Nelson Primary School

Welcome to Nelson Primary SchoolAt Nelson we pride ourselves on being a warm and friendly school. We welcome a broad intake of children from Whitton and the surrounding areas and are proud to have a happy, diverse mix of cultures. We aim to ensure that everyone who walks into our school community feels welcome and is able to participate in the exciting learning that takes place.

Nelson has a supportive ethos and children who are enthusiastic to learn. We value everyone and work hard to give all children the opportunities to achieve their full potential, alongside developing the knowledge and skills needed to support them in their everyday life. We focus on both academic progress and the development of the core values needed to be a successful and valuable member of our society.

Our school is on a spacious site. Our exceptionally large playing field is a tremendous asset providing the children with a pleasant, green and open environment in which to learn and play.

We place great value on working together with parents. We know this makes a great difference to the quality of the children’s education and we welcome the informal links we have with them.

The staff and I look forward to meeting you and your child and ensuring that the first experiences of school are both happy and successful.

Mission Statement“Nurturing one another, discovering together, inspiring all”

CurriculumAt Nelson, we enable all the children in our care to attain the attitudes, skills and knowledge that lead to high levels of achievement in all areas of the curriculum and equip them to be life-long learners, ready to take their place as active members of society.

Our teaching follows the Curriculum guidelines, adapted to the particular needs of our children. Due to careful planning, there is a clear progression in learning as pupils move through the school. This is undertaken by year group teams, drawing upon each other’s strengths, and is subject to regular revision as we strive to provide the best learning opportunities for all children. We offer a rich and inclusive learning environment where pupil engagement is high and creative teaching approaches contribute towards children’s enjoyment.

We firmly believe that every child matters within our school. Therefore, established systems of monitoring and tracking pupil progress and well-being are in place. Both formative and summative assessment procedures allow us to identify how best to meet the needs of individuals. A range of support strategies is employed, utilising staff and agencies from within the school and beyond.

Heritage & CommunityNelson Infant School was opened in 1910 and built to take the overflow of children from the Church School in the groundsof Kneller Hall, housed in a large hut in Nelson Road. New buildings were completed in 1928, and there have beenseveral additions since then.

Our exceptionally large playing field is a tremendous asset providing the children with a pleasant, green and open environment in which to learn and play.

We offer a Breakfast Club for our children from Reception to Year 6 from 7.35am to school start time each day. It provides safe and creative play and care for children before the school day begins. It is open on all school days and is located in the school gym.

We also offer a range of activity clubs for most year groups across lunchtimes and after school.
