Putting Some Necron Terrain on the Drafting Table

With the new figures, I figured it was time to tackle some Necron terrain. I plan to combine some Hirst

Arts Egyptian blocks with some custom blocks with Necron Glyphs.

I figured I'd start o f with something small and simple. Here's a draft of my first plan. If this works out,

I'll go bigger, maybe some big pylons like Egypt's Temple of Horus.

It's been cold here of late so working in my garage when a warm day comes around makes progress

pretty slow, but I've finally got my mold making complete and casting done for the first test piece:

I like the runes and the decorations on the edges, however i find the way the buildings are built kind

of "off"... Maybe it's because all the codex art shows flat surfaces on the terrain. It just looks kind of

human-ish and vulnerable for a necron...

Re: Putting Some Necron Terrain on the Drafting Table

While it doesn't match some of the codex art (like the pylon like structures on pages 72/73), I'm not

that concerned. The codex art isn't that internally consistant with itself.

I drew insperiation from the old codex cover reprinted in a wider vew on page 28 of the new codex. It

shows a dust shrouded city in the background. I liked the sloped sides of the tower mold as they are

reminiscant of the lines on the monolith.

Inspiration aside, I don't like the flat faceted building technique for two reasons:

    1. It's hard to make them reproducable, which means one off structures made with mdf or foam core.

With the blocks I can cast and build whatever I need like legos.

    2. Large flat surfaces are hard to paint if you haven't mastered edging and extreme highlighting

(Which I'm not terribly good at). I tried to create just that look from terrain modeled after the

buildings in the Dawn of War Dark Crusade PC game. Without a good paint job they just looked flat

and uninteresting. All the nooks and crannies in the blocks make washes and drybrushing a workable

    technique.

That looks incredible for something homemade, nice work.

Re: Putting Some Necron Terrain on the Drafting Table

Progress has been stymied by the fact I can't settle on a paint scheme, but I've gone full scale on

building up a small Necron temple. As always, comments are welcome. More details at my blog:

I think you have done a great job. I can see the point of it looking too "humanish" but I think these

are great pieces and would love to see them on the table for a game.
