EQUIPMENTWHISTLE The whistle is an essential piece of equipment. Umpires should preferably use hand-held whistles. It allows you to signal and call infringements or advantage. The whistle can be in either the left or right hand. The Umpire must not move the whistle from hand to hand during the match.

FOOTWEAR Any comfortable sports style shoes are suitable. An Umpire has to change direction frequently, therefore the grip on the shoes should also be adequate. White shoes with or without trimmings, are recommended at a higher level of umpiring.

CLOTHING Umpires always wear appropriate white or cream clothing when umpiring. An Umpire shows that she cares by dressing neatly. This creates a favourable impression with the players.

COURT EQUIPMENT

SCORING The Umpire never does her own scoring whilst umpiring. Scoring should be done on score cards and, at top level, official score sheets should be used.

SCORINGScore Card

At the start of a gameThe team that has the first Centre Pass is on EVENS, as zero is an even score. The opposing team is on ODDS.Write E beside the team on EVENS.Always use numbers 1 2 3 4 etc.

• This allows for a quick calculation of which team has the next Centre Pass.

Throughout the first half of the game

• Adding up both teams' scores will indicate who has the next Centre Pass.

At Half TimeThe evens/odds stay the same if a Centre Pass was about to be taken when quarter/half time was called.

Centre Pass after the break = Blue (11+7=18 Even)

If the ball is in play at the end of a quarter, change the EVENS and the ODDS over.Do this immediately when the half ends so that there is no confusion at the start of play.

Centre Pass after break = Red (11+7=18 Even)

At the end of the gameWrite down the final score – both Umpires must sign the score card.

Example 1BLUE (E) RED1 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 6 1 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 61 2 3 4 5 67 8 97 8 97 8 9

warning • When warning a player - DON’T blow your whistle, NO time held. Do it at the time of the next penalty of that player. (Speak in a friendly manner). • If the player is not close enough to quickly inform her of the warning - you can ask for TIME to do that. • Inform the Co-Umpire at the interval that you’ve warned the player. • The Co-Umpiremay use your warning as her first warning for that player, or might choose not to.

SuspensionOnly after an appropriate warning is given!

• Signal to the Timekeeper to HOLD TIME, blow whistle. • Advise the player of the reasons for the Suspension and the applicable time OUT!

• The player is sent to a designated bench – next to the Technical Table. • Communicate to your Co-Umpire and the Timekeepers the time involved in the Suspension. • Signal to the Time- keeper and blow the whistle for the game to start.

The Position of the suspended player MUST be left vacant.

Ordering OffSame procedure as for suspension:

• The playing position of that player will be left vacant for the duration of the match, except if the player is a Centre. Another On Court player must be moved to Centre so as to allow the game to continue. • The player Ordered Off must go back to her own Team Bench.

• Whistle for 30 seconds. • Whistle for 10 seconds. • Umpire walks across the court and both Umpires position themselves on their respective Sidelines. • One minute warning. • Umpires then award the game to the non-offending team after one minute has expired.
