1 Remote Device Manager Introduction
1.1 Product Overview
This document describes using the NetComm Wireless Remote Device Manager (RDM). This product enables the
administrator to manage, monitor, and diagnose customer premises equipment (CPE) complying with the TR-069 and
LwM2M protocols.
The NetComm RDM enables the carrier to remotely manage devices.
Once the device is registered, the provisioning system automatically configures the device and enables remote access.
The RDM system is capable of:
Zero Touch provisioning
Activating/Deactivating
Diagnosing and configuring CPEs
Managing and updating firmware
Uploading files from the CPE
Performing DSL diagnostics
Verifying the CPE’s connectivity status
Resetting/Rebooting the CPE
Displaying the CPE’s activity log
Monitoring CPEs
1.2 NetComm Wireless Remote Device Manager
The NetComm Wireless Remote Device Manager application is accessed through a web browser. Currently, Internet Explorer,
Edge and Chrome are supported. The web interface consists of eight sections:
CPE Profile – a default provisioning profile for a specific CPE type (optional)
Update a CPE – to manage a specific CPE
Update Group – to manage groups of CPEs
Monitoring – to track and monitor CPE and system activity
Reports – to create, print, and distribute reports of CPE and system activity

2 Prerequisite – Enable Remote Management on CPEs
The NetComm Wireless Wireless Remote Device Manager can manage, monitor, and diagnose customer premises equipment
(CPE) that supports either the TR-069 or LwM2M communication protocols.
Due to security considerations, often these remote communication protocols are disabled when a CPE is shipped from its
factory.
As a prerequisite to the RDM being able to communicate with the CPE, the TR-069 or LwM2M communication protocol has to
be enabled and related settings made.
Each device has its own configuration and set up steps. Refer to your NetComm Wireless device’s User Guide for information
on enabling TR-069. A separate document explaining how to enable LwM2M on NetComm Wireless devices is available from
NetComm Wireless Customer support.

5 CPE Profile
5.1 CPE Profiles Overview
A CPE profile for a specific manufacturer and model serves the following purposes:
Configures the CPE with provisioning data and/or a new version of firmware
Automates firmware management on the CPE
Enforces the carrier’s policy on the CPE (access permissions, periodic inform interval, polling policy).
The CPE receives the profile:
Upon initial connection of the CPE to the RDM the device profile is established and the pre-provisioning task is
executed (first time provisioning).
After each subsequent connection of the CPE to the RDM (periodic inform) the CPE profile on the RDM is updated
with the latest active device data.
As a result, this profile sets all CPEs to the requested settings and/or firmware version.
A default profile is a generic profile that is automatically applied to a CPE that does not have a CPE profile associated with it.
A default profile includes only basic settings.
Normally, the administrator creates a default profile in the lab ACS, configures the parameter settings, and then exports and
activates the profile in the live ACS. The parameter settings of an active default profile are automatically applied to CPEs that
do not have their own CPE profiles.
Click the CPE Profile tab to display the CPE Profile page. The CPE Profile menu has the following options:

Export – Click the Export link to save the selected CPE profile in the .xml format. It can later be imported for used by
other CPE Profiles.
Edit – Click any field in a Profile’s row and that profile’s details will be displayed in the editing screen, seen Edit a
Profile, see next.
5.3 Edit Existing Profile
To edit a profile:
1 Click any field in the row of the selected entry in the table. The profile’s Active tab with its Parameters table is
displayed:
Figure 5 – Edit a Profile’s parameters
16 of 88 User Guide © NetComm Wireless 2018 v.1.0
Note – Only a CPE profile for which a template exists can be edited.
To create a template for the CPE, go to Update a CPE > Device Info > Create Template.
2 Select whether or not to send a request for the full data tree from existing CPEs.
Request full data tree from existing CPEs will retrieve full data tree details from all CPEs in the group. This can
require significant bandwidth, especially with TR069.
On the other hand Don’t request to send data tree from existing CPEs will only retrieve full data tree details from
new CPEs in the group. For example if 250 new CPEs were added to an existing group of 3,000 CPEs, this setting could
result in significance savings in bandwidth usage.
3 Select whether or not to re-provision existing CPEs.
Similar to the data tree request in the previous step, when new CPEs have been added to a group Apply provision
data for existing CPEs only will only provision (i.e. install/run new setup/config/update files) data for CPEs that are
already deployed. It is assumed that the new CPEs will have the provision data installed prior to distribution.
Select Don’t apply provision data for existing CPEs only if all CPEs, regardless of whether they are existing or new,
will require the provision data to be applied. This choice may require substantially more bandwidth as all CPEs will be
provisioned.
4 To include a condition, select an existing Condition from the list or click New condition to create a condition (follow
the procedure in Create New Condition, below).
5 To modify the selected condition, click Edit condition (follow the procedure in Edit Existing Condition, below).
