Few Cents from

Today I am going to show you exactly how we went about decreasing the cost per install for a
shopping category app.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
Before this strategy was applied we were getting downloads for about $3.5 which is what
most app developers …
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
… usually see when they try Facebook Mobile App Install Ads for the first time and therefore lot of app
entrepreneurs actually back out !
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
If you are getting a download for such a high cost then there is no way you will ever be
profitable.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
So the most important thing is to try to decrease your cost per download.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
Stage 1 – Getting Social Proof - The first step in decreasing the cost per install was getting some
social proof for the App.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
So to fix this, the first step is to add a few reviews to the App. You can get these reviews from friends and
family to start off.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
Once you get these reviews, you do not want to stop there but actually need to get more reviews to help
people feel comfortable downloading your App.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
At the same time you want to make sure that you do not spend too much money on getting these reviews.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
So we needed to look for downloads which were more cost-effective and also relevant. But again, we do not
want fake downloads!
To do this we decided to go after downloads in India and Philippines. This strategy was very
effective for us.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
The reason for this is that, these are the two countries where you have a large English speaking
population…
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
… and you will get users who will leave reviews in English instead of their native language.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
This strategy was very effective for us and we were able to get a few more reviews for the app.
For downloads from India …
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
… our cost per install was about $1.60. We could have optimized this further but we were not
looking for a huge number …
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
… of downloads from India, so we decided to just stop after we got a few downloads and reviews.

Stage 2 – Going Narrow on Your Target Audience -Once we got the social proof we again started
running our …
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
… mobile install ads and immediately saw about 50% reduction in our app install costs. Instead of $3.5 were now able to get downloads for about
$1.73.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
This itself is a huge improvement, but we wanted to take this a bit further and improve the app install
costs even more.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
So, to further decrease the cost per install we decided to narrow down our targeting to a specific
state.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
This is actually a very common tactic used in Facebook marketing where you can narrow down
your targeting by state and …
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
… not waste money on the states which do not show a lot of interest in your App.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
We tested 8 major states for these ads . We found that our lowest cost per install was from
California.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
We were able to get downloads for about $1.22 which is a 29% improvement over what we were paying for
getting downloads from the whole country.
All this while, we were trying to get downloads from a very vaguely defined
target audience …
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
… but now we are going to use some really smart algorithms to identify the people who are most likely
to download the app.

1. Integrate Facebook SDK into your app – It is important that you do this after “Stage 1 -
Getting Social Proof".
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
2. Setup an App Custom Audience - Once you login to Facebook ad manager, go to audience manager
and click on custom audience.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
If you have integrated the Facebook SDK successfully, you should be able to setup an app
custom audience with just one click.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
3. Wait for 2 days while implementing “Stage 2 -Narrow down your audience” –
Facebook starts recording the ids of all the people who have downloaded …
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
… your app and are on Facebook. So you want to give Facebook about 2 days to record a good
number of relevant ids.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
4. Create a Lookalike audience – You will create a lookalike audience using the same audience manager
tool where you created the app custom audience.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
5. Use the Lookalike Audience - Change your app targeting to use your lookalike audience instead of
what ever targeting you were using previously.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
Just make sure that you do not remove the targeting related to the OS (android vs. iOS) and OS
version/Device which is specific to your app.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
A lookalike audience is basically a collection of all the people on Facebook who are expected to
behave exactly like your current app users.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
It is almost like saying that Facebook has identified millions of people who have the exact same preferences and interests as the people who
currently use your app.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
After we started targeting using the steps mentioned above, the cost per install came down by 55%. We
are now able to get downloads for about $0.55.
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
So let us just compare our before & after cost per installBefore: $3.5After: $0.55
The before cost per install was 636% more than the after cost per install.

I know you are probably wondering what all this cost us. Is this restricted to the big companies or can even smaller developers get downloads via this strategy?
Puneet Yamparala, App Entrepreneurs Association
As of writing this guide, we had spent close to $137.45 overall. Now all we need to do is scale this
up according to the budget.
