forum Chair because I want to make a difference for students. I

want students to know that ASCLS is here to help them with anything they need. I’m a very or-

ganized person with enough determination and patience to see things through. I enjoy helping

people in any way possible, and as Chair, I would be doing just that for students throughout the

nation.

1. In what professional, educational, or community service activities have you participated?

Please indicate what, if any, leadership positions you held in these activities.

I’m currently the President of the Student Clinical Laboratory Science Association at Georgia

Regents University (formally the Medical College of Georgia), and the Student Forum Chair of

ASCLS-GA. Through these positions I have been able to participate in numerous educational

and community events. I’ve coordinated a drive to raise supplies for the Boys and Girls Club of

Augusta, and fundraisers for the Melanoma Research Foundation. I’ve also participated in fund-

raisers for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Five of my classmates and I had the privilege of

attending this year’s ASCLS-GA Annual Meeting in Lawrenceville, GA. There, we thoroughly

enjoyed the speakers and gained some excellent knowledge. Prior to attending the meeting, I

coordinated and participated in fundraises to help us pay for our expenses. In the end, we raised

enough to pay for their registration fees and give everyone an extra $30 for gas/food. I’m also

the event/volunteer chair for the Students Society for Stem Cell Research at Georgia Regents.

Through this I’ve been able to help plan events for student members to serve the Augusta, GA

community.

2. If you were to become an ASCLS Student Forum officer, what would you like to accomplish on

behalf of all MLS/MLT students?

I would like to increase the communication and student involvement with ASCLS. ASCLS has a

lot to offer students, but I don’t think people realize it. I want to create a way to help students.

with their Boards, and increase the number of students renewing their membership.

Candidate for Student Forum Chair I am interested in running for the Student Forum Chair in order to pursue my

passion for medical laboratory science. I am excited to have completed the MLS

program at BGSU and honestly love the profession. I would like to continue the

relationships and networks that I have created through being an ASCLS-OH

board member.

1. In what professional, educational, or community service activities have you participated? Please indicate what, if any,

leadership positions you held in these activities.

I currently hold the one year term student director position for ASCLS-OH. I am the chair of the student forum, a mem-

ber of the promotion committee, the nominations committee, and the members committee. I wrote articles that the AS-

CLS-Ohio newsletter published.

Professionally, I have worked at Flower Hospital for four years and have recently accepted a generalist Medical Laborato-

ry Science position. In addition, prior to my new position I made sure all laboratory personnel were current on their cer-

tification—including phlebotomists, medical technicians, and medical laboratory scientists. Further, I am one of three

trainers at Flower Hospital for phlebotomy and central processing.

Educationally, I have aided Catherine M. Shaffner, MLS(ASCP)SH, Bowling Green State University’s hematology profes-

sor in phlebotomy lectures for three years. I do this because I enjoy the rewards of training students in phlebotomy. I

also was the leader of the BGSU group that won the ASCLS video contest.

2. If you were to become an ASCLS Student Forum officer, what would you like to accomplish on behalf of all MLS/MLT

students?

Funding is important to accomplish certain tasks; therefore, I will continue fundraising for the proceeding student fo-

rum. Further, I will encourage all MLS programs to create a club through their universities to demonstrate the profes-

sion’s importance and to influence undecided majors. I had a wonderful experience at the MLS student bowl in Colum-

bus, OH and would encourage all states to host a similar event for surrounding students. I will encourage further educa-

tion and make scholarships readily available. Most importantly, I will help facilitate communication among MLS stu-

dents through which everyone would feel welcome and more knowledgeable about the profession.

Candidate for Student Forum Vice-Chair I am applying for this position on the national board because I want to make a differ-

ence. I would like all the students who are attending college for MLS and MLT to

know that the hard work and long hours they are putting in to become a Medical La-

boratory Professional means something! I would like all students in the profession to

know they have a voice and they can be heard. I am also applying for this position to

get an understanding of what it means to be a Medical Laboratory Scientist on a Na-

tional Level. I enjoy the thought of meeting new people and speaking with people

that have the same passion that I have.

1. In what professional, educational, or community service activities have you participated? Please indicate what, if

any, leadership positions you held in these activities.

I attended the National ASCLS Conference in 2009; I presented research work under the guidance of Dr. Patricia

Tille. I recently became the State of South Dakota Student Forum Representative and will serve on the Board of Direc-

tors for one year. I am currently a candidate for the president of the South Dakota State University Medical Laborato-

ry Science Club. The election is this fall.

2. If you were to become an ASCLS Student Forum officer, what would you like to accomplish on behalf of all MLS/

MLT students?

I would like to become an outstanding citizen within the national community of ASCLS. Becoming this will show stu-

dents that are non-traditional students that they too can become great. I would also like to show all students within

the profession that they too have a voice and can be heard. I would like to encourage all students to take an active roll

in the profession they have chosen as they are the newest members of the profession and their voice matters.

Candidate for Student Forum Vice-Chair I’m the current ASCLS-NY Student Representative, I have participated in my State

seminar and executive board meeting last year. I have taken many initiatives at the

state level during this academic year to improve student participation in the society

events. I recruit 20 CLS students from my program to the ASCLS membership two

weeks after I took the responsibility of student representative. I set up and

administer a Facebook page for ASCLS-NY: with the sponsorship of my state

society I posted weekly questions on the Facebook page and Facebook group that

has a total of 84 CLS students member across New York State. Students volunteer

to answer the question and at the end of the week we nominate the student who

had provided the first accurate response as the “ASCLS-NY STUDENT OF THE WEEK”, to whom I prepare a

certificate and an award package made of ASCLS-NY labeled items (notebook, pens…). During Medical Lab

week, the two students of the month received T-shirts purchased from the Advance Health with Lab profession

logo.

I also set up a 12 member panel who wrote the constitution of the Stony brook University CLS Club, organized

elections and put in place one of the first active CLS club in my state. I have transmitted the report of the CLS

club activity along with the constitution to the ASCLS-NY e-board at the last e-board meeting in June 13th before

the state annual seminar on June 14th. My goal is to have them review it and adopt it as a state society related

club that will be recommended to all University offering CLS program in New York.

In collaboration with the Public Outreach Committee of the Stony Brook University CLS club, I did a Presenta-

tion about CLS to Brentwood High School students. As a club, we organized two fundraiser events: one to sup-

port our program’s Kenyan orphanage project, and the second to restore the CLS Scholarship that is awarded to

best CLS senior research project. We have many other activities in plan for next year to promote the Medical

Technology profession. Kathleen Finnegan, the director of my CLS program who had been a New York ASCLS

resident and is currently on the Board of Directors is my inspiration and my motivator. My desire to promote

this profession has no limitation, if elected I will bring a positive contribution to the ASCLS, and as a leader of

tomorrow’s students because they need encouraging words to develop their leadership today.

1. In what professional, educational, or community service activities have you

participated? Please indicate what, if any, leadership positions you held in these

activities.

Engineering World Health (EWH) chapter Stony Brook: at EWH we fixed used and dis-

carded medical equipment and sent them to developing countries like Ghana, Latin

America and Pakistan, which cannot afford to buy these items from manufacturers. Our repaired medical devices and

instruments are tested for their functionality and efficacy at the headquarters of our organization located at Duke Uni-

versity. I had been elected as the Vice-President in April of 2012 and we gave a new direction to the organization and

worked closely with the dean of the School of Health Technology and Management at Stony Brook University to improve

and increase our productivity.

I was a president of the 12 member panel who wrote the CLS constitution, and currently the activities coordinator of the

CLS-club. I’m the current ASCLS-NY student representative as I mentioned above.

2. If you were to become an ASCLS Student Forum officer, what would you like to accomplish on behalf of all MLS/MLT

students?

First thing if elected is to address the part of the request for ASCLS Student Forum officer candidates that states “serve

as ASCLS Student Forum officer is a huge responsibility”. I don’t think that needs to be there. From setting up the 12

student member panel who wrote my school’s CLS-club constitution to organizing election I realized that students don’t

want to be told that serving as a leader is a huge responsibility, and in fact I don’t consider any responsibility to be

“huge” as long as one has motivation to serve. We have leadership talents, but being told that any responsibility is

“huge”, doesn’t give one enough confidence to pursue such responsibility. I believe a student forum officer’s responsibil-

ity is not any larger than that of the national society presidency, nor the U.S. government presidency, and as a leader of

tomorrow, students need encouraging words to develop their leadership today.

Second, I would recommend, that all ASCLS state chapters create an ASCLS-state affiliated CLS-club, and also have a

weekly question to Nominate ASCLS STUDENT OF THE WEEK in their states, like the one I put in place in my state.

Not only to encourage students in active discussion about their educational topics, but as a platform where I share easily

all information coming from the State society, ASCLS, ASCP and other university events like job fairs and important

announcements. I personally believe that a well-organized school CLS-club will improve students’ participation in State

and national ASCLS events, promote the profession, increase student interest in leadership, as well as increase the AS-

CLS membership.

If elected, I will represent clinical laboratory students and stand up for everything that promotes, protects, and improves

the Medical Technology profession while creating a prosperous future to students.

Candidate for Student Forum Secretary I am applying for the office of Student Forum Secretary to serve the students of

ASCLS and to stay active in the ASCLS national organization. I am organized and

keep up with communications so that all concerns, requests and problems are pre-

sented to the Student Forum Chair within the Student Forum. I look forward to

helping students learn about the professionalism that is needed in the field and to

help coordinate activities or other events with the Student Forum. I also look for-

ward to being a key member of the Student Forum officer team so that we can con-

tinue to accommodate our students in a diverse and changing field.

1. In what professional, educational, or community service activities have you participated? Please indicate what, if any,

leadership positions you held in these activities.

I participated in our local SLU Association of Medical Diagnostics Club this last year as Treasurer and helped to track our

budget. The club also did some fundraising activities for the club that included a bake sale and a Salsa Dance night for

members to participate in. I participated in attending an educational seminar during my clinicals to stay current with

subjects regarding to the CLS field. I also have attended the regional meetings for MoCLS in 2012 and 2013.

2. If you were to become an ASCLS Student Forum officer, what would you like to accomplish on behalf of all MLS/MLT

students?

I would like to have more student-centered events at the meetings and look into increasing participation for student

events. I think it would be fun to have extra-curricular events for students to meet more casually and to get to network

with each other. I would like to have some extra breakout sessions that students can help design so we can understand

their needs.

The purpose of the ASCLS Student Forum is to coordinate the involvement and interest in the Soci-

ety of students in the clinical laboratory sciences. We provide students with a VOICE in their pro-

fessional society, and educate them in the concepts of professionalism as expressed by ASCLS in its

philosophies, policies, and procedures. The E-newsletter is a bi-monthly publication, and the infor-

mation contained within is being provided as a means to keep student members engaged and in-

formed throughout the year, while also allowing for the open discussion of topics that affect them.

Candidate for Student Forum Secretary I believe that I would be an excellent candidate for the ASCLS Student Forum

Secretary for many reasons. I am currently the Secretary for the UIS CLS Club. This

position requires recording minutes at the meetings. I am a very organized person

and I keep very detailed notes regarding information discussed at the meetings. I was

also elected as the ASCLS-IL Student Forum President for the 2013-2014 year. I am

very excited to hold this position and to attend the ASCLS Annual Meeting as their

representative. If elected as the ASCLS Student Forum Secretary, I would ensure that

all data and information recorded at forum meetings and other events are organized,

detailed, and available to everyone. Other than organizational skills, I also have excellent computer skills; maintaining

the Student Forum Directory would be enjoyable for me.

1. In what professional, educational, or community service activities have you participated? Please indicate what, if

any, leadership positions you held in these activities.

I am currently the Secretary for the University of Illinois – Springfield CLS Club. We held our annual Poinsettia Sale

Fundraiser during the winter of 2012, which was very successful. The money raised went towards the funds required

for travel and lodging at the ASCLS-IL meeting in April of 2013.

At the state meeting, I was elected as the President of the ASCLS-IL Student Forum. Between myself and the other

UIS Student Forum leaders, we intend to increase activity among Illinois CLS students this year. We will be planning

and preparing the student events that will take place at the 2014 ASCLS-IL meeting. I am looking forward to the plan-

ning process and getting to know other CLS students in Illinois.

2. If you were to become an ASCLS Student Forum officer, what would you like to accomplish on behalf of all MLS/

MLT students?

As a Student Forum officer, I would have many goals that I would like to accomplish. I consider myself a very out-

going person with leadership potential; therefore, I would like to increase the activity among CLS students. Because

there are CLS students all around the country, I would like to implement an online community for students to ask

questions regarding classes, job search, or any other science-related topics. I believe this would be a beneficial tool for

CLS students to communicate about important topics.

Join Us for the 2013 ASCLS Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas!

Fellow students and recent graduates, come join us at the 2013 ASCLS Annual Meet-

ing in Houston, TX on July 30th – August 3rd for the networking opportunity of a

lifetime! The venues for this year’s Annual Meeting and Clinical Laboratory Expo

are the Royal Sonesta Hotel and the George R. Brown Convention Center. This year

marks the 81st meeting of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science col-

leagues and friends. As a student, first year professional, or new professional there

are many opportunities and avenues to explore and find your niche. Plus, the Clini-

cal Lab Expo will feature more than 800 exhibiting companies from across the U.S.

and worldwide. What a perfect opportunity to network with hundreds of employers

all in one location! The closest airport is the George Bush Intercontinental Airport

and they offer shuttle buses for $23 plus tip (one way) from SuperShuttle. The hotel

reservation block for the Royal Sonesta Hotel is filled, but there are many hotels

nearby. Many students chose to room with three other students to help keep the

costs down. If you need assistance in finding a roommate, please feel free to contact

me or the other Student Forum Officers! The average daily temperature in Houston

in July is approximately 94°F, but the meeting rooms tend to be well air-

conditioned. The attire is business casual and I highly suggest bringing comfortable

business shoes. If you were selected as a student or first year professional delegate

there are many sessions you must attend, but all students and first year profession-

als are welcome to attend any of these events to learn more about ASCLS as an or-

ganization and meet others in the same educational timeframe. Here are some sug-

gestions of the networking events you don’t want to miss out on:

Last year was my first time to the join the ASCLS Annual Meeting and Clinical Lab Expo and I can’t even begin

to tell you how much fun I had! I made so many friends ranging from students to Professional II members

that I have constantly stayed in contact with over the past year. A classmate and I fundraised to help offset the

cost of attendance and we are so thankful that we did! We spent the rest of the afternoon on Saturday to tour

the city and even make a visit to Hollywood. There are so many things to do in Houston including theaters,

museums, world-class dining, arts, culture, shopping, and exciting nightlife! Come join your fellow classmates

and future colleagues as we celebrate our profession in the clinical laboratory!

Graduated? Congrats on Becoming a First-Year Professional! Since I first became a student member of ASCLS, I have been on a rollercoaster ride of adventurous travel to state, regional,

and national meetings, have had numerous opportunities to network with fellow colleagues, and many chances to learn about

how our professional organization is run and how to make the most of it. You too can be actively involved in ASCLS and it’s

easier than you think! As your upcoming First-Year Professional Director for 2013-2014, I would love to tell you how!

As you know, face-to-face interactions are always the best way to network with possible employers, fellow new professionals,

and colleagues in all realms of clinical laboratory positions. Each constituent society holds an annual meeting in the fall or

spring in their state or in some circumstances a neighboring state. At these annual meetings, you will find several scientific

sessions that allow you to review many aspects of a particular subject or learn about new technologies and findings from com-

pleted research in these subjects. These scientific sessions also allow you to obtain P.A.C.E. credits towards your ASCP Certifi-

cation Maintenance Program. Because of this, many employers will allow you to attend as an educational paid leave. Many of

the constituent society annual meetings also contain clinical laboratory vendor exhibits where you can meet representatives

from multiple scientific companies that could become your future employer.

Constituent societies also hold board meetings several times a year where they discuss plans and upcoming activities in their

states and regions. Even if you live in one state and work in another, you may choose which constituent society to be involved

in based on where their meetings are frequently held. Although only constituent society board members are able to vote, most

meetings are open to any member who is interested in being more involved. In my opinion, this is the best way to show interest

in your state’s constituent society and grow as a professional in our national organization!

There are also Regional Meetings held every year, sometimes multiple times a year, depending on the region. There are ten

regions represented nationwide. If you are unsure of which region your state or constituent society falls within, you may look it

up at http://www.ascls.org/state-center. Many of these meetings are advertised on their regional webpage, Facebook account,

or on the ASCLS Community Calendar at http://ascls.mymemberfuse.com/event/list/. These meetings also include various

scientific sessions, networking opportunities with vendors, and often times a social activity to get to know your colleagues bet-

ter.

There are also three National Meetings held each year by ASCLS. The first is the National Annual Meeting and ASCLS/AACC

Clinical Laboratory Expo. This conference is five days in length and is held the last week of July and first couple days of Au-

gust. It contains over 50 scientific sessions in order to satisfy your continuing education credits, more than 800 exhibiting

companies to show the latest laboratory science technologies, and many opportunities to connect with colleagues and make

friendships nationwide. Each year, the Annual Meeting is held in a different city so this also increases your opportunity to trav-

el. The second meeting is the Legislative Symposium held over two days in late March in Washington, D.C. The first day of this

meeting includes an opportunity to learn about how our legislative offices work and about the governmental concerns we face

in clinical laboratories nationwide. The second day of the Legislative Symposium, each state’s society is given the opportunity

to put their skills to the test as they lobby for our profession with their respective senators and congressmen. The last meeting

is the Clinical Laboratory Educators’ Conference held in varying cities in February each year. This meeting allows faculty, ad-

ministrators, directors, advisors, and others to convene to discuss concerns and ideas related to clinical laboratory science edu-

cation. Each of these annual meetings offers an array of opportunities for all levels of professionals, but especially new profes-

In addition to multiple meetings, there are also ten standing committees within ASCLS to which students and new profession-

als can be appointed. These committees include: the Awards Committee, Bylaws Committee, Government Affairs Committee,

Leadership Development Committee, Membership Committee, P.A.C.E.® Committee, Patient Safety Committee, Product De-

velopment Committee, Political Action Committee (PAC), and Promotion of the Profession Committee. The charges and re-

sponsibilities of each of these committees can be found at http://www.ascls.org/ascls-leadership/committees. As a student or

new professional appointed to a committee, you are responsible for participating in monthly conference calls and any activities

related to completing the committee’s charges.

I have many exciting ideas for this upcoming year to successfully complete our first year as a New Professional. I am truly hon-

ored to serve as your FYP Director and I will strive to provide you with any resources you may need as we transition from a

student into a first-year professional and then into a new professional. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions
